er, I mean what I said.
Helmet might save your life, it might not....depends on the incident. It certainly won't save your limbs, torso, neck or face.
Cyclists greatest threat from injury on the road is from motorists, wearing a helmet doesn't change this, it may change the severity of the injury in SOME incidents, not the frequency of incidents....
What will reduce your risk of injury is removing incompetent drivers who are not just a danger to cylcists, but pedestrians, other car drivers, themselves and their own passengers, or getting motorists to switch to cycling.
+1 couldn't have put it so well myself

Someone drove into the back of my bike while I was stationary in a traffic queue once. I had to get off and forcibly remove my back wheel from his bumper.

Sure it wasn't a courier in a car? Did he shake his head at you?
-
• #30
It probably was. Those bastard couriers, they think they're so superior.

I do the slowing down hand signal too (like signalling, but waving arm up and down a bit) - either they realise you're slowing and give you more room, or get confused by the unknown signal, and give you more room.
If I'm being tail-gated, I show them my palm, with my fingers pointing downwards, and do a sort of 'back off, please thank you very much' gesture.
They won't work if the driver's psychotic/daydreaming/otherwise distracted, but what can you do...

I had a nice one going down Victoria street. A van chanced a right turn right in front of me. Little did I know there was a twat in rover tailgating him. He smashes into me. Bike was a wreck, I'm bleeding. Then the bastard gets all sobby and tells me his daughter died in bicycle accident. How do you like that!

thats about as ironic as things get, should have known better than to tailgate a cyclist though, the silly bugger

I think its quite common - cyclist gets crashed into by car , car driver bursts into tears

It's not that I disagree with you, but all of us have to take responsibility for ourselves don't we? I'm not going to wait until the day that the road, and road users, fit to my own standards because it ain't gonna happen. I also think it's easier to point fingers at other road users, but everyone has their story. Us cyclists can be a bit holier than thou sometimes, and it doesn't enamour people to our cause (if by 'switch to cycling' you're implying a political/eco switch)
i was about 10 meters from the actual turn, so i was literally just about to
Ten meters is not enough, sorry.
I'm just as guilty myself, btw, most times I don't even signal, so I'm not having a go at you!
What I do ALWAYS do though, is make sure I know what's going on behind me before I change direction or speed, and, as a previous poster stated, be prepared to alter my course as necessary; there's no point being technically right if I'm in a wheelchair.I don't mean to be contentious, I just think that we need to smarten up our own riding rather than wasting energy raging/wishing other people would change.

Never happened to me. Fucking outrageous.
Next time it happens go to the back of his cab and take down his PCO number - that's the number on the white plate, not the registration number.
Then make a formal complaint to the PCO (Public Carriage Office: https://www.tfl.gov.uk/tfl/contact/pco/default.aspx). If you don't come over like a self-righteous cyclist, they will take a complaint very seriously, and cabbies have been known to be disciplined (fined whatever) for unsocial behaviour.
Do it. And if you can get a witness, more's the better.

Wearing a cycle helmet is not taking responsibility for yourself, it's trying to transfer some of that responsibility to a piece of plastic designed for low-speed, low-impact collisions.
Information on helmets here:
And--what Winston said.

I've not been advocating the wearing of helmets, I don't wear one.
I've been advocating riding like a grown-up.

I think it's about time for a helmet debate on an internet cycling forum. This issue has been overlooked for far too long.

Sorry, should have made that clearer. You did say that you felt ashamed for not wearing one. Don't be.

^+1 it seems there have been too many crashes in the recent days for it to be a coincidence. perhaps the motorized bikes being allowing in bus lanes have brought about unwanted side effects to car drivers
