I don't want clincher rims
I am not sure I even want aero rims
do people use aero rims on a track ?
don't these add more weight for little advantage?
what I am thinking
is what would be a medium to light track rim
circa 1990low profile omega V 's 36 hole in black? is this sounding about right?
I know Atlanta and Shamals are all the rage but with this groupset I want it period correct

My Sheriff's are laced to Omega V Black Clinchers.
Wanted tubulars but they are difficult to source.
CampyOldy don't expect to get them anytime soon.
There were some two pair on eBay within the last two weeks but sold for more than I wanted to pay.
How many holes are your hubs Buddha?
See my above post, he's got 24h TUBS in Black, £53 a pair

You'll need to get OMEGA 19s then(19mm profile)
V's are a bit deeper, about 26/28mm I think

Hi dmc. Am getting those Mavic CP 4 tubulars you sold me laced up to some High Flange Dura Ace 7600s.
Sent them off to that Harry Rowaland geezer in Kent. Should have a mega stiff fast wheel when they are finished

Good combination!
You'll be happy.

Those Seoul rims have a nice profile and a really nice decal the black ones are to die for....I can see those wrapped in some veloflex
Sheriffs disappear from the catalogue by 1992 by 1994 the Shamals and Ventos are in. Campagnolo does not list Seoul or Barcelona rims in 1988 -1992 catalogue(Seoul Olympics were 1988, Barcelona 1992, Altanta 1996) I might be wrong but did not Campagnolo actually make these Olympic brand rims later using prior Olympics for branding ?
So I am thinking is that although those Seoul rims do look rather nice Omega's are most probably period correct. Having said that in 1990 Campagnolo were making Omega V profile rims almost identical to those Seoul rims listed so it ain't a huge faux pas to fit up a pair of retro Seoul aero rims but what I can figure is this?
What exactly are Aero sprint rims? are they for the road or for the track? and if they are track rims why aero? and how does it make a difference over track distance except for adding weight?
I know this all sounds a bit anal but I don't want to take a pair of NOS sheriff stars and fit them to anything but the 'right' rims as my bikes are being to err towards restorations/replications
Thanks for the input guys I love talking about bikes...:)

I received a set of Mavic GP4 rims for the Pinarello today. The Nisi rims were just too lightweight for the cobbles here. I am going to wrap them in some Continental Gatorskins the idea being that I can go distance without warps or punctures. The mavic rims are not quiet as sexy as the nisi rims but they look very business like and functional. I am glad it is not just me and DMC who are wed to our tubulars

Seoul rims are rebadged Omega's.
Same rims as I understand it but just a little later.
Pull the Seoul sticker off if you need to.
Sprint rims means tubulars.

So DMC what about aeros for the track? I guess this is yes because you can buy pista Shamals; but why is this so ? doesn't the added weight not offset the aero advantage? Just curious like
-
• #40
The aero advantage is seen most in timed events.
-
• #41
Yes in time trials over a long distance but don't track racers value weight saving over aero efficiency

I was always under the impression that low weight has less value on a track due to there being no hills. Thats why I went for a relatively heavy extremely stiff and hopefully fast wheelset. I may be wrong though

ohh and my new frame and fork combo only weighs 1.4 kgs so I don't mind a bit of weight on the wheels ;)

• #44
what frame you got Mike?

I have got myself one of these badboys. As I am going to put the best possible components on it. I don't expect to get it on the track before July to be honest

Agreed, weight doesn't really come into it on the track. Stiffness for sprint events, aero for timed and a mix of the two for mass start
-
• #48
So are aero rims stiffer than lo-pros?

I'm no expert but....
On the track, aero-dynamics and stiffness are more important than weight. This is partly due to the lack of hills, but I'm sure there are other considerations (lack of side wind. more constant speed etc.). Really stiff aero wheels are also better suited for use on a smooth track surface.Wiggin's Dolan was built with two down tubes (one as a top tube) to increase stiffness, and has steel forks. Even without gears or brakes, it weighs in at just over 7.8 Kg, a full kilo more than most professional road bikes (UCI min = 6.8).

So the long and short of it then is that those Seoul 1988 aero rims are the correct era and the correct style of rim for the Sheriff stars - in which case I am going to bid - thank you for the info chaps - I love talking about bikes and I learned a thing or two today
