  • oh, i forgot to mention mike e is Hull based

  • in Hull

  • Anyone fancy buying one and saving on shipping?

i bought the hope minutes after texas pointed me to this
i won't get here on time for tues, will it?

    does everybody wear a helmet?

  • tika, some wear helmet some don't. treat it like you would any bike ride. it is not dangerous riding at night, if you can see where you are going. lights are everything.

did you wear a helmet on the Isle of Wight?

  • no. i don't even have one apart from my kid's one, the bike shop said that i could use as it is road safe it and it fits me...so in an emergency i would wear it. i have never ridden at night, apart from london and i am going to the dd so i might as well train, scary

  • tika, it's just riding a bike. you have done it for a while. you will do it a lot longer. and be happier for doing it with the moon for company. simple as.

  • nice!

  • and owls, and bats, and gina's cookies and , and , and......you don't need a helmet just ride easy with me and jonny

    Shipping is free.

BTW, I've not run it to exhaustion, but I think on 'high' you'd get about 2.5hrs (3hrs with some dimming); and on 'low' I suppose at least double that.

It's quite floody, but still has a defined spot. The 'low' setting is about the same as 'medium' on the Hope. I only use the 'high' on the Romisen for scary bits, and oncoming drivers don't like the floodiness of it, which isn't necessarily a good thing...

If you're only going to use one light, I'd recommend sticking it on the bars. Helmet only is not very good for picking out irregularities in the road surface.

Lastly, but not leastly, the Romisen was originally a single mode item, but has recently changed to high-low-strobe. The strobe is no good as a blinking LED equivalent, because there's a real risk of triggering epilepsy in yourself or other road users who are 'at risk'. It's meant to be a safety device to stun attackers. If you switch on the torch, then switch off, then on again (within a few seconds), it switches mode. If you leave it off for >30 seconds, it will always revert to the high mode.

Anyway, this forum's about riding not rambling, so I'll shut up.

BTW clintsmoker, I found myself riding up Swains Lane a few times last night... in a 95" gear. Fine, if you enjoy weight lifting :S

  • if0x, I was riding with mike e last Friday, as jonny says - top man. He was complaining about being the only fixed rider in Hull so sure would welcome the contact. He's also trying to put together a Hull based overnight ride in Aug/Sept that us soft southerners could get to - there's a thread on cyclechat somewhere.

Clint, here's one of those threads complaining about the cateye singleshot. There's been loads of problems with the mount and refunds/replacements given out without fuss. Apparently its being redesigned - still waiting for mine though so don't know if they've solved the problem.

  • balmain - mike e isn't the only fixed/ss in Hull - there's a woman with a burgundy Surly, an older guy riding a Pete Dunn, some bloke on a Pista with risers and... me at least. There's also a couple of fixed conversions I see hanging about the Uni. (I say fixed/ss because I can't be sure they're fixed...)

I'm not yet that strong a rider, and so wouldn't want to be a drag on people in a group ride just yet. Am aiming to build up my fitness, though, and an overnight ride definitely sounds... like a worthy challenge.

  • Cheers for that bmmf. I saw that shipping was free but automatically assumed (as there was a dorra sign attached to the price tag) that free shipping only applied to deliveries within the States. Good to know - cheers.

    Shipping is free.

i woudn't dare to go if you weren't taking it easy. Fixed? my de rosa is not in london yet

train 19:13 liverpool st station meet by ticket office

will be looking into getting a few more volunteers to ride with bmmf so the train is not too packed on the way out - watch this space

  • I'm probably going to ride out along the Epping Rd till the turning for the B182/181 or whatever it is; as this is the route I'd be likely to take home too. I'd be happy to meet up with anyone between Old St and the destination. It'll be a steady ride, but I'm not sure what time I'd aim to leave yet.

[st]What's the arrival time for the train at Roydon?[/st] 19h45 - I just checked the older posts. How fucking pro-active of me.

I know the Epping Rd is fast, but the traffic is more predictable than going via Sewardstone/Waltham Abbey/Crooked Mile.

  • I know the Epping Rd is fast, but the traffic is more predictable than going via Sewardstone/Waltham Abbey/Crooked Mile.

I did the latter the last time round and it was absolutely fine. Hardly any traffic and generally well-behaved.

  • @ clintsmoker, if the bracket looks like this:
    http://www.evanscycles.com/products/cateye/h34-flex-tight-front-light-bracket-ec008150

and the release clip is on the light, not the bracket, then I've got one you can have (on both mine it was the clip on the light that went, but the bracket is fine)

Also, on your plan to recruit people to ride out, what kind of distance does that mean in total? Ta

Outbound isn't so bad, and on a quiet day it's quite a nice road; but I've still encountered more blind bend/wrong side of the road morons along there than I have going straight through the forest.

    I'll sleep on it...

    Hola, Ved!

  • Who's going to be up for riding out to Roydon and back with me?

(no hurry - answers on a postcard)

I am pretty sure I can make it this Tues for another fine ride, if so BMMF I am up for rolling to Roydon with you from Old Street if you know the way, North of the river and I are not really on speaking terms...
