  • Having trouble choosing a rear derailleur for a 1x functional commuting setup
Cranks will be Sram Apex or Rival 1, so have been looking at NX, GX and Rival.

NX looks functional enough and cheaps in the 1x upgrade kit, any reason I should choose anything else? The 11-42 in the NX kit is a boat anchor but well enough for intended use.

  • Get the cheapest that has exact actuation with compatibility of whatever biggest cog you want to run.

  • Still can't figure out 11sp RD difference of: NX vs Apex and GX vs Rival.
    Other than prices and weights.

  • NX = Rival/force level MTB 1x11
GX = Apex level MTB 1x11

I like the MTB cable routing on their mechs but you need an inline adjuster. The advantage of Apex 1 and Force 1 is exact actuation which means both road and MTB shifters will work with them. I dont think thats the case with NX/GX.

  • The NX and GX say "X-ACTUATION™" on the site so I guess that means yes to exact actuation?

I will be using MTB shifters for now, so cable can be adjusted on the shifter. If I ever switch to a dropbar setup an inline adjuster can always be added somewhere.

  • I dont think X actuation is exact actuation .. @Howard would know more.

  • The internet has no definite answer if X-ACTUATION = exact actuation.
But to be safe it would be best to assume MTB and Road 1x11 do not mix?

  • But to be safe it would be best to assume MTB and Road 1x11 do not mix?

Well yeah unless it says exact actuation on it they wont. So the road ones could work with MTB shifters (if it says EA) but thats stupid.

I had a similar issue but around 10 speed and thank fuck the GX 10 speed has EA.

It was Sram's USP that road and MTB mixed well. I guess they want to sell more shit.

  • So safest bet would be a MTB derailleur if I would like to switch to a dropbar setup in the near future. As Jtek seems to make an adaptor.

  • Can I buy the new DA Di2 hydro shifters/calipers yet?

  • after classics

  • Want now.

  • Where is the best place to buy current Red mechanical shifters and mechs?

  • On the subject of Sram groupset mashups, does anyone know when they changed their road shifter brake pull? Reason being I want to know if these will play nicely with hy/rd brakes.

  • they changed their road shifter brake pull

They did? SRAM not sending me a memo goddamit

Reason being I want to know if these will play nicely with hy/rd brakes.

Based on my experience with those leavers and Spyres, yes, they will.

  • MTB and Road 1x11 do not mix?

Yes - the SRAM 11 speed off road stuff does not work with the Road stuff.

But that doesn't matter as they make rival and apex equivalents. You don't need to mix and match the road & MTB stuff for a workable 1X11 setup.

  • From what I've been reading, apparently so, think it's possible just the first gen 10 speed stuff or possibly even only 9 speed and before. There is a work-around with the brakes that involves routing the cable the other side of the pinch bolt.

  • Well those Carbon rival leavers are real late issue anyway, so I'd go for it.

  • Thanks!

Thing is, I want a 110bcd crank for larger rings, but also trigger shifters for a riser setup. Will just get a Apex/Rival Crank and an NX/GX RD.
If I ever switch to a dropbar setup, which would also require other forks, stem and whatnot, will just get a road RD.

  • Anyone seen any deals on 105 5800 lately, or is £350 the best price at the moment?

  • Cheers! I should probably have noted that ideally it'd be 52-36 / 11-28, 175mm cranks. :)

  • So this:
