Where's the steepest hill in london?
-
• #204
Depends on ow you define London.
Some say that Swain's is 20% but I don't believe it. Canonbie is signed at 18% on the South side, which is the steepest I know of, inside Zone 3 area.

There is no fucking way Swain's Lane hits 20% at any point. The people mashton refers to are hyperbolic morons.

I rode Swains Lane for the first time on the night of the Urban Hill Climb. I was underwhelmed.

It's quite tough to race up it fixed (mixed gradient), but there are better climbing workouts nearby.

Vanbrugh Hill is the steepest one I ride (although the steep bit is very short) and if I am reading the sign from Google Maps properly, that claims to be 13%.
Blackheath is handy though - there's about 12 ways up onto the heath, so if you want a rapid series of climbs, for hill practice or for the LFGSS hill climb challenge, you've got Westcombe Hill, Vanbrugh Hill, Maze Hill, The Rise, Crooms Hill, Hyde Vale, Point Hill, Blackheath Hill, Morden Hill and Lewisham Hill, one right after the next. I've worked out a nice up and down series of loops for hill practice, but I'm yet to be in the mood to try out the full course. Should be good though, because although none of them are all that long, you'd get a few hundred yards to catch your breath, then down the next one, few hundred yards, back up again. Rinse and repeat.

What's your preference?

utfs / turbo > Swains Lane

that's what I was going to say. It's a proper slope. Heading south on sydenham hill is not as steep, but longer.

^^Crikey! It just didn't click that your favourite North London hill would be something for which I could easily search. Terribly sorry, 'twas an honest mistake.
As it is your preference is for sitting on an exercise bike in your fucking bedroom, so I wouldn't having been searching for the right topic, anyway.

Shooters Hill is good for training, only 10 mins from Blackheath and can be attacked from a few angles.

There is one near the horinaman mueseum (forest hill catford) that is 18 to 20 and its short and I can't do it just too much geared or fixed. But have done swains lane geared and it wasn't imposible.
Gimme a week and maybe a short south london hills ride, residential streets (so possible idiots tt?) need to plan the route and the ending pub.
By idiots TT you are allowed to do bits walking as some will be through a park.

Swains is 17% at the steepest point. Maybe 20% if you go over a speed bump.

Right, PM details of hilly roads that you would like to see on a souths hill tour.
What is the ideal TT distance or time? CIrca 5 minutes so about 8 for my fitness level.
Roads on this post have been noted and any others? Looking at a about a 2.5-3 hour evening ride. With some sight seeing

Knights Hill is a bit of a killer. It runs from Norwood bus garage up to crown point. Its long and has a gradient change.

I only said utfs because I can't remember, but I was definitely banging on about hills on here back in '07 :p

Just go out past Bromley and go arounda few lane round Brastead, Titsey e.t.c then come back making sure you take in Shooters hill.
Alternatively find the Pilgrims way on a map and ride the roads that cross it as many time as possible.
This is quite a hill also, Tithepit Shaw Lane in Whyteleafe :
