Worst case scenario is a hot day and you could need up to 12 litres of drinks, so that's what your plan should include.
Unlikely I would drink anywhere near that. There's no such thing as a 'hot' day in England ;)
I did the 100 with ~2.2L and I've never consumed near 12L during a sportive or other long ride. -

Still a way to go then, your first milestone on Medium Gear is 28:00, as that's 100rpm.
Well yeah, but it's my 2nd ever (official) TT and my only training is my daily commute + a 40 miler on a weekend. Like I said, quite a slow course with hills. The majority of the pack beat me by about a minute, and considering most everyone else was rocking a TT bike with Zipps and discs, I'm not beating myself up too much.

On another note, the president of my local club is 80, and going strong! Couldn't believe it when he told me.

just moved back to the countryside for a while and found a local club that do evening TTs every now and again.. They've got an introductory 5 miler which is very flat.. What'd be a good time/average speed to aim for on my first try? Gearing will probably be 52x18 (75 inches)

Best thing would be to ignore what other people's 'bests' are and just go do it. Ride hard, remembering it's 5mi not 500m and see what you do. Then beat it next week. Rinse. Repeat.

I wasn't taking the piss, just pointing out a handy first milestone to give you some encouragement.

My dad's 80 and still going, although possibly not strong. Still manages to beat some people 20, 30 and 40 years his junior, but not the star supervets out there; the age record for 80 at 10 miles is 22:56!

Thanks, the target is set then.

Jesus christ, that is unbelievable. I can't comprehend ever going that fast, and I'm 21. Fair play to your dad too.

Beware, Harry, it's a trap! Testers are NEVER satisfied with their times. He's trying to lure you in. ;)

I don't suppose you can EVER be satisfied with a time unless you're the fastest there ever has been.
He told me if I beat 28.00, he'd give me some sweeties from the back of his van.

The fastest there has ever been reckons they could have been faster. :)

Conclusion: There is no such thing as fast enough.

Not so fast! ;)

So true, read the reports of Hutch's competition record ride the other day and it's all about it not being the best day the course has seen, not having the short distance form he had earlier in the year, etc. etc.

Yes there is, it's 0:0.01 faster than the world record.

No, you're wrong. Listen to Usain Bolt, for example, after he set the 100m world record at the 2008 Olympics and he was mostly talking about how much faster he felt he would be able to go in the future. It is characteristic of record breakers that they don't want to beat the previous record, they want to put down a mark which nobody else will beat for a long time to come.

I know that you proper TT'ers will laugh, but during the 40k section of the triathlon, I didn't push much at all (was chatting for a while on the 1st lap) and after a swim which was agony, managed a 1:07...
I think I'd be able to drop it to 1:00 or thereabouts, without much trouble and was wondering what times to strive for?
I can see myself enjoying TTs. -
• #1346
Under the hour for 25 miles should be your first target if you think you can do the 40k bike leg in an hour.
-
• #1347
are there any 25 mile TT's around?
is it worth hitting the gym?
should I just cycle lots?
what's a respectable 25 mile time?
what's a competitive 25 mile time?cheers mdcc.
-my reasoning is- at no point before this triathlon did I do a 40k.
in fact, I had put hardly any training in, beyond occasional commutes and occasional runs and swims.
this month should see a sig change, as my result was a massive confidence boost.
(49th out of 113 in my age group) -

Under the hour is respectable, on a good course you're likely to need under 51 min. to get in the prizes. Plenty of 25s left this season, join a cycling club (mandatory for open events) and borrow somebody's handbook and have a look.

great.

Did a PB on Richmond Park in the TT yesterday, slowly getting there and it's not easy doing it on that course and don't forget it's 10.4 miles.
did 28.30 - 22.00 average
Pleased
How much do you think I like TTing? I'd have to pay for the fuckers accom. and travel AND pay to hand me bottles? Fuck that. Maybe for a 24hr but not this. Dehydration ftw.
