I'm just having my Dave Yates restored / resprayed by Dave Yates - when it comes back I'm thinking of building it up with campag Athena (always been shimao Ultegra on all my bikes to date). Anyone with experience of Athena they can share?
I have it and I like it a lot, but the only other modern groupsets I have used extensively are Campagnolo Veloce and Shimano 105.

@ DJM778
I've got Super Record on the posh bike and Chorus on the other. If is hadn't been for the steel of a price I got a second hand Chorus group for I'd have happily gone Athena (Having played with it on the Missus bike). -

Better groupset on your hack then I have on my best bike? Way to make me feel depressed.

Have to tune it occasionally, (maybe once every two months).

Just poor grammar, I'm afraid. -

Sorry. -

I've never had any tuning problems with 11 speed set ups (and have the same as Em, i.e. Super Record and Chorus).

I've been running Athena for about 3 weeks now and can't fault it at all. Spent lunchtime climbing on it and both front and rear derailleurs worked crisply and faultlessly, and under load. The hoods are brilliant, and I got the carbon levers which I like a lot. Braking is decent enough, and its all very, very shiney
That all said I have literally zero experience of any other road groupset....

Parker International are doing up to 30% off Campagnolo stuff at the moment, including groups...

How come campag cranks look so nice yet shimano look shit bangs head on wall

Shimano want to sort that out. Despite running Dura Ace shifters/mecs on my main bike and being very happy with it, the fugly array of Shimano cranks meant that I completely dismissed any Shimano groupset options for a new build. (I went with SRAM Force which, from a purely aesthetic point of view, I find just as nice as Campag for cranks/brakes/mecs, and the nicest for the levers/hoods.)

I have no problem with shimano cranks, actually don't think they look bad at all.

edit hippy and braker have also run them so I think you have quite a good sample of fast moving lumps that need some stopping who seem to be happy with them.
I changed my PX CNC over for DA 7900 as even with Swiss Stops I didn't like the drop in braking performance. Shimano wins. If you're lighter and/or slower than me they're still pretty good considering their weight.

I dislike the appearance of DA 7900 cranks so have 7800 on my TT bike. Cheaper too.
Performance-wise 7900 are better but I'd rather save the coin and get their next gen erectronic. -

I never make it to the end of a westlife song. I just don't have the stamina.

All this crap is Specialized's fault. They produced and cultivated a bad situation starting in the early 80's. Cyclists once craved well made parts that would last a life time. Now they just want cheap crap that collects dust in the garage. But, the customer get's what they demand ... Cheap far eastern garbage.
btw .. I ride Sram ;)
Dirty dogs.
