  • do you know what
i have come to the conclusion that pretty much any beer / real ale tastes delicious after a long hard ride in the incessant summer sun

    Or before one.
    Or during.

  • I'm going to pop into Mr.Lawrence tomorrow, and see whats in stock.

These below seem to be readily available, so out will come the credit card.

    Meantime Raspberry Grand Cru
    Daleside Chocolate Stout
    Innis & Gunn
    Boon Kriek & Framboise
    Lindemans Kriek & Framboise
    Fruli Strawberry

I'll be sleeping off a mega taste-testing tomorrow night I think.

Mental place that, you should try the Greenwich Meantime porter it's like being in the 1750's

  • a champagne merchant in brockley
my word aren't they fancy now they've got their tube station

  • Dicki, are you from the future? What tube station?

  • Clever Pun, are you from the past? How do you remember what 1750 is like?

  • I also enjoy a bit of Innis and Gunn...has a sexy bottle which caught my eye in that funny bay under tower bridge - then it looked like the only genuine ale when I saw it in sainsburys. Very oakey flavour, little bit of honey too. But you need a real pint to wash it down.

  • I can also personally affirm the quality of this east sussex brew - the local round my parent's place. Two years waiting list for a brewery tour! what a joke. But delicious. Good for the ladies.

I believe this place in borough serves their ales, although despite its proximity I have yet to drop in. hmmmm....

  • brockley tube of course
    yes it does exist

  • Dicki that had me so confused! Ok, its not strictly part of the TUBE, but is instead, part of the TFL Overhead Rail system.

You almost had me there, my old Fokker Biplane.

  • @spybot - so does the Market Porter, which despite its poularity with suits and smug gits who have spent lots of money at borough market, does a very good range of guest beers and is a decent enough place to stand outside on a nice day

is that that tiny place at the back, with a small outside area and an even smaller bar? Or something else? Last time i was at the market looking for that brewery place thing that's supposed to be there, I found that little place and kind of got stuck

  • No you are thinking of The Rake. Very good also, more choice of continental beers but still good ales. Gets fucking packed. I have been smashed to pieces in there.

  • Clever Pun, are you from the past? How do you remember what 1750 is like?

because I drank that porter.. It says on the bottle, it's like being in the 1750's... felt the same to me maybe time travel is overrated?

  • never been to the market porter -i think that is the one near paul smith? too many smug suited types who've knocked off at about 1430 and been drinking since. As olly says, the Rake, although tiny, has a nice little atmosphere and awesome continental beer...

  • yeah that's nice. is that the place with a small brewery in it though? I've heard about such a thing at borough?

  • I don't think it has its own brewery. I could be wrong though. It always has lots of guest ales on tap. Bit of market food, stand outside, Bob's your uncle.

  • Well, last night I tried GOLDEN GLORY. Horrible stuff. FFS, I'd have been better off drinking from a golden shower.

It's got a floral smell, and that travels through (badly) to the taste. Avoid this like men in vans (automobiles or silly hipsters). ;)

  • is that the one made from peach blossom ? there is a really nice british beer with a hint of peach not as bad as it sounds

  • This weekend I tried to two more beers - Bacchus Framboise and the Wells Bombadier.

The Bacchus Frambois was an interesting drink. Raspberry flavoured, it doesn't drink well on its own. It starts off sweet, but switches immediately to an acidic aftertaste. But when drank with food, of spicy or salty content, its a revelation. Its actually a lovely beer for drinking with food. A BBC review of it also said that it accompanied bitter chocolate very well.

Wells Bombadier is the best beer/ale I've drunk since the Innis & Gunn. Its gorgous on its own, cold.....and fantastic with lunch. I'm tempted to give it a 10/10, but I'm saving that for surprises that may follow. Meanwhile, its a refreshing light tasting drink, that is pure and clean. The most quaffable ale I've had in a while. Delicious.

All the Langhams were great and Ballards bitter was excellent as usual

  • had a pint of Trumans Ale last night at The Scolt Head in De Beauvoir town. I was very impressed, quite dark but really quite refreshing, plenty recommended

  • Narse work sorethroat.

Brought back a couple of bottles from the Conniston Brewery after walking in the Lake District last week. Bluebird bitter was very toothsome indeed.

Managed to persuade my local corner shop to start stocking bottled ales last week too. Score! They got London Pride, Spitfire and some other bits including this:

    http://www.fullers.co.uk/rte.asp?id=60

Been giving it a wide berth so far at 8.5%.

Did the Fuller's Brewery a few weeks ago now and that's well worth a go if you haven't yet. It's a tenner and you get a good half-hour plus in the tasting room afterwards.

  • I tried that Golden Pride a while back. No idea it was that strong. I was probably already wankered though.
