  • When I arrived last night and was locking up my bike I saw a youth on the other side of the fence which worried me. He then looked at me and I realised that his furtiveness was caused by the fact that he was about to have a pee. He swiftly and politely apologised and walked off. I deliberately locked it where there was no access from the other side of the fence. I have to say that I was a bit nervous when returning to my bike and I was then told what had happened to the two of you. I doubt that it was the kid that I saw. A horrid end to a really enjoyable evening.

  • when i first moved to london my flatmate told me all bikes and motorbikes get stolen eventually. once there was a team in a white van which just cut bikes away from railings chucked them in the van and dealt with the locks later.

london has great diversity but part of that is the council estate next to nice areas. there isnt really anywhere that is safe, especially not a dark back street with no one watching a load of expensive bikes. i left my bike at work and as it's near the horseshoe and only recently bought a lock for short lock ups as my bike is such a thief magnet. looking into pitlock and other solutions as first night back from o/s i have my thompson post and bmw seat stolen from outside the george in the minutes between last drinks when the close the curtains and me finishing my drink and walking outside.

shit i even had a whole bike stolen from my shared hallway as my neighbour must not have shit the door properly.

it is an unfortunate fact of living in a big city.

i reckon pitlocks, glue/wax/ etc in allen key holes, more visability etc is the way forward. what rollapaluza did at kingspin was a great idea.

that sucks about your saddle stelle.

  • "It also comes with the connecting pipe that fits on the bike bicycle "

    that would be the seatpost...

look at the sellers other items though, looks like old antiquey/dead estate type stuff, unless a young thief is taking advantage of thier grans online antique/curio business...

At least the seller has attention to detail.

  • Well, that person does have a high feedback rating and has sold alot of Vintage stuff,
maybe that's just the area they've decided to trade in.

  • That seller is based in Pembrokeshire

  • I'd very much like to catch me a bike thief! Surely the cops should be setting up a sting op with some nice bikes & shiny bits to catch some thieving git's?

  • If that Brooks was stolen, it was nicked in about 1954

The rest of the seller's stuff is all vintage, I think Koens is right.

  • So any time that anything gets stolen we just shrug our shoulders and go 'pffft'? No. We have a right to be angry when our personal property is violated, as much as if someone were to attack us or break into our house. I won't just accept this because "it's London". Don't think my bike would be any safer if it was a rusty old mountainbike.

    x
don't leave your bike outside a shitty pub on a shitty estate. easy.

  • I work around the corner from there - it's hardly the den of iniquity people are making it out to be. And it's quite a busy area, by Clerkenwell standards, even if most punters are at the pubs on the square rather than at the Horseshoe.

There are people trawling around with allen keys looking for saddles to steal. I tried to chase a guy off from stealing someone's Brooks opposite the Soho Curzon once - he was hiding what he was doing with a big golf umbrella. Unfortunately he came back while I was in the cinema. He had a bag of tools and stolen bits, as I recall.

There's no reason why such people couldn't just lurk on the site looking for details of events - it'd be the smart thing to do, even, were you a thief.

Old chain in an inner tube round the saddle has worked for me so far, btw.

  • ideally we should try and find more bike friendly pubs
pubs with gardens / walled in areas to store bikes
i very rarely leave my bike alone and am either standing next to it or watching it if i do
however the last two nights i have locked up my bikes outside pubs and chose a seat right next to the window so i could watch it religiously

we need to start supporting pubs that can cater for bikes and ditching the ones with bad reputations and regular thefts
i know that might be a wrench for those of you with well established favoured haunts but there comes a time to draw the line

@ gormley although i am a bit of a pacifist it would be sooo sweet to catch one of these toerags and find a treasure trove of all the bits and bikes that have been posted up here as stolen over the last three years

and maybe clip them round the ear for good measure to boot !

  • Totally agree Dicki... I'd like to see a thread or a map or something. Always enjoy a beer more if I can see my bike or am confident its safe.

  • Yeah lets vote with our feet/armadillos.

  • Apaprently there is a thread... I think this deserves a bump.

  • when i was tying up there were two kids and a older person hanging about and they did have an allen key.

but i did not give a second thought cos they looked as though they were fixing their own bike. and they did not look like trouble. but what does trouble look like ?

    i would probably recognise them.

i feel for you, stelle, cos your seat was important to you. mine was a fiver from dogsballs. but i am worried about finding a replacement seatpost.

thanks for all the kinds words of help and all.

    skully is right.

you see my bike was out of sight of the pub so they could work on it with less risk. (there was nowhere else to tie up).

and yeah our events need to have adequate bike storage close to and in sight of the venue.

and yeah more of us hanging around outside.

i dont usually get done cos i am ultra cautious but i let my guard down and got found out this time.

  • stelle - feel for you

today had my brooks swallow stolen in broad daylight on busy Upper st Islington. Had been meaning to get some small ball bearings for the super-glue trick on the seatpost clamp for a while (had one glued on saddle clamp)

absolutely LIVID. but fortunately for me it didn't hold the same sentimental value as yours did

i used to say the only thing i hated was haters, now i think it is thieves also

down brick lane in the morning! and perusing the scumtree

  • That thief is a

    Sorry ladies.

These are super useful products, though not for saddles/seatposts.

what, even if you're like, on holiday or something? or visiting your in-laws in the country?

  • Stealing a brooks is stupid, because it's broken in it's never gonna be comfortable to the next person riding it...
