Not true@Dammit. The yellow hatching means no stopping unless turning right. Also buses are allowed to block them up I believe.

I can see what you mean, Neil, but to elaborate on what Andy said, obviously yellow cross-hatching applies at all times (with the exception that Ben mentions) and not just when the lights are at red. Whether they were to be painted behind or in front of a stop line, it would also mean that as queues started to move, people in the queue would have to wait ahead of that area if they couldn't exit on the other side, which would happen often.
Also, your proposal would mean that ASL boxes wouldn't be available as waiting areas at the head of a queue of traffic any more, as the point of yellow cross-hatching is to discourage staying in them at all times.
I've often said that I don't think ASLs make a lot of sense, and certainly not in the way in which they are currently legally configured. This is largely (I think) because of the confusion that arises about having two stop lines. If a different kind of line could be introduced that cyclists could cross but motorists couldn't (also eliminating the problems with the lead-in lane--nearside, narrow, advisory, or not there at all), this might work better, but that's not likely to happen.
I could go on, as it's a pretty knotty problem.

Change it? Most drivers have no idea what it is anyway.
I shouldn't of mentioned the Highway code.
I was thinking more like this :
"*The yellow hatched areas are understood in terms of contravention- stop in one and you are guilty, simple as that.Very easy for a camera to dole out loads of fines very quickly, and therefore for people to get the message*.

The best thing that this thread has given me is the new line, to be used at any motorist who gives verbals ( thanks m.f): 'Join the queue'. You can imagine it dawning on a driver as you next pass them filtering whilst they wait.

Was not aware about the turning right thing, and had assumed that bus drivers were simply "ignored" by the authorities, not exempt.

'sequestres'?
Spanish rider?
Sorry, 'sequesters'. I was not being serious though.

I gathered recently that buses are somehow not subject to them...
I was really just illustrating that, like asls, yellow hatching isn't actually that simple. :)

Also useful info (turning right) for us sometime car drivers, too.

I think the point is that the yellow hatched areas are understood in terms of contravention- stop in one and you are guilty, simple as that.
Simpler than a white line/green box.

Huh? Well, it's not illegal to stop if you're turning right... Not well known or simple.
With ASLs, it's expected that people won't cross the first stop line if the lights are changing, but if they cross that line they are allowed to stop in the ASL if the lights then change.
Both confusing, to my tiny mind. You'll have to forgive me, I sometimes drive a car. Means I'm using less of the earths precious food miles which is really the main reason for it.

Oh, I thought you were joking ...
Isn't the actual definition of the cross hatched box, your exit must be clear to enter (not the same as you must not stop) so if turning right, your exit could be clear, but you've still got to wait for the contraflow to let you through. I thought buses were subject to the same rule (I have seen some buses follow it) but I thought they just ignored it or had some argument that saved them from it!

WTFF?
I just thought it was bus driver mentality, always going bumper to bumper without thought. It's preposterous to allow them to block the junction*. There's one at Amen corner which they clog up and it causes no end of unnecessary grief.
When will bus drivers understand they are going nowhere anyway, always about to stop so driving like a tit will make no difference?
What needs to happen is to abolish bus lanes and cycle lanes, and for everyone to understand how to use a road properly and get on with it.

Just a thought that occurred to me today- the ASL is widely ignored and pretty much never enforced.
The legislation seems to be a little confused, so the coppers pretend it does not exist.
In order to make use of existing legislation that is widely understood why not just paint the ASL area with the yellow cross hatching of a "do not enter unless you can exit" box?
Those are 3 points and £60 if you are in them, no excuse, done and dusted.
Because you'd be committing an offence by stopping in it on a bike.

You read the highway code then?

Anyone else keep nearly getting killed in Southall? Fuck! Must be the worst drivers in London by a long-shot. Had a woman turn left with no indicator at all at about 20mph the other night, nearly put my head through her passanger window. Even the guys on the street were shaking their heads.

I think you guys don't fully understand what a yellow box junction is.
You can't wait in a yellow box if your exit is blocked, so if you're waiting to turn right on a green light, you can wait in a yellow box as long as where you want to go is clear, you're just waiting for a gap in traffic.
My car is bust at the moment- so I am tempted to say fuck'em.
However to answer your question properly- the only thing that is going to change drivers behaviour (not attitude, I agree) is fining them, over and over again if needed.
If cyclists got a fine every time they jumped a red I would imagine they'd stop doing it.
