  • Anyone ridden the H10/2 and got any advice/info about the course? Considering riding the Reading CC 10 there on Tuesday

    Only about a hundred times.

Sign on will be at the point where the off road cycle path crosses Westacott Way

It can get pretty dark under the trees in the middle section

Don't go mad up the slope to Burchetts Green in the first mile, it's tempting to try to hold speed up there as you'll feel fresh and going easy will feel slow

The Floral Mile on the way out doesn't look like a downhill, but it definitely feels like an uphill coming back

Look out for a series of manhole covers right on the racing line between the end of the Floral Mile and the Seven Stars on the way back

Your finish wind up starts at the bottom of the dip by the Shire Horse

If you see my T3 there, come and say hello

  • ^^ You'll be about 20mi from where live. I'm up in Brum that weekend though so I can't watch

In Wales? Whereabouts? Is your fridge stocked? ;)

  • Cwmcarn, fridge is stocked atm

  • Don't touch anything, I'll be right there..

  • I might dip my toe in the water of time trialling and do the Bexley evening 10 on Wednesday. Is anyone else heading out? Anything I need to register on the day other than my race license?

You don't even need your licence. I might join you.

I guess I'll try to be there too then.

  • What time will you be leaving Tom, I would like to go this week?

    Thanks

Looking at their calendar, it's listed as an old school event. Will I still be able to ride with aerobars?

  • Dammit, seen this? SRM, Powertap, Quarq calibration calcs:

    http://www.cyclingpowermodels.com/PowerMeterCalibration.aspx

  • I think that's functionally identical to the spreadsheet I sent you this morning- advantage of the spreadsheet being that you can see at a glance if your calibration is moving.

I just weighed a 10kg pot of ready-mix plaster and used that, as long as you can weigh whatever it is accurately enough (+/-10g with my scales) that's fine for this purpose.

The plaster had a handle that I used to hang the pot on the pedal spindle, then just rotated the rear wheel to lift the pedal up, recorded the maximum offset, boom- done.

  • I'm still undecided about which way to move. I like the new G3 hubs except they don't work with the old head units apparently? I would prefer to stick with PT. SRMs just seem like too much work.

My commuter PT showed signs of life this morning so perhaps it's just a flat battery. I may have time to save it. We'll see.

The 404s worked yesterday even though there was a cloud in the sky.. oh that's because they haven't been serviced by Paligap..

  • What time will you be leaving Tom, I would like to go this week?

probably about depart Nunhead at 5. Gentle ride out for an hour.
There will be lots of waiting around at the other end, but at least I'll get a spot. Last few times I went I've been in the final handful of riders allowed to sign on or turned away.

  • I'm in for this weeks Bexley. Just stuck it in the work calender i'm leaving early at 4pm.

Will be heading home and driving there, worked out well last time.

  • Ah, that's going to be a challenge for me to make.

I finish work at half five in Farringdon= I will never make it there on time.

I've used a Powertap before, and to be honest it was identical in terms of fuss to the SRM- i.e. there was none, really.

I suppose if you get a wired SRM you have to attach the wire to the downtube, and of course fit the cranks, but after that all you have to do is charge the headunit.

But then you can sling whatever wheel in the bike, and always have power- that's as significant advantage, as it makes wheels ~£700 cheaper for each rear wheel.

  • Swapping a wheel is much quicker/easier than swapping cranks.

I can keep the driveline the same as well since I can swap the cassette if need be, also quicker than swapping chainrings.

I could have power on all my bikes with one Powertap hub.
In fact, if I had thought about it I would have used a 32h wheel and simply fitted a wheel cover to it for racing. Instant disc. ~£6000 cheaper for 4 bikes worth of power.

  • ..advantage hippy..

    new balls please

  • 2 of them are screwed though.. which is why I'm bitching about them at the moment. They were the two that have had problems since being overhauled by Paligap so I'm blaming the servicing for now rather than the devices. I'd still like to try an SRM to see how they compare but cyclepowermeters don't hire 'em any more.

  • Why would you be swapping cranks?

In the second hand market wireless power taps go for around the same as wired SRM, so you could make an attempt at a direct swap.

You could then take a whole load of rear wheels with you to a race, and just use whatever wheel you fancied, or take a wheel from a neutral support person, or a mate, or grab one from a friendly competitor, or buy one from a shop at the halfway point etc etc.

Difference is that you change from "this wheel has power" to "this bike has power".

I ride three bikes for different things, that's why I'd be swapping cranks.

I don't do wires so I'm looking at £1500-2500 without a head unit.

Except it's £1500-2500 x 3 for the 3 bikes. I could get away with x 2 but if I only had one SRM and mid-24hr TT the SRM dies.. no spare, no power, no pacing.

I already have spare powertap wheels.

  • Would you want to use a Powercontrol or stick with your Garmin?

The don't do wires thing is understandable, but makes life expensive- I looked at it, and saved £2,000 by opting for a wire on the underside of the downtube.

Anyway, sounds like you are entrenched in your view that Powertaps are better than anything else, and if you are happy with them why not.

  • I've not used Powercontrol which is why I'd want to try it first. Or save £600+ and use Garmin but I prefer the simple Powertap headunit to the Garmin for everything except night riding.

Wires make swapping stuff even more annoying. Definitely wireless.

'entrenched they are better'? I'm annoyed with waterlogged Powertaps and looking to try an SRM, how is that entrenched?!

I'm just not going to spend a shit load of cash unless it's definitely going to be better. So far, they look to be technically on par, with PT edging it because I know the system and own them already. If someone rented wireless SRMs I'd be all over it.

  • You could buy a second hand SRM system, try it and then sell it for the same money +/- £50 after a couple of months.

Cheaper than renting if you a) have the cash and b) don't get a duffer.

  • Can you two just fuck already. The sexual energy is strangling me.

That's what I've been trying to do since I can't find a rental.
I want a DA 7800 or 7900 172.5mm unit to try out, pref. wireless.
There was a 175mm on ebay for £1500.
I would buy a new one but stuff like that loses too much value from new -> used.
