  • Got the Westerley list? :)

Actually Ben has been setting most of them this year, some in the same events as you got yours, and some with similar times.
Apart from the 12 hour record, of course which, come to think of it, I set in the same event as you got yours. But you'd find that one too easy to be worth the trouble!

  • there is plenty of thread engagement on both sprocket and lockring... Is it going to kill me?

If there really is plenty of thread engagement with a 2.5mm spacer under the sprocket, how was the lock ring making contact with the sprocket previously?

  • Gah! You always ask the difficult questions... I'll go and look again.

  • You probably know these dimensions already, but the sprocket thread is 6mm deep as is the lockring thread.

The sprocket is 6.8mm wide and therefore overhangs the lockring thread slightly when mounted without a spacer, the lockring is 4mm wide meaning that there is ~1.2mm of spare lockring thread exposed when all fitted together.

If i add a 2.5mm spacer this would mean that the sprocket has 3.5mm of thread engagement... I had hoped that this would be sufficient as 1) I'm not particularly powerful, 2) any torque will be tightening the sprocket and 3) I don't plan to do any skidding and will probably run a rear brake to save me having to rethread the cables when I switch back to gears.

Since I plan to run 2 brakes, my understanding is that the lockring would be optional anyway but I was hoping that the remaining 2.7mm thread engagement would be sufficient especially since I won't be skidding.

I take it you would advise removing the spacer?

  • I take it you would advise removing the spacer?

Yes. Skidding or not, you only have about 70% of the desired thread engagement. The last thing you want is to strip the hub threads with your awesome starting power. As you say, you can run suicide mode if you leave the second brake on, so my recommendation (and what I use on my suicide lo-pro) is a Trialtech sprocket, which has 10mm of threads so it sticks out about 3mm further than a normal track sprocket while engaging all of the hub threads.

  • Interesting. Sadly the race is tomorrow so no more shopping time.

I've removed the spacer and I think the best bet is to try swapping the entire drivetrain over from the track frame and see if that works.

  • Relax, I'm in too many clubs as it is. :)

I'd still like to hit the 40s for my 25 and crack 300 for the 12hr but it's gonna depend on tabr training.

  • I'm going to take up beer. Seems to work as well as training!

  • Don't stress pet, you're still faster than me... I just have way more fun :P

  • 1:05 at the Q25/12 this morning, my first ever proper TT. Never managed to get comfortable, and was a little over geared, but not knowing what to hope for I was just aiming for less than 1:15.

I wouldn't say I enjoyed it, but I wouldn't rule out another one.

  • That's a good time for your first attempt, well done.

  • Never managed to get comfortable

Welcome to the world of TTs.

  • Someone was after a Zipp track axle conversion kit: http://www.timetriallingforum.co.uk/index.php?showtopic=114081

  • Me, thank you. Unfortunately i need the converter for the 182 hub (the ones with the red/blue freehub body).

  • Someone was after a Zipp track axle conversion

'twas @ewanmac and he needed the 182 hub version, not the 188

  • U28 hard rider today. Complete opposite to the f11/10 av speed just under 20mph and 2500ft of climbing.

  • Well done, good time on a tricky morning down on the marsh.

  • Thanks. Are you the Sam who was also riding, as well as giving the helpful tips I never acknowledged in the last couple of weeks?

I seem to have been given 8 bonus minutes by the organisers on the official results.

And another rider who was a DNS as he's in Belgium also did pretty well considering.

  • No problem! I was the slower of the two Sams on the result sheet.

I'd drop an email to the organiser, as it suggests a few peoples times might be out.

  • After all the faff I got a working setup after transferring the entire drivetrain across from my tark bike. Thanks for all the advice @mdcc_tester

I geared for 22:25 but after a busy week I was 30w down on my normal tt power so only managed 22:45. It definitely felt very heavy coming back into the headwind. Fixed gear pb and good enough for 3rd and my first time in the prize money so happy overall.

Also since I was spannering I took a punt on moving my extensions into more of a mantis position (15°). I've not estimated my cda yet but not sure if I like it, it felt OK most of the time but far less stable in crosswinds; I wouldn't be surprised if it was a bit quicker than flat forearms though (I was 20sec slower, but 30w weaker than my course pb).

Simmonds sets new women's comp record with a 19:18

  • Just noticed I'm not the only person on the train to Tring nailing beetroot juice at the moment. He's not off to TT though, do people actually like this stuff?!

  • do people actually like this stuff?!

Why wouldn't they? All it's missing is a blob of smetana in the middle :-)

  • That does look better than from an SIS bottle, I'll concede.

  • from an SIS bottle

How much are you drinking?? I usually have an espresso cup of beetroot juice every morning (about 60ml or so). I started because I heard people raving about it and figured I may as well give it a try. However I've since read that in order to have the claimed benefits you'd need to be drinking impossible quantities. It tasted weird at first but now i do it just because I like it.
