Overnight to Brighton

  • When we did the Much Haddam night ride I just stuck in with the guy who had the light I've now bought, so my point is, if we ride quite close, but safe, not everyone will need megalumens.

Warm foot and hand-coverings, now there's a must.

  • second dibs on dropouts's spare front...;)

Haha! noted. Keep your hands off my front ya perve.

  • I was gonna say "I'll keep to your rear end then" after your post about Much Haddam but I withdraw hastily.....

btw good to see you back on the forum buddy....

  • Good to be back. This is very off-thread, but as ameasure of how long I've been gone: Hillbilly's avatar has changed from a psychadelic aura-mapping to something really quite Village People-ish. And yours, my friend does look a little munchkin-like. the times they are a'changin'

  • Where have you been, then, John? Good to have you on the ride.

  • oliver- wicked info thanks.
i was more concerned about pace than anything, about 5 or 6 hours sounds grand to me.
i'm looking forward to all aspects of it.

i'm using the polaris 5 led, if anyone has a spare (and can let me know before i go shopping this week) that would be, as they say, ace.

  • I'd say some half decent lights are needed, 50 quid should do it. You'll struggle with lights from a city style light unless there is a really full moon and a clear night and smooth tarmac. Plus get a decent rear light if you don't have one already, none of these shitty useless kogs. You can not see Kog lights in anything but ideal conditions.

    I've got these http://www.ukbikestore.co.uk/Product/0/e315/electron5w-10wnimhtwinlightsystem-ehp315.html

I bought them a few years ago though and got them for alot less than listed here (£45). I think they must have been miss listed as they were alot more expensive everywhere else I looked.

They are great with both lights on but the run time is shit so I tend to keep only the low light on except for down hills.

There are loads of options out there. I'd buy two of these if I needed some lights for cheap. Put a section of road inner tube over the shaft and do a dinotte style mount system with some large O rings or large inner tubes cut up.

  • I was about to offer my spare front and rear light, but theyre only cheapish commuting ones.
do I need something like the above for the nightride?

  • No personal experience but I have read about people using the EL530 with success. I'm no expert though just what I have read about those lights.

  • Oliver, I'll hold up the back for a shift.

  • Oliver, I'll hold up the back for a shift.

    Great, Crispin, thanks!

Anyone care to join him? :)

  • i can help out at the back.

(i'm available for bar mitzvahs and weddings)

  • JimJams - more than welcome to borrow my 'oh shit my eyes' light

  • ha ha! yep, you're on BDW.. cheers buddy

  • do you want me to bring it to Westies?

  • Thanks, damo, that's brilliant. Are you two OK to share the backstopping duties between you?

  • guess so. it's just checking everyone is ok and general rounding up duties right? there's no "special" duties?

  • I've been following this thread with interest as I've enjoyed every single one of the dozen or so FNRttCs that I've done to Brighton (as well as the ones to West Wittering and Whitstable). Sadly, however, I've got to stay put in SE23 to supervise whatever my children are planning to do that weekend so I won't be able to join you guys.

There won't be any moonlight for you this weekend, but the usefulness of the moon is limited anyway, particularly where the route takes you through woods (the beginning of Slugwash Lane is seriously dark).

My experience of lights is that bright ones are useful but something like the EL530 is plenty if you're part of a bunch, and that you should think twice before using anything bright and flashy at the back as this will irritate the hell out of anyone following you (although they'll be too polite to tell you to your face) and there'll be very little traffic coming up behind you on that route.

Are you planning to use the service lift to get into the arrivals area at Gatwick? That'll be a laugh!

Have a great ride and give my regards to the Beacon.

  • I've got a good Light in Motion so can offer front services for dark descents, but will have to change my gearing, as much too high on 3 bikes at present.

  • guess so. it's just checking everyone is ok and general rounding up duties right? there's no "special" duties?

No, not really, I'll just give you a sealed plastic bag to swallow at the beginning of the ride, but nothing much to worry about. ;)

Backstopping just means that if someone has to stop, you stop with them, so that you're always the last rider. You'll also be in mobile contact with the front just in case it disappears up the road so that we can re-group quickly. That's it.

  • think i can manage that.
