Ale, Beer, Stout appreciation

  • This Friday the Beer Shop in Nunhead have both the new Cloudwater DIPA and Imperial stout on tap

  • Had a little too much fun Saturday at Beavertown... suffice to say, I had a great time!

  • Also had a great time at Beavertown, got there at 1pm, queued for 3o minutes, didn't think it was too bad inside initially, abut 4pm we left as it was packed and not really enjoyable.

Great selection of beers on offer, I could have spent days in there. I enjoyed the following beers...

    Beavertown
    Double Chin - Double IPA - 8.5%
Gamma Ray – American Pale Ale – 5.4% (free in the queue)
    'Spresso - Imperial Coffee Stout - 9.5%
Imperial Lord Smog Almighty - Imperial Smoked Porter - 11% (WOW!)

    Kernel
London Sour Damson Berliner Weisse 2.3%

    Mikkeller
New Mikkeller IIPA – Double IPA 7.9%
Spontanpeach – Spontaneously fermented ale with peaches 7.7%

    Partizan
    Raspberry & Lemon Saison – 4%

Got a Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde pack and a few cans to take away too. Would have liked to try more, but my Mrs. was frozen and it was getting a bit long queuing for everything.

Overall, I thought it was really well organised, and they did their best given the circumstances. Much rep for the volunteers who I am sure had a tough day. I don't think they could have predicted how busy it would be, I'm sure they will ticket the event in future. I hope they do something in summer as it is such a good space for events.

Went on to Wunderlust in Deptford for dinner and several more beers, can't recommend it enough if you are in South East.

  • Anyone at Craft Beer Rising next weekend?

  • We got there about half 12 and queued for about the same as well... for some reason I didn't have any Gamma as I drink it all the time, first one for me was Mr Hyde, a 13% monster, I also ended up on this as well and that might've been my downfall. Had some lovely beers from Moor and Wild Beer as well... the main tent was actually quite toasty and one of the bands blew me away. Agree that they should do a summer one as well, would be nice to stand out in the sun instead of the cold... more toilets next time though please!!!

  • I had this...

And this is fermenting at the moment.

  • Went to the beavertown thing at the weekend but didn't have a whole lot of fun. Got there at about half 1, queued for an hour and a half and made it through just before they closed the gates behind us. The volume of people just meant that you had to plan everything in advance (am I going to need to go to the loo in the next half hour?) and took the fun out of it a bit. Had a great night out after though

  • Have been reunited with my beloved Icelandic Surtur

They change it slightly every year. Last time I had it it was smoked using malts smoked in a traditional Icelandic smoke house, ie over sheep poo (I did not know that at the time of drinking). This year 8.2 is smoked and then barrel aged in Brennivin barrels and 30.1 is not smoked but barrel aged in bourbon barrels.

You can order these from http://www.101reykjavik.co.uk/ along with some other cracking Borg Beers (the snorri is excellent). I ordered these yesterday morning and they turned up an hour ago. Bloody swift.

  • "aged in Brennivín Barrels"

    Out.

  • Yeah defo not a session beer. I actually don't mind Brennivin. There is a beer in Iceland brewed with fermented shark, that I draw the line at.

  • To be fair I did drink a bit of Black Death over there so I can't be that opposed to it either. Never saw that shark beer thankfully. I need to unsub from this thread so I drink less...

  • Erdinger Alkoholfrei - tastes like a Carlsberg/chemicals... Are there any reasonable alcohol free beers or are they best avoided altogether?

  • best avoided altogether

    Winner!

  • Mikkeller's Drinkin' in the Sun is OK at 0.3% not sure where to get it though.

  • I had a couple of months off the booze last year, tried tonnes of alcohol free beer and the best one by a country mile was Bavaria 0.0% Premium Wit Beer. I still drink it now, I think it's good.

  • Nanny State?

If you can stretch to sub 3% the mighty Dark Hopfler is amazing.

  • It was on in BD Shoreditch this Wednesday

  • Siren Breakfast Stout. Yes.

  • Troubador Triple...

  • £4 a pint in the Queen's Head near Kings Cross on cask....

  • It's a really good beer. My next homebrew is going to be a coffee stout been inspired by a few good ones recently.

It was on cask at this place near Haywards Heath http://www.thestandup.co.uk/ went to visit a mate their range on cask was great. Also had Siren's Earl Grey Blonde which was also really good.

  • Everything Siren do is great tbh. My friend and I thought we come up with the brilliant concept of a breakfast stout until I saw their bottle.

Having said that I can't remember their sound wave IPA offering being all that. Good at black beer I guess.
