The OP raises a reasonable question and I have to say the rather puerile responses have not been merited.
A puncture is not something to take lightly. It is God's way of telling you something. You have to discover exactly what. That is your mission and it is a mission from God. I would suggest buying a clapped out police car, forming a band and driving from Chicago to Milwaukee. Just an idea but, I think you'll agree, a good one.

what if you get a puncture while driving from Chicago to Milwaukee?

There is probably no such thing as a puncture

<< "Like DFP said but also run your hand round the inside of tyre to find what caused the puncture, go slowly and gently so you don't cut your hand." >>
.........followed your advice and cleaned it out!

That would be God's way of telling you that He really doesn't like you.

For a minute there I thought you were claiming that your tyre owned/rented property.

... had to lock the bike up in front of Waterloo station and bus it back home. Will bus back there in the morning to get Evans to fix it... hope it's there :/
A random female cyclist was nice enough to offer to lend me her fat Abus Steel-o-flex but I couldn't accept.

It may seem an odd question to you, but why don't you carry the minimum needed to repair a puncture?
Mini-pump
Spare tube
2 tyre levers
15mm spanner, or Multi-toolDoes that really take up too much space / weigh too much / stop you from looking cool?
EDIT: Some pertinient threads

Carrying puncture repair stuff
If you can't change a puncture, don't fecking ride a bike -

Be carefull not to focus on the wrong issue as that could waste time!
This is a small matter of displacement. the air inside your tube wanted to leave, it felt being inside that tube was exposing itself to a pressure higher than its fellow air element friends on the outside.Don't fight it, don't go to such lengths trying to force the air into that tiny tube, instead remove all the surrounding air elements and allow the air to realise in its own time, the inside of that tube is a good place to be.
Best answer ever! Like the Person-Centred (Air-Centred?) approach to psychotherapy.
How would you do it a'la Psychoanalysis?

First time ever I've gone out without a spare tube, pump, levers and repair kit, guess what fucking happens?
Just had to walk for an hour with no money, Oyster card, etc. just because I thought "Aah, I won't be that long..."
Good poo Hippy?
