  • seems SRAM disagree :(

I'm gonna try it though. I suspect it will be fine. The difference is in the rings or the spider...?

  • i think it could be pretty awfull for the peloton if they were all using discs, imagine if there was a side on gust and the rider on the side of the road is is caught off guard and drifts in, towards the peloton, causing a crash?

i've never ridden a disc so this is just me thinking out loud

  • spinning rotors in a bunch crash. Do not want.

I think most manufacturers are going for 140mm or 160mm rotors for road bikes, not Buell-style 340mm rotors which would fill up most of the hole in the middle of a Zipp 404 :-)

rings apparently - slightly further apart. I guess that mean that the chain could get dropped between the rings when shifting between them. Find that rather hard to believe though - we're talking mm's or 0.5mm not cm's.

Worst case scenario is you'll have to buy some 10spd chainrings, or swap them over if you already have them.

  • Rotor covers/guards? Do they exist?

As oppose to a spinning wheels?

The only major danger I can see is the heat of the rotor which can get pretty hot.

  • ^^they tend to be covered in a non pointy chain

  • yeah... and imagine all the fun when you get a little bit of harmless "oh whoops" front wheel/back wheel rub-rub in the bunch "oh no my silk tyre is touching your hot rotor*"

    BANG

    *Oooh err

wheels tend to be covered in those tyre things.

  • I thought you're referring to disc as finger through the rotor, and goodbye pro career, hello red hook crit.

  • Is it time to trot out the Michele Bartoli interaction with a Spinergy wheel anecdote yet?

  • The only major danger I can see is the heat of the rotor which can get pretty hot.

Not a problem, people tend to crash together on the flat, rotors will only be hot on the entry to downhill hairpins where people are usually spread out and rarely crash apart from occasionally overshooting the corner on their own.

  • Rotor covers/guards? Do they exist?

Of course, even available in crabon fribé to make them attractive to Cat 6 racers.

  • my my.. don't they look nice.

  • hahahahahaha, i thought discs as in the wheels that testers use, and there were two different conversations going on... it's been a long day

that 0.5mm would probably be counteracted by using a 10 speed chain too. Buy my crankset!! ;)

  • ha! :)

  • Whilst hanging around with professional racers, lowlifes and bike designers this sunday one of them was riding a prototype from a prestigious continental brand with tiny discs. The bike looked rad. And I have up until now not seen anything with a disc brake that I liked*

*other than the Giant tcx I guess.

  • isn't there talk of a new iso standard for them?

  • Fuck - that new 105 stuff looks good. How long until there's an electronic version?

In the meantime, some nice cheap 10 speed parts while I run my current hack into the ground.

  • might jump on the first canyon to incorporate 11sp 105

  • ^This. Or maybe a Rose. Just need the £ to strengthen against the € now.
