Riding with BMX pedals?

  • Interesting Jammy, I like it.

  • Just made some new straps for some new pedals. These will be on my lo pro when it's finished, but I'm just testing them on the raleigh for the moment.
Car seatbelts + Gusset BMX pedals.
These are the version with the "grind plate" on the bottom. Meaning they always self-right.
Not sure if I'll keep it on (it unbolts and you can wack normal pins in) but it's on there for the moment. Makes getting in the straps easier!

    time for some of this...

although probably not on your raleigh.

  • Anyone have any experience of running odyssey twisteds with clips and straps?

I've just got mine and the angle of the front of the pedal looks like it would hold off the toe clip.

Also looks like I might get quite a lot of toe strike. Anyone got any pics of their setup?

put the clip behind on the flat side and chop of the pin in the center ive got the glow in the dark ones

  • Ok, I tried fitting clips to these pedals without any joy, and ended up buying PowerGrips (£15 from Evans online delivered).

Out of the box the hardware doesn't fit so I still had to drill the grips and fit them through reflector holes. The material is quite stiff so was very tricky to fold, and hold in place to fit the bolts.

I've been running them for 2 weeks, riding every day. They work really well.

  • I doubt it suppose to be like that, normally both the strap go through the two hole in the pedal, as oppose to just the one as the photo shown.

This how it should look (minus the twist, not sure how useful that is)

Keeps the straps from sliding around so they stay in the position you want them in.

    looking good!

  • Exactly what I'm running on the trick/polo bike.

  • Have you had any problems? They don't seem likely to stretch or rip.

  • my attempt!

    what material is that?

    Old Skate belt!

  • How much of a job does a toeclip actually do?
Isnt it the strap that takes most of the force?
Iv been thinking about changing from spds to platforms and powergrip type setup but the only think i dont like is that i own/would ride in a wide variety of footwear from puffy skate shoes thru low wide slip on vans to pretty skinny cons and the powergrip type straps offer no adjustability.
My though was that if i got a set of good quality double straps couldnt i just run those on a platform pedal without a toeclip?
I dont like the look of toeclips and def want to use bmx style platforms so i can get decent grip on the bottom of them for trick n shit.

They'll probably not stay open, and on bmx pedals they'll probably move around.

Sounds like you need MKS stream (they're double sided) pedals, big clips like Soma or some plastic ones, and straps. Who gives a fuck what your pedals look like really? Just get them working.

  • Surely if these powergrips stay open then a good quality toestrap should too?
Especially if its a double strap and possibly use a set of those things for threading the 2 straps thru, i think the guy with the caps maybe made a batch and i think yanco maybe make them too?
Gonna grab try and get a set of powergrip this weekend anyway, theres an evans in the centre i work in and i usually get a bit of a discount in return for the free coffee they get from me so i can give them a try.

  • Has anybody tried running double power straps? As in putting them straight across the pedal, almost like double straps would sit. Then you could have the front one slightly tighter meaning that your foot would slide in and not through. Just a thought.

  • If your foot it sliding too far through the strap then the strap isn't tight enough.

  • I have just knocked these up, all parts from 14 (who rock) - just need to get some longer bolts from the DIY store - had to shave off the middle front stud on the pedals to get the clips snug:

I have this set up, toe strike is overcome by buying larger clips and bolting them inside the pedal mounts as opposed to on the outside like you normally would, it is the best pedal set up I have ever ridden, more comfortable and more leverage than my previous 4 gate clip/double strap set up.
I actually skidded by accident in the first hour of riding, that was scary!, and way superior to power straps IMO, I use 4 gate plastic clips from 14, i've tried power grips/straps and I think they're ok, but I like my current set up much better, it rocks :p.

  • I bodged some power straps out of an old tyre yesterday, I made them a bit too big but they seem to be holding up fine. Hopefully they will last.

Thats my set up! But I have different colours of course, just so we don't clash innit :p You're gonna love it ;)

  • Ha - great minds think alike and all that :)

I too have run stock Powergrips in the past and found them wanting mainly due to the fact the straps are not wide enough IMO - would be interested to try these out

  • if you want some 2" webbing like that, i've got a 10m role.

I to was contemplating feetbelts! but decided that they probably weren't going to differ all that much from power grips, so went for my current set up instead which I am very very happy with, ecstatic even :)
