  • Belgian beers are the best. I heart Belgium.

When I do beersofeurope orders, Rochefort and Westmalle usually feature.

  • After a very disappointing pint of Sussex recently (King and Barnes) I was forced to drink Fursty Ferret instead.
It was actually very nice which really surprised me as I thought I didnt like it.

  • I find myself devouring a pint of Jenning's Cumberland Ale even as I type this missive. Most satisfactory I must say.

  • managed to grab a la trappe quadrupel a Jan's in Stoke Newington a few weeks ago, one of the best I have had

Its trappist but dutch rather than belgian, got to get over to Bruge or similar soon!

  • I have a feeling we were drinking those at the Dutch place in the west end a few Fridays ago??
I was properly fucked by that stage though so can't remember exactly.

    De Hems is the place.

  • i enjoyed a Hobgoblin last night, now i have run out of beer and really fancy a pint or 4.

Anyone tried King Goblin? i saw it on the wychwood site but not seen it in any stores though.

I am looking forward to november and i get to drink my last Vintage Fullers (2007)
I have been saving it for my 1st wedding anniversary.
Plannign on hitting claridges for afternoon tea with the lady wife, when we get home im going to have my ale and a cuban.

  • I'm getting more and more into Belgian beers. Just got back from a little trip to Edingurgh, stubled upon a fantastic german pub called The Brauhaus, photos to follow shortly!

Good stuff, I really miss the Brauhaus. It used to be my local, ish.

  • I know where i'm drinking after work from now on! thats only 5 minutes walk away.

The Brauhaus was amazing, well worth a trip back

  • been drinking a lot of this shit. mainly cos its £1.50 a pint.....

  • Belgian beers are the best. I heart Belgium.

When I do beersofeurope orders, Rochefort and Westmalle usually feature.

On our Tour of Belgium back in August we put a few away, namely, Tongerlo, Leffe Blonde, Leffe Brun and one of my favourites Grimbergen Triple 9%, I brought some of those back with me.

@Sorethroat, Harvey's that is not kept well tends to have an antiseptic twang to it's taste.

Whychwood brewery is great, I love the Hobgoblin and Goliath beer and Whychcraft, at present I have five pints of London Pride sloshing around inside :D

  • been on a bit of a beer tour this month
    manchester:
ace brew pub called the marble inn their beers get a number before being named (if they go into general production) fantastic beers well worth seeking out.
    sheffield:
the sheffield tap, fantastic pub in the main train station with beer from the thornbridge brewery plus other guest ales from the u.k and some interesting imported lagers, their bottled beer range is the biggest i have ever seen with beers from all over the world.

have a souvenir bottle of thornbridge imperial russian stout and marble chocolate to imbibe

  • So, glaring omission of Rigwelter and Old Peculiar.

ey, don't get me wrong - if they're available i'm on it. i was just listing what i'd had that wknd - and it's very rare to find black sheep or theakstons on tap in london (apart from weak-ass-non-hand-pulled stuff like what they serve on the south bank) and like i say i try to drink london's famous local london ales when i'm here. when i'm back at the rents it's a yorkshire bitter every time lad, my stepmum puts a few riggwelter and old peculiar in the shopping basket if she knows i'll be about!

was enjoying this at the union cycle works launch in deptford last night, tasty stuff, a very malty brew

  • I can never understand the paucity of the Masham brews down South. It's not a taste thing - lots of dark nuttys sell with abandon, and it's not capacity according to the brewery (well, Theakstons anyway). One of the great pub nights of my life was spent in the Bear at Masham when it was a B+B, sadly now closed.

IMH, but practiced, O, neither of them are that great from the bottle either, which is a great shame.

  • Going to the Greenwich Union later to try out Meantime London stout. Hoping they've got it on tap rather than bottle

  • For a second there I read that as Marmite London Stout, and was immediately in something of a state of flux as to whether that was a good idea or not!

  • For a second there I read that as Marmite London Stout.. not!

    UUUUrrgh! I feel ill

  • UUUUrrgh! I feel ill

My immediate too, but then it occurred to me that, much against my expectations, I quite like Young's Chocolate Stout. Which is a bit creepy too.

  • That choccy stout's nice. Pretty heavy though. I don't think they actually put chocolate in it. It's something to do with how they roast the malt that give's it the chocolate flavour.

Titanic stout has a nice chocolate flavour too (you can buy bottles from morrison's supermarket if your interested and haven't tried it)

  • I seem to remember you're correct about the chokkie not being there. Tastes like it though. You are also correct about it not really being a session beer - hate to think what would happen the next morning.

Yes, I've had that Titanic, but not for ages. Think I might invest in a couple of bottles for the colder weather cheers!

  • Nearly:

As we approach the 2009 Ashes series, Marmite have launched a special edition of the savoury spread made with the surplus yeast from the brewing of Marston's Pedigree. Marston's, of course, being the official beer of the England cricket team so it looks like a good match. I don't suppose it tastes too different from wholesale Marmite but the branding looks great in the design of a cricket ball and it does give a promotion to beer that we would not usually see.

The limited edition of half a million jars follows a previous effort using yeast derived from Guinness in 2007. The jars should be on the shelves now but if you wish to support our cricketers in this way it will cost you £3.49 for a standard jar rather than the usual price of £2.49. Great marketing if you can pull it off.

Whether you love it or hate it, it must be better than the Aussie version, Vegemite.

Let's all eat a pot to celebrate a summer of rubbing their noses in the dust. Well, perhaps not but let's hope we see a summer of good, dry cricket.

Dont think I could physically manage a session on the youngs choccy. I once had a pint with a bit of dinner at the clockhouse on dulwich common followed by a pint of guiness. I was so full up cuz of the choccy i couldnt finish the guiness

  • ...Wish there were more pubs selling mild, but at least I can get it (not the above) locally on tap at the Jersusalem.

Zero Degrees in Blackheath brew something similar they market as Black Lager. It's not really a mild but 9 pint kegs are good for an afternoon sesh.

  • Btw Wetherspoons are having a beer festival at the end of oct start nov, with 50 differenct beers, ales and stouts. I'm hoping to try some nice stouts.

I dont really like wetherspoons pubs normally. Massive drinking sheds with 'orrible decor. The only one i like is the shakespear's head near holborn tube.

boggle I can only assume they've redone it. It got my vote for shittest pubin London. Carpet was filthy, whole bar area reeked of vomit and there were mice running around the seats.

Maybe that's why I kinda liked it (although it's didn't smell of puke last time i was in there). I quite like knackered delapidated pubs.
