Ale, Beer, Stout appreciation

  • Had an Adnams mild in Southwold once years ago, never seen it since. Handsome it was.

  • i'm a big stout porter and mild fan.
you can keep the guinness though it's flavorless dishwater. it's akin to liking hogaarden and thinking that's what belgian beer is.

  • Mild doesn't keep very well and as most pubs have no idea how to look after the bottles they sell they are unlikely to be able to look after and therfore serve a decent mild.

Two of these this evening. Very nice.

  • bottles of mild? on tap is where it's at

  • My point is that if most pubs can't look after bottles, they would not then be able to look after a cask of mild.

  • Ringwood Best. Top ale.

Ringwood Best is wrong ... horrible horrible ale ... Old Thumper on the other hand is ace.

Bishop Tipple is damn good down the Goat in Bournemouth.

I have recently like the Brew Dog ... Riptide ...

  • bagged a bottle of Rogue Brewery's Shakespear Oatmeal Stout from Utoboor in Borough Market. Will be having that on Sunday. I really liked their "Dead Guy Ale" which is their renamed Mayer Bock so looking forward to the Stout.

Guinness - standard/yardstick. Either draught or stout. You can get it 'stout' from the tap but only if the bar staff will take the widget off the tap for you.
Murphys - ok, lighter than Guinness, good if you think Guinness is too heavy
Beamish - very nice, almost smokey, best drunk in Cork in the pub opposite the brewery.
Samuel Smiths Oatmeal Stout - very nice but but a bit gassy, gives me the hiccups
Oyster Stout from the Porterhouse - heavy, good, rich, I imagine it would cook very well
Dragon Stout - *makes you f*ck like crazy*

    etc

I need to try some of those others though. I like the Nigerian Guinness more than the Irish one. Sweeter, and more alcoholic?

  • More alcoholic as it used to bad when it travelled so they made a more potent version that would last. Nigerian folks got a taste for it. Called Guinness Foreign Extra.

There's a load of wank about Guinness being better in Ireland but since it's now all brewed in the same place and transported in pressurised kegs it's just the pour that makes the difference. They should use a Guinness branded glass, pour at an angle up to the top of the harp, settle until it's actually fucking settled, not just wait a few seconds, then pus the tap handle back, hold the glass vertical and fill until the head goes above the rim of the glass. If the barman/woman does it any different, ask for another pint.

  • Had some of this at The Banker a few weeks back.

Very sweet and quite tasty - more tasty than their 1845, I'd say.

Not sure it was worth the £7.50 though.

  • innis & gunn. better than ^

    disgusting. Really tastes bad.

  • went to Jerusalem Tavern last night. I somehow need to convince my work that it's worth the 15min walk and make it our local

  • innis & gunn. better than ^

Harviestoun's Ola Dubh. Better than ^ Go for the 16 though, its the best. The 40 isn't worth the money, just for collectors.

Though talking of Innis & gunn, if you have an a bottle of the original casking from a few years ago, the catch a pretty penny on fleabay now.

  • I used to line the stomach with a Dragon Stout before a night out, small enough to pocket on the bus.

  • disgusting. Really tastes bad.

Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. You're completely maaaaaadddd you are.

    :D

  • Innis & Gunn, made by Gods that were good enough to leave the recipe for us mortals.

Heavenly stuff. In my overly-opinionated opinion, its the most delicious ale I know.

  • innis & gunn? really? then you're one of the lucky few that can find anything drinkable in the sainsborgs in dalston, their ale section is dire

Actually, this is my best local retailer. I'm far luckier than you would think.

  • fuckin hell, lucky bastard

try the Belgian Guinness. it's an acquired taste.
    but then so is Gueze

lovely stuff you just have put the thought of bile/acidic sickup to the back of your mind.

  • I want to seek these out, just to give them a try. I like unusual tastes at times.

    Mongozo Coconut Beer
    Mongozo Banana Beer
    Suma Penumbra Stout
    Cannabia Hemp Beer
    Hollows Superior Alcoholic Ginger Beer

They may all be nasty, but then again, I may find something I like.

Lambics are some of my favourites. The Fuller's reserve has a bit of a sourish twinge to it which reminded me of them IIRC.

The Mariage Parfait is a good once to make your friends wince. I can't get enough of the stuff.

The Coconut one you can definitely get at the Porterhouse. It's sickly sweet. Not sure about the others. They also have a chilli beer which is foul (and I like both chilli and beer).

  • I just got a homebrew kit for my birthday (fermentation bucket, keg, brewing kit). I don't think I've ever been so excited, I can feel a whole new world of forums, bodging and geekery coming on. Just been looking some stuff up and it's like a different language. I'm gonna do the kit first, then I reckon it's in with both feet for the full grain brew. How long till I end up with a setup like this?
