What length are you after?

170
Compact - but willing to hunt down spiders / rings.

My choice of cranks for a new bike would also bear in mind whether or not they are compatible with a power meter, and this is where the modular cranks such as the Rotor, Hollowgram and so on really score, as you can buy a Quarq, Power2max or SRM spider and bolt it in.
You can also change from 53/39 to 50/34 very easily, again by swapping the spider out.
I have Hollowgram cranks on the crosser and the road bike, the crosser has 50/34, the road bike 53/39, but I can swap that with a large allen key and a lockring tool.
I really like this function on my S-Works carbon cranks too - switched the spider and chainrings to compact last year for the Etape, but still have the option to go back to 53/39 if I want to dabble in TT's or crits next year.
I find a compact completely fine for general riding though - I go to Wales too much to bother changing back atm (87kg and 20% gradients not much fun with a 39). -

I'm still looking for a pair of hollograms for my crosser. Only BB30 crank worth having it seems.
Rotor... I was interested, but it seems that you have to send the crank back to Rotor to swap the spiders out? I couldn't find anyone who was selling them separately. Maybe my google fu was weak.
The S-Works cranks are BB30 and 120% awesome. Super stiff and light.

Two things:
if your rear spacing is 126, you should be able to get a 130 spaced wheel in there with some effort.
I remember reading (I think on sheldon brown) that 11 spd is not such a good idea if you do the above, as the chain may rub the frame in the smallest sprocket.. May be wrong about that.
I'm > | < this close to converting my Merckx (126mm rear) from 7 spd shimano to 10 speed Veloce..
I currently have full Force group (compact) running perfectly smoothly on a converted 126 spacing steel frame - BUT I did have the stays properly respaced to 130 when I took the frame in for a respray.

Nice - did you fit them as an upgrade? Availability seems limited...?

they came with my frame. You can probably buy them direct from Specialized. They come up on ebay fairly regularly too - Dammit sent me a link to a crazy cheap set that had a SRM meter in them a couple of months ago

If they are as good as you say, this could be a barg.

• #710
fuck - awesome bargain. Get it. That's insane.

• #711
Right where can I get a new spider / rings for them and how do I get the specialized logo off?
-
• #712
Rings from anywhere you like as they're 130bcd.
Spider comes in either aluminium or carbon and costs £100 and £175 respectively.
Chainring bolts are standard and can be bought anywhere you like.
Sand the logos off and shoot over with a lacquer -
• #713
you can get the spider from Specilized.
Dov, you're wrong. My alu one cost £30 .. did come from the US though.
I used TA specialties rings.

Expect specialized shop in C/gdn will be able to sort me out with a spider? Will pop in and ask.
-
• #715
probably best to ring Specialized direct. The Specialized concept stores are just a franchise.. Just re-badged cycle surgeries
Whatever you do, don't go to the one in covent garden.

No I'm not, that's the RRP. If you find it cheaper elsewhere then fine but the price is £100 or £150
-
• #717
Ah OK will give them call. Providing the chap hasn't sold them to someone else by the time I get to Brighton tomorrow :)

I bought mine from the Specialized US online shop

edit: just checked their US site .. http://www.specialized.com/us/en/bc/SBCEqProduct.jsp?spid=56849
How the fuck can they justify upping the price from $35 to $100?! It's exactly the same part, just anodized
Really glad I got mine when I did.
Sorry Dov, my bad

Which bike did you buy one for? Not the 'dale?

Weird.

What does the new Shimano Saint groupset bring to the table?
-
• #725
to put it simply - a groupset for downhiller.
e.g. keep the chain tighter to prevent it from jumping all over the place.
