Couldn't think of a more relevant thread:
https://www.ribblecycles.co.uk/shimano-bb52-hollow-tech-ii-bb-cups
This listing states 68/73mm BB shell compatible - I thought HT2 Road/MTB BB's were differently sized to accommodate the differing axle lengths. Is the description right?I just want a new BB where I don't have to use those plastic Shimano adapters, so an older style Shimano BB (or a ££ Hope BB) would be ideal.

What cranks is it for? That's for MTB so you'll need one spacer driveside on a 73mm shell or 2 driveside, one non on a 68mm shell, spacers are 2.5mm, if you don't like plastic you could use metal spacers that equal the same amount, there are plenty about in that size.

Road ones don't use spacers as they are just for 68mm shells, but you have to use road cranks.

will it happen?
its quite clear no? They will sell it on the gear range. 9-48 cassette, new XDR standard, clutched Etap.

MTB cups are 1mm thinner than road cups. So for the same shell, you'd need a 1mm spacer each side with mtb cups to fit road cranks.
MTB cups are then used with 3 2.5mm spacers with a 68mm shell with mtb cranks.

Etap is spendy, more interested in whether Apex/Rival/Force will happen next year along with some 10-3x cassettes.

No chance.
SRAM haven’t launched a Force level eTap system yet. If they bring the 12 speed system to market next year, which may happen, it’ll take a few years before it trickles down.

the number of gears generally trickle down faster than technology though, they did it pretty quick in MTB
anyone why does anyone want 12 gears? Genuinely whats the argument?
-
• #6843
But it’s a 12 speed eTap specific system, we’ve no idea how easy it is to put that into a mechanical rear mech.
It’s also not clear when they’ll launch, eTap was seen in the wild at least 18 months before it actually came to market.

MTB eTap Eagle is coming, that'll be an easy port to Road 1x12.

yeah fair enough, I'll be the first one to 'upgrade' too!

Think he modded the stock piece

Yep you're right. There doesn't seem to be any major technical barriers for a 12 speed mechanical/cable groupset. Maybe hydro is the difficult bit

It isn't "that" simple. Yes I just added a tooth to a stock ratchet body:
However, my shifter and derailleur still use the 11 speed spacing. You'll need a XD-R hub body if you want to fit a 12th cog on it.
I
runran a 36T with the GS cage and I know Frank runs the 11-40 with a Woolfie so you should be fine. You'll need a longer chain. I bought a 118 link version of what I normally get in 114. Frank said he had to take a couple of links from it so it'd be ~116 links for 40 depending on rings, stay length, etc.
