  • :P next time you do the Dun Run make sure you find a pub that sells the stuff

  • Very nice. I was thirsty.

  • ^ I concur. I'd never seen it before. Glad I spotted the tap and gave it a whirl. Tasty.
Wise that I didn't stay for more! :)

  • London drinker beer and cider festival kicks off today at the Camden centre. Anyone going, I'll be down tomorrow from 5

  • Old Engine Oil. I enjoyed it. Ye Olde Mitre is doing Scottish ales this month.

  • I'm heading up to Aberdeen in a couple of weeks.. I'll see what local brews they have on offer.

  • Advert for a random friend, who I trolled most excellently at FOSDEM in Brussels this year.

    The Beer Crate

We'd been drinking on the Eurostar which up until this year had stocked a certain amount(*) of Duvel. Unfortunately, this year the most Belgian beer they had was Stella. Mildly perturbed we capitulated and bought a few cans. Most of them got drunk, a few were put away for later.

Later on in the evening, during the big Beer Event(tm) in the Delerium Cafe, I spies an empty glass. "Hand me a Stella, kind sir," says I. Into the glass goes the lukewarm lagerpiss.

"'ere, Steve. What do you think of this one?" says I.

[Steve eyes it up, takes a sip, ponders a while]

"That's the Delerium Tremens from the tap"

    "O RLY?"

(*) Enough to last almost until the train began moving

  • He's an alright bloke though, all things considered, and despite my trolling he does know his beer.

    I think.

Probably worth you going to the Brewdog pub then

  • looks very trendy, I'll try to convince my hosts..

Stay away from the 51% stuff. Was the strongest in the world but someone else took the crown

  • Don't like Brewdog, new kids on the block with fucking abhorrent advertising/branding. Looks like some kind of alcopop. Seem to be doing well for themselves though.

  • I haven't actually sampled their wares so couldn't comment on that but I got a similar impression. I'm more of a traditionalist when it comes to ale (I like proper, simple names and branding, not bad jokes and 'edgy' design). All of the 'bringing a youth spin on an old man's drink' sort of guff is a little too contrived and self-aware.

I'm not going to dismiss them out of hand because of that though, if the drink is good, I'll still pay for it.

  • I think even if I liked it I still wouldn't buy it. Only if it was the only ale in the pub.

    Proper branding:

  • Going on a bit of a beano to Amsterdam this weekend, what's THE ale to drink there?

  • Brewdog's Alice Porter is bloody lovely.

  • Stout and porter, please. Fuller's London Porter is still my yardstick. Maybe it's a London thing.

Ive been mad for this ever since I read your post. I had never tried it before for some reason. The St Peters Honey Porter is pretty nice too.

Ive just ordered a Coopers Classic Dark Ale homebrew kit. Its meant to be quite chocolatey, hopefully like the London Porter.

  • when it comes to porter it's got to be Exmoor beast!

This has to be one the best bottles i have had all year - lovely drop

haha. i actually just googled that. durrrrrr.

    Save me a bottle :)

I find the honey porter a little cloying. Their normal porter isn't that different from their mild (I think the mild is nicer), and their cream stout is more like a strong medicinal porter. Very mixed up.

    Amsterdam Maximator

  • Finally visited the Bree Louise ("best real ale pub in London").

It felt like an RSL from back home. Old man pub with mixed lunch crowd. Ales and ciders in insulated kegs at the bar made it look like a beer festival. Pies were ok, though one of our lot wasn't impressed. Not as nice as Newman Arms (but what the fuck.. pies should be encased in pastry, not a fucking stew with a lid!).

Tried their own label Pilsener as I was feeling a bit rough from last night on Old Engine Oil at the Olde Mitre then a Redemption Pale Ale. Not sure either hit the spot to be honest. I'll have to go back for a proper session and try some of their dark stuff.

    Known as a Stew-pay...

Anyone who recognises what that six pack is ought to be very envious :)

  • dont know if it has been mentioned before but this is definitely worth checking out, spied it in sainsburys yesterday after a mate had ordered a load from the US so thought i would check it out. It did not dissapoint...
