• I've finished sorting the photos from Sunday, you can see them here http://www.chrislanaway.com/clientimages/

Andy and Ramaye, PM me your address's and I will send out some photos to you. I'm getting prints done early next week.

Some nice photos Chris. I like to see pics that someone has taken a bit of time and effort with. I feckin' hate these wankers who turn up with their mum's Nikon and a lightbulb and call themselves professional because they've got a website and can't shoot a smoking dog turd on an icy dirt track and keep it in focus.

(sorry about that, just had a rant moment)

Keep up the good work. Have a look at some cyclocross stuff I shot last year in the South West: http://www.flickr.com/photos/68159528@N06/

ps. Don't give your pics away. It'll hurt you in the long run ;-)

• Thanks for the kind words, I appreciate it! I'm only giving Andy P and Rameye some prints as they volunteered their beautiful faces to help me out with a uni project.

@scottmac - I agree with you, I did not want to shoot like that in anyway shape or form. I wanted to try and portray what a cyclocross event is like rather than just photos of guys on bikes to sell prints for £10 a pop. It was great fun on the day, there was so much going on I found it hard to choose what to shoot. I just checked your flickr, added you as a contact :).

• Great photos! Sorry again I forgot to get in contact, met an old friend and forgot about it. I like how all your photos are so different, you must of been running all over the course!

• I've flickrd you too!

I've nothing against people selling pics (I used to do it) but I hate these gwc's who don't know shit and turn up at bike events, get a website, open up a paypal account and sell "professional photographs" I wouldn't floor the birdcage with.

Oh, yeah - watch the BCF. They nick your photos and stick them on their website and then act all innocent.

I've had too much coffee today. Gone for a lie down...

Thanks mate and no worries, maybe next time! I was haha, I figured out a little route and worked my way round when I got a few got shots from each spot.

I know exactly what your talking about, I've encountered a few of those at various events.

Sorry if I sound dense but who is BCF? I did a google search but couldn't find anything, I hate poachers. I don't mind people using them if I have granted permission but I am a photographer and I hope to build it into a career once I graduate, I have no quarms chasing funds for breach of copy right.

Cheers

• BCF = British Cycling Federation, former name for what is now known simply as British Cycling.

If you, or anyone else for that matter, does have issues with them then let me know and I'll speak to the right person about it.

• Chris, copyright is such a grey area. If you were to take a thieving git who nicks your pics to court, it still depends on the judge and you may get a doddery ol' fool who can't see what all the fuss is about!

Make your copyright clear on your website. I used to have this on my website:

All digital images purchased are the exclusive property of xxxxxxxx trading as www.xxxxxxxx.com and are protected under international copyright laws.

Purchase of this copyright image is for personal use only. 'Personal use' means non-commercial, domestic usage. Any digital image purchased from www.xxxxxxxx.com will not be used commercially, sold or hired, unless permission is granted by the owner.

The image may be used by the buyer, for non-commercial personal web pages and for his/her's local cycling club's website only. The buyer should understand that digital or printed images are not in the public domain for cycling club sponsors, associated companies or workplaces and cannot be used for publication by the aforementioned for self promotion or commercial gain.

Images purchased and used for personal use websites, must be no larger than 800pixels in width and 72dpi. If these parameters are exceeded it is violation of copyright.

Photographs are not to be downloaded, reproduced, copied, stored, manipulated, projected, used or altered in any way, alone or with any other material, or by use of computer or other electronic means without the express written permission of xxxxxxxx.

The use of any image as the basis for another photographic concept or illustration is a violation of copyright.

By purchasing a digital image or print you are agreeing to be bound by the terms of this agreement. Purchase of a digital or printed image is expressly on these conditions which embodies all of the understandings and obligations between the parties.

No images are within the public domain, unless permission is authorised by the owner.

It has been brought to my attention that photographs have been pinched from my site and have been used on other websites without my permission.

This is theft and I will be charging the following rates if I see anymore of this naughty naughtiness...

For each individual image: £60 for digital processing and travel expenses at 50p a mile.

600 x 800 pixels = £175 for one month online Advertorial and Newspapers.
600 x 800 pixels = £130 for one month Editorial.
600 x 800 pixels = £625 for one month online Commercial and Business.
600 x 800 pixels = For home/menu pages, simultaneous print and web use and/or online material, please add 50%

For images used as icons, charged as a quarter page, less 25%.

I don't care if the image is online for one minute, you will be charged for one month's usage. In addition, I will receive half of the money and the other half will be donated to the Help for Heroes* charity.

Please enjoy the site and if you want to use an image, all you have to do is email me and ask.

Thank You!

BC still ignored all of the above and put one of my images on their site and tried to fob me off with shit like, "it was taken from a press release" - Ha! I've never given any of my pics to the press! I was really pissed off, but I let it go as BC do a lot for Help for Heroes.*

Also, when I was doing it, BC introduced a form that had to be signed by the event organiser giving you permission to shoot the event etc. It was obviously written by someone who had watched too many episodes of Law and Order as it was a joke. I would arrive at events and was then given a grilling by the BC "official Photographer" as he liked to call himself about all the do's and dont's of shooting a race.

You will also encounter the PP (Paedo Police). These are utter no-marks who attach themselves to the event and think they are Petrocelli and you are a potential paedophile. Again they will give you the in's and outs of what you can and can't shoot at the event. Just tell them to fuck off, for as long as you have permission from the event organiser to shoot, then you should be fine.

