the paul component, royal flush ones win it for me

Hippy - how come you get away with just posting pics of all YOUR chainsets...?
I'ts not all about you.
Just you wait...I just do it to prompt comments like this from you.. so that I can then write stuff like this.. and then say that track cycling is on NOW on British Eurosport. Here ends my
selfpublic service announcement. -

Backwards step, no? From Campag gorgeousness to FSA utility. ;-)
You'd know by looking at my face that I don't "do" good looking.

the fact you cant chain the chainring kills it for me

Just saw the picture of the De Rosa Cranks and immediately wanted them.
They're very pretty.
I've done some browsing and found variations in crank armlength.
What do you base your decision on? I really don't know.
-
• #107
...your leg length.
There are some online calculators out there which you can try. 170mm is a good standard though.
-
• #108
Many Thanks...
Bit of an inexact science I gather from just looking.
I tried the '18.5% of the length of the top of your femur to the floor in your bare feet' method and came out with a crank length of 178mm.
I think i'll try 175mm
Cheers for the info

It should also depend on what riding style you use rather than leg length. Shorter crank, lower gear, higher rpm gives same speed as longer crank, higher gear, lower rpm.

The build is for a short commute and tooling around town.
Thanks for pointing me in the right direction with gearing. The gearing threads here are informative but I have many many questions and need to inform myself before plunging back in.
cheers

This one catches my eye.

Since this seems to be the "post pictures of your own chainset"-thread then i'll post these:
That last one is the cheap'n'sucky Sugino RD2, but even though they are ugly, and even though I have to run the chainring on the inside to get the chainline okay, they have actually held up to the daily beating for 7-8 months..

I think that is the thing. They maybe cheap'n'sucky but a lot for the expense seems to go on better finishing (presumably more expensive materials) rather than making the cranks stronger.
The RD2s will probably last for just as long as any other crank. Just don't look at the underside as the poor finishing will give you nightmares -

More expensive cranks tend to be lighter and MORE likely to fail not less.
The stock Langster cranks lasted murtle a year and then me a year so crank cost <> crank life expectancy. -

Hippy - once I sort out a data cable my chainset collection will own you - showoff cnut!
-
• #117
RD2's are cast, 75's are machined out of a single billet, as are most other decent/expensive cranks.

Haha.. you own a Campag crankset = Auto Fail. :P

No they're not, they're forged.

Hippy - I own 7.
carbon chainring + fatty rider = waste of money. -
• #121
NO!
So where do you see them failing then? Snapping in half, tapers going wrong?
In my experience cranks only get upset when doing silly things on them that involve flying through the air, not through road riding.
