  • Might make it later. I can play Mat's position in 'breasts' if he don't show or can sub into another team. I'd like Cosmic Breasts to get some practice together so don't mind subbing or going to mitch...

  • Yes, but I read it as it was also about the level of ability within the opposing teams you play. That's what I had the reaction to:

allow one throw-in team? That way we can limit the practice to mostly full, existing teams (allowing one sub per team). If there is an overflow of people without a team, they will have to rotate in and out of the one throw-in team.

Expecting non-teams to rotate within one team to stop lots of ad-hoc (bad) teams competing is a bit rich is all.

Obviously I want the London teams to be the best they can be, it would be better to "draw a clearer line" in my opinion as I personally would rather go elsewhere than sit around feeling miffed is all.

  • @ Tom, Word.

  • Existing teams = league teams or tourney teams or a team of people aspiring to become a serious team for leagues or tournies.

" Are you really saying that people from established teams can't play in other teams?" I don't recall saying that.

We play polo five days per week. The idea is to reserve one day, on one court, for serious competitive games. We have chosen Downham on Tuesdays. There are two other courts in NE.

The new idea is to limit this team time to serious play. We'll allow one team of throw-in stragglers, but no more than one. If there are three or four singles, then no problem. If there get to be more, they should go to a different court or stay there and rotate during their term.

Again, this is just a suggestion.

The alternative would be that we exclude everyone who isn't in a team competing in the Euros.

We collectively saw this as a way of not excluding the rest of the London polo scene.

  • It's nice that the team practices are being organised out in the open (as it were) and on a set date.

If 2 teams worth of stragglers want to play on Tuesdays then head to Mitch, if not, then one team can rotate through as mentioned.

This seems like a fair, transparent, even generous compromise.

This is the point! If you have a team, then play on team night. If you don't, play in the single ad hoc team or go start another game at another court. We are trying to establish a serious team practice without being completely exclusionary.

  • I agree with most of your points... I'm saying it's not clear enough though, you'll have lots of "teams" before you know it and be back at the starting point. Draw a clearer line (list of teams, Euro teams, "pro" teams) and we'll head to Mitch.

I'm also against the "straggler" talk though, but you guys will be golden oldies before too long, hah.

If some people here could re-read my posts that'd be great. I'm not just donning a defensive hat. I'm as happy as larry.

  • I'm saying it's not clear enough though.

A rhyme always helps with making things clear and easy to learn:

"If you're feeling the need to bitch, head to Mitch".

    :)

  • "Pro-polo fakers are much agro makers?"

    :)

  • "Long in the tooth, strong in the hoof?"

    :)

  • Ha, this thread's funny. Stupid polotics. I agree it's better to do it this way, then just organize private games that can possibly leave bad blood.

So are there throw-ins at Mitch? I could be up for that (after I've done some other shit earlier in the evening). Not much interest in crashing team night though.

  • "We're on the heels of those with slow-wheels?"

    I'm spent.

  • "Jon, Jon, the leprechaun..."

  • "If you're feeling the need to bitch, head to Mitch".
    Fucking awesome.

  • Straggler is not derogatory. Webster defines it as: "Something that stands alone or by itself."

I.e., a polo player without a team at team night.

  • Existing teams = league teams or tourney teams or a team of people aspiring to become a serious team for leagues or tournies.

" Are you really saying that people from established teams can't play in other teams?" I don't recall saying that.

You are right, I was being pedantic and arguementative, team night is a good idea and it's good you're sorting it out.

    Sorry, was tired yesterday!

  • Straggler is also (more commonly?) used to describe someone who falls behind the rest, a vagabond in olden times or an unwanted addition (the outcast of an offspring, someone pulling everyone back, etc). But meh, it's not exactly derogatory, give it a year or two and the polo can do the talking.

    Big love.

Fair enough. I meant it the other way, but I see that it could have been easily taken this way.

  • Apparently he didn't get enough winter this year, so he went there for fun, by himself.

    stop talking about me please.

  • stop talking about me please.

    No.

  • so is max's night a team night or are there hellamegathrowins somewhere?

  • I do suggest a clearer lit the level of competition and upping your game, right? (Otherwise the comment above about having one giant throw-in team each night doesn't make sense.)

Actually, the idea behind team nights was not to have more compeitive play, but better team play. London already has very competitive play. We just aren't very good at team play (viz. ECMC tourney, Rouen tourney etc).

  • Oh, and Jono, if you're looking for a team, or need a third - I am currently unattached.

  • Why don't you arrange a mini tourney between those in the euros and include 2 spaces (or however many are needed to make the numbers) to those not in teams who want to roll..
all the rest can watch or head to the other court?
