No snow here, and it definitely doesn't feel cold enough.

Where do you live?
Newcastle-upon-Tyne.

I can well imagine that you get more snow there!

I know how you feel, just waiting for it to snow properly so I can actually have some great ride at night time, nothing look so good under the bright moonlight.

Going up hills, into a headwind, in the snow, at night, giving it some game face is what makes winter awesome.

I put my winter tyres on last weekend so am looking forward to snow! riding in the snow last year was great fun. i was the only person who made it in to my uni class for around three days!

@ nefarious, I don't know how old you are but I'm sure I'm older than you, and I still enjoy that sort of riding, even though we're snowless down here in London.
by the way, do you know my son? he lives in Newcastle.

I bet he does, Ian, I bet he does. ;)

Age never stopped my old boss in his 60s smashing out the miles in winter.
Your son ride fixed? Apart from the student influx every year, the fixed community is pretty small/everyone knows each other.

It's not yet winter.
It is to me. So not made for this weather. Cycling helps though.

I rode into werk through the snow in Berlin this morning. It was lovely, especially with all the Christmas markets having just been set up and everything. Snow doubleplusgood.

The original post of this thread is great. It is cold enough to snow I'd say. It doesn't snow when it gets too cold.

You can't beat the winter ride when you are dressed just right and toasty warm.
I normally run 700x23 Conti Gatorskins throughout the winter for my London commute...does anybody have any recommendations for a tyre better suited to the next two weeks of frosty mornings and wintry showers?

clearly no-one in their right minds ever wears shorts in this country, apart from during very occasional freakily hot sunshine every 2-3 years.

@ jeez, are you by any chance Ian from SA? if so, I met you on the ride north ride last weekend. must be nice to ride in a climate where it never really gets cold!

About 6inches on the ground where I am w/ regular snowfall. Riding in tomorrow will be interesting.

I have a 4 mile cycle on country roads, then through a small town to the railway station before I arrive in London (and thence to pretty much anywhere depending on my day). The roads can get icy...
Do you reckon it's safer to go to freewheel? I have a nifty rear hub that can go fixed/free with a turn of a screw.
Any thoughts on winter/studded tyres?

There's a indepth thread on winter tyres.
As for free or fixed. Free every time for me. Sometimes you need keep your body completely still, and let the bike roll over the worse stuff. I,ve never mastered fixed off road either though.

It's was a limited choice.. I'm sure there's more options out there...
