A short ride to the area, maybe from Hyde Park, and a moment of silence at the spot.

The spokecard, I think would be a constant reminder/tribute. Everybody could donate £1/£2 for a spokecard on the day and the money donated to the family, or charity of their choice.

Any further action to prevent another death too would be long overdue.

    2) Have a ghost bike built up out of the collective donation of spare parts by many forum members.
    5) Start taking donations, either directly or at the memorial ride (if there is one)... view to send the money to a charity that Eilidh cared about, part-spend on flowers for the family, things like that.

    IMHO.

A bike shape arrangement of flowers for the funeral would be a nice touch - i got a florist coming back to be with a quote. anyone know what colour the bike was?

Charity wise there is typically a collection at the funeral so it would make sense to find out what that was.
Can I suggest all the communication goes through one person (VB) to take the load of Velcro

  • OK £400 for funeral flowers in the shape of a bike - her bikes colours (if we have them)

  • Damn you for volunteering me! That's why I made the thread... I'm appallingly organised.

But yeah, I don't mind... whatever needs doing, so long as I know what it is, it will be done.

  • According to the OP in the other thread it was a multicoloured lo pro. Pm Hael see if he's got any more knowledge.

  • OK DK i'll split it.
I'll get the Ghost bike and sort the funeral flowers should that be a goer, if you can arrange means to donate.

Fred/Shins - Can one of you arrange a ride where we take a collection, fix her bike down and mark our respect.

  • ^^ i think that is a really nice idea. a very large number of people who didn't even know eilidh (this forum community) are deeply shocked and saddened over this right now, i'm sure i'm not the only one to have tears in my eyes, and her family (probably) has no idea that we even exist. a showing of that solidarity would probably be really meaningful to them.

  • I have no idea how much 'normal' funeral flowers cost but £400 seems like a lot of money which could go to charity or good cause. Not saying scrap the flowers but to me better things could be done with that sum of money. My 2p

  • you still doing the ghost bike thing at armourtx tomorrow Greasy? volunteers were needed I seem to recall

  • shouldn't we ask velcro for his thoughts?

    +100

  • i think a ride, and a donation of some sort, plus a discrete bouquet of flowers at the funeral would be most fitting, but will do whatever is the general consensus..

  • Although I am sure eilidh was a very competent rider (I know very few in person on here) I think there needs to be campaign involving RoSPA to make cyclists aware of the danger, all the above suggestions are good, the Make Some Noise thing would be a good press piece to make both cyclist and drivers aware that there is a real danger out there on the roads, that some seem oblivious to.

I would be willing to contribute to a fund if something is set up, and happy to have any suggestions for a campaign concept.

  • some one set up a pay pal account so we could donate money?

  • I think Paypal setting uppage should be saved untill blessing has been given by velcro. dont jump the gun people...

i'm down for that once we hear back. time for respect.

  • yes, we're all feeling a degree of emotion about this. lets let the waters settle. its warming to know everyone is supportive of a member's loss, so lets take it slow and know we're all walking the same path

agreed. Let's talk to Hael first? will PM you

Armourtexs saw the article in the Sun and had time that day so stripped them all themselves to help get them out quicker.. those guys are pure 531!

i'm down for that once we hear back. time for respect.

Couldn't have said it better RayGun. time indeed!

  • Although I am sure eilidh was a very competent rider (I know very few in person on here) I think there needs to be campaign involving RoSPA to make cyclists aware of the danger

I'm a competent rider (I hope), and I was nearly knocked off on Wednesday by a flatbed (one of those things you just deal with at the time by stopping suddenly and leaning left, and then to carry on afterwards just dismiss it so that your blood isn't boiling and you're not endangering yourself further).

What I see on the roads from both being a cyclist and occasionally driving, is that most drivers operate on the assumption that there is a space between their vehicle and the curb unless they learn otherwise. Which means if they haven't checked their mirrors thoroughly, if they don't know for sure... they will move into occupied space.

What I'd like to see is a change in that assumption so that what is assumed is that there is a cyclist between them and the curb, unless they learn otherwise. Meaning if they don't know otherwise... assume someone is there and don't go into the space.

If we're campaigning then the changing of that basic assumption is where I personally feel we should focus. It sounds like it should be a TFL campaign, a proper thing to focus on how drivers see cyclists on the road.

This was part done in the white teddy bear adverts, but the message wasn't strong or plain enough (people enjoyed the adverts but seemed to not know what it was telling them... they didn't connect it with road safety, just entertainment - well, my workmates saw it that way).

  • some one set up a pay pal account so we could donate money?

I disabled the forum donate button. Should it be needed I'll change the code behind it and turn it back on. Effectively the infrastructure for donations is there once we have the green light.

  • The rider could have anyone of us... i think that's why its caused such a reaction.

for the first time in ages i actually mean this... ride safe.

  • for me, flowers are fleeting and i think people soon find them prosaic.. so i'm not really feeling that as a lasting gift.. but the charity donation and a memorial ride i think would be truly momentous.

It would be a fitting beginning to a serious campaign that could really finally shake some feathers.

the legacy really has to last, and we are as strong, gifted and able to make real change as any.

respects to all of you looking to make something good from something tragic and far too common.

  • I think a collection is the way to go. There's enough forum members on here to make a good contribution in her name to a worthy cause (if Velcro's willing of course)

  • I think a ghost bike is a much better idea than most, this shows respect and gives friends, family and others a place to reflect and mourn. I also think a HUGE go slow ride through london is needed to highlight the need for something to be done about HGV's.

  • This might be interpreted as tasteless, but I see 150 white-taped 'ghost' bikes cruising the streets of London, loads of photos, loads of noise, alert the right people, let them know things need to be taken seriously if we're to make these streets as safe as they should be.
