  • Entered the rapha fun race. cuz its near

  • Hi there, I am the organiser of Ripley Castle Cyclocross, which takes place in North Yorkshire each New Year's Day. Our website is http://www.ripleycastlecx.org.uk
I'm toying with the idea of running a sscx race (I'm sorry it'll have to be incorporated within another race to start with). I feel sscx has a real potential to bring an extra dimension to the event.
What would the appetite be for this?
I really appreciate honest and constructive comments....ideally to my email address stevesmales@stevesmales.fsnet.co.uk

    Cheers
    Steve

  • Recently switched my 105 2x10 over to 1x10. Everything seems to be good so far, been hammering it up and down (over bumps, curbs and drops) to try and derail the chain and it won't budge.

I'll have to wait until the mud sets in to really see if i need a shadow XT mech.

Anyone got some stories about 105 mechs not handling 1x10 well?

  • the Herne Hill race on sunday - can you just turn up and register on the day?

edit: from the info on the website it seems I can, but I have to pay the £10 yearly membership to the cross league, plus the £18 for the race - is that right? Do I need a BCC license too?

  • £10 to join the league and £18 a race? That seems a bit steep. That £18 might include a day license.

Incidentally, if you join LFGSS CC, which is free, you can get a year's worth of BCC license at bronze level for free as well. That'll cover you for any local league CX races.

  • You don't have to join the league. The £18 should get you everything you need to race on Sunday.

  • Do I have to wear a helmet? What does this mean then:

All youth and senior riders must pay a £10 League registration fee at their first event.

  • Yes you have to wear a helmet.

My understanding is that everyone has to pay the tenner.

  • You are a helmet.

What is ^^^^^^% the chain sits proper on 1x ?

  • A joke right?

  • I use SRAM 1x so the thick thin chainring plus a clutch rear mech means the chain never comes off.

  • Not a joke, nope.

I'm using a N/W chainring up front, but a standard road mech out back (non-clutch) so the thinking is that this setup can lead to losing your chain when the terrain gets hairy.

Doesn't seem to be the case so far, but once you add mud into the equation I think i'll be cursing my tight fisted budget.

  • I'm using a 6600 rear mech just fine 1x10 but with a narrow-wide ring.

I'd expect problems if you're using the regular 39t inner from a 2x setup, unless of course you just leave the f mech in place.

  • I've got a raceface N/W in the front. Did you change the tension spring (not in the factory hole/slot) in the mech?

  • The B screw? I didn't. I don't think it does anything unless you're on the capacity limit of the mech. I had a play but I think you need 30t in a short mech for it to be useful (mine is a 12-28tt cassette).

  • So to clarify: set the b screw for max chain wrap unless you need to lift the jockey wheel from the largest sprockets.

  • I meant the spring inside the mech, it tensions the arm to the body. I think it's called the P-tension spring, Shimano mechs have two positions inside. The factory default is the slacker tension and there is another next to it to tighten it. I think it is there to reduce chain slap, which can lead to losing the chain.
In my paranoia, i've been trying to find as much information on it as possible. There isn't much!

edit: Will take a look at my b screw, see if i can improve that. Cheers

  • Have to wait until the mud sets in to really see if i need a shadow XT mech.

A shadow plus mech would help you...if it was compatible with 105 shifters

  • 9sp shadow mech is compatible with 10sp 105!

Did you not get the memo?

  • The nice lady at sign in at Hog Hill was letting people sign on without paying the league joining fee. Seems steep if you're only riding the odd round.

  • I'll bring £30 and brace myself for the worst then :)

  • 9sp shadow mech is compatible with 10sp 105!

It has no chain retention device in it, as far as I know. Only advantage would be greater tooth capacity.

Did you not get the memo?

    No memo was sent.

  • Ah I see, that one doesn't have the clutch mechanism? Am i right in thinking that MTB mechs have a higher spring tension anyway, so it will do a better job of stopping things bouncing around than a road mech?

  • Yep, tubeless, hydraulic disc brakes, fat incompetent buffoon sat on the saddle.

    See you Sunday.
