  • Dangerous move there. Once you've done this, what are you going to do next year?

  • Well done Charlotte on that Penny, wow.

  • I'll try and get more than 3 hrs sleep before it this time too :)

  • Don't forget to pack an ordinary map too!

  • damn it scott/tricity, with more notice i'd have come with you.

  • those energy gels have gone to your heads, you crazy mofos!
    good luck though!

  • My Demons have got the better of me.
I was determined to ride Dunwich and back this time, but thanks to the route not actually being on my Garmin like it was supposed to be, and then it dying on the start of our return leg it just wasn't gonna happen and we only managed 135 miles in total...so we've decided we're gonna do it all over again this weekend.
This time Tricity Bendix and I are riding there AND back, no matter what...i just uploaded 2 routes onto my Garmin and now have an AA powered battery charger for it, so we should be sorted.
I haven't even washed the dirt off from last weekend yet :)
    Seriously?
I can't do this weekend. I hate you.

  • all about the demons....we both HAVE to do it. :)

You couldn't go anyway. You're not a demon.

  • Seeing as I have a bit of free time and an open return ticket (£1 more than a single to London and I can use it any time within a month of purchase) I'm getting the train to my parent's in Suffolk one day next week, staying the night and then riding back to London..

  • Scott, Sunday?

  • Phone Jim.

  • I salute your stupidity. x

  • Are you doing it overnight again?

  • You might want to stop here for brekkie if you do. It's the place Emilia referred to in her post. Fantastic breakfast, even for vegetarians. It's just off the A12 on the way to Ipswich. Worth a small detour I'd say.

  • Even if you know what you're doing, it can easily go very wrong. Check this ride report from this year's Exmouth Exodus:

    :o

There was an even better one from 2007, which unfortunately was lost in the fiery server death. We overtook this guy on his completely overloaded recumbent, with dozens of kilos of luggage, quite early on, and he later posted about a kind of odyssey to get to the halfway point (from memory).

  • So what are people talking about, I've tried to make sense of it but suspect I haven't read the one line that will make it all make sense.

Are you planning another Dunwich this year? Or are you already planning a coach for next year?

If it's the latter, and the SJS Cycles sponsorship gets beyond the 3 month trial, then I would be quite happy to cover the cost of 1 coach and a furniture van to carry bikes and people back to Hackney and then continue a bit and drop the rest in Hammesmith.

I'll state that now, and if the sponsorship thing works out this will be my big investment from it beyond server costs.

  • It is indeed for next year.... and wow!

  • coach for next year.

we're looking at either a coach and van (for bikes), or possibly a coach with trailer.

circa 25 seats but maybe a bigger one if there's demand.

coach will carry dry clothes, BBQ, ice-cream & beer (& hippy's inflatable arm bands) up to Dunwich.

  • VB I think you should consider this carefully - if people pay, they're going to turn up. if they don't (because you pay) you'll have more last minute drop outs. Maybe you could sponsor half the cost or something.

    just my 2p, I think it's a wonderful gesture.

I would suggest against a furniture van unless someone has a Cat C licence to use. You;d only end up spending a premium on hiring a driver on a Sunday. You'd be better off renting a couple of 3.5 tonne trucks. The bus is a different matter though, unless someone around here is a PSV driver. My advice is to clarify your offer closer to the time, in the interests of economics.

  • No no, there's enough people that did it this year.

If, and only if, SJS Cycles sponsorship gets beyond the 3 month trial period, then I will take the small difference each month and re-invest in a few things, the most considerable of these would be a coach and furniture van for the Dunwich Dynamo, with the aim of supporting "up to" the capacity of the coach.

The coach being the coach is a fixed cost from 20 people to 50, but the variable depending on the attendance would be 1 or 2 vans for the bikes. So if I charge anything it would be a token charge to help cover the van side of things.

And hey... the way I view it, if you're supporting the sponsor, and you're buying stuff from them, then they're giving me some cash, and I'm pushing it back to you lot. So you guys effectively are paying for it just by opting to help support the sponsor. So it's no skin off my nose and this is/was the one thing that was a definite thing that I said I'd do if we got sponsorship.

  • Just trying to imagine what a coach full of forumengers is going to be like after the DD and who the poor suckers are going to be who have to drive the trucks full of expensive geared and fixie-skidder bikes back to the Smoke.

  • Fair play. My offer to drive a 3.5 to a feed stop for those that are either veganegers or don't fancy getting cold for an hour and then on to the beach stands. Also means that brews, beers and bikinis are a viable option.
