  • I suspect that that is bollocks, and also I challenge you to go into your nearest Evans and purchase a 5 speed screw on freewheel.

Done - they have the 5 speed Sunrace 14/28 block, £9.99 from the shop.

  • ^^ that in spades.

Pretty sure you see German and Dutch families manage to pootle all around on supermarket BSO's.

I'll test this theory at lunch.

  • Made Dammit ask for a 5 speed screw-on freewheel.

  • Why on earth would anyone in their right mind buy a 5 speed group set now? That's just fucking retarded Squabbles

  • Dammit is.

    this.

  • I find it difficult to think of touring more hardcore than an 18,000 mile round-the-world trip. Mike Hall did it on a carbon frame, carbon forks and carbon wheels with an Ultegra compact groupset. If he didn't need a 5 speed freewheel to do his ride, I very much doubt that anyone here is going to need to resort to that level of Ludditism.

  • I am currently selling a pair of Ultegra Di2 levers which I am assured are "awesome" for touring, and for the Scoble's of this world you can always use the rear-mech limit screws to lockout 50% of the cassette.

Please tell me he did it on 700x23s too.

  • You can always tour on an 8 speed Di2 if you like, perhaps a new project for a Di2 Hybrid suspension bike Dammit?

  • Please tell me he did it on 700x23s too.

IIRC Krylions were only available in 19, 23 and 25. Assuming he's not daft enough to use 19s, it must have been either 23s or 25s. This suggests he was using 25s.

  • I haven't time today, but we need a "does one short tour, is an expert on all touring" meme in this thread.

  • ha

  • how about the alfine di2 group that was on here - if it's still available?

  • Does the alfine di2 shift under load at all?

  • I thought I had first dibs on it :P

  • Also alfine di2 = early adopter

  • Does the alfine di2 shift under load at all?

AFAIK with internal gear, you still have to stop pedalling before changing gear.

  • I was hoping that some magical, electronic wizardry would mean that you can shift under load.

I have a NuVinci 360 on the cargo bike. I shift all the time while cycing up steep hills with the a load + rider + bike weight > 200kg. No worries.

Its the weight of a small moon though.

  • 12-13-14-15-16-17-18-19-21-23-25

  • Very good reason to go 11 speed.

  • The cassette for my Serotta is a "conventional" 10 speed 11-25, with a 28 tacked on for "fuck, this is steeper than it looked" moments.

It's all win, as far as I can see.