Check this out: http://photorights.org/faq

I never once had any hassle from parents for shooting the kid's CX. It was always from the BC and their Scooby Dooless hangers on.

*Eventually I gave up because I had a demanding day job and I felt as welcome as a fart in a spacesuit. *

Also, I started racing again as it was a damn sight warmer thrashing about a muddy field for an hour than freezing my nuts off with my thumb stuck to the shutter!

• Thanks for that ^

• CX Worlds day 1 didn't go all that bad for the Dutch, Junior Van Der Poel and U23 Van Der Haar got gold. I didn't see the 1st race but the second was very exciting. Tomorrow there's hope for 1 more medal (either Marianne Vos or Daphny Van Den Brand) because it will be a Belgian or Czech rider to cross the finish 1st in the men's race...

Last round of the juniors race here

Last round of the very axciting U23 race here

(sorry, both in Flemish)

• Looked like a Belgian national race today.
Is Pauwels copying andyp style wearing red leg warmers? :)

• Child protection is a serious issue, and although I agree there are some over-zealous vigilante types out there I wouldn't recommend telling anyone to fuck-off at a bike race.

Being friendly and outgoing, introducing yourself to the organiser and chief comm often yields good will and greater access to the course, wearing a Hi-Viz vest also helps make spectators and riders aware of your presence and is seems to make you appear more "pro" to attendees.

Respecting the guidelines and rules of the governing body or local league is probably a good idea, especially at grass-roots level where everybody you deal with will be a volunteer.

Scottmac how do / did you deal with model releases and image / privacy rights of individual subjects at cross events, being that some are held on private property?

Here are some of my snaps that I took with my mum's Nikon and a lightbulb, if you like them please feel free to use them in anyway you choose, a credit would be nice.

• Amazing dominance, but slightly boring world's race...excepting when the German guy punched the Frenchie.

Yeah! Tell them to fuck off!

Anarchy, rebellion! Fuck the man!

You must be a very impressionable young man, have you considered a career in the Empire?

• Amazing dominance, but slightly boring world's race...excepting when the German guy punched the Frenchie.

The battle for silver in the women's race was good though. (fantastic result for Nikki Harris too)

• missed it, must try to remember that Dutch site that has all the race videos on it...think Cooky posted it here.

• I don't know that site, holler if you find it. Sporza has some vids of the worlds, with flemish commentary sorry

U 23 last round http://www.sporza.be/permalink/1.1206954 (now that was an exciting race)

Women's last round http://www.sporza.be/permalink/1.1207677 (good 2nd place battle)

Men last round (impressive Niels Albert but very boring) http://www.sporza.be/permalink/1.1207885

• missed it, must try to remember that Dutch site that has all the race videos on it...think Cooky posted it here.

I know www.cyclingtorrents.nl though, maybe that's it

• Just thawing out in Bruges after being at Koksjide today. Flipping freezing, 5 hours stood around in -1oC, never been so bone achingly cold in my life! Arrived in the morning in time to see the last few laps of the women's race, was really exciting, the crowd (70k) were going nuts for Sanne, and interesting exchanges of leads in the last mins kept the tension up. Men's race was a bit meh in comparison, difficult to get excited about the dwindling brit and US showing (trebon fan) and really hard to find a decent place to watch from, everywhere was 10 deep.

• Child protection is a serious issue, and although I agree there are some over-zealous vigilante types out there I wouldn't recommend telling anyone to fuck-off at a bike race.

I was always friendly and outgoing, emailing organisers before events, asking permission etc. but unfortunately, I came across a few too many idiots who were making an enjoyable experience a pain, so I told one bloke to fuck off because he was referring to me that I maybe a paedo - so he did fuck off (very quickly in fact). Unfortunately, the public have watched too much TV and label anyone with a camera public enemy no.1.

Good advice. I did all of the above. I've seen a few riders arguing with officials when they (the riders) were totally in the wrong. Not good.

Wot? Was I shooting Naomi Campbell or something? If someone didn't want their pic on my site, then I would have removed it. Nobody ever contacted me to remove any pics. I always contacted organisers and asked them if I could cover the event. If they had said no, then I obviously wouldn't have done so.

Organisers always want their event covered as it promotes interest. I would be surprised if anyone turns you away.

Re. Here are some of my snaps that I took with my mum's Nikon and a lightbulb.

Is this aimed at me? A bit immature if it was. I think you've taken some good pics. I was talking of the bellends who call themselves "professional".

• Yeah! Tell them to fuck off!

Anarchy, rebellion! Fuck the man!

You must be a very impressionable young man, have you considered a career in the Empire?

Yes, I have actually, but I was over qualified.

Thanks for calling me "young". Made my day!

Just curious really, I'm sure most people are happy to have their photo taken, not sure what the legal position is for taking images of people on private property without their consent though...so wondered how you dealt with it, if at all....and if they hadn't signed a disclaimer or similar with your site details on it, how would they know that their image is on your site in order to ask for it to be removed?

*Re. Here are some of my snaps that I took with my mum's Nikon and a lightbulb.

*I lied, it's a Kodak.

just watched it....great stuff.

If you've got permission from the race organiser, you're OK to shoot. On private land open to the public permission will allow you to photograph people without their individual consent, but note that privacy considerations will still apply.

I used to print off slips of paper and get the missus to put them on the cars windscreens in the car park and also pass them out to spectators and cyclists at the event.

The only time I used a model release form was when I was shooting models.

If I'm shooting pics of people at an event I am not selling the picture for advertising or marketing use. Hence, I didn't need a release form.

Nice Kodak.
