  • I'll keep my forthcoming collaborations to myself now i think.
But you can rest assured...neither of them will affect the quality or design of my products.

but you're different scott...go on, shhh i wont tell a word.

  • Graham, you'd make an awesome after-dinner speaker,

...at the Lying Scouse Git Convention 2009

  • Depends what you class as selling out really.
If a dj or producer collabs on a sneaker project, is it really selling out if it doesn't affect the music he makes and plays?

To me, 'selling out' is only when a certain collaboration affects what you originally did.
If a dj is asked to play a certain kind of music in exchange for cash, sneakers, clothes or whatever....THAT is selling out to me.

Totally agree with ya on that.
I'm amazed it hadn't happened earlier.

Musically, he needs to pick his game up though.

Anyone got the 4-trk Era ? Would love to hear it...

  • it's a total sell-out. in fact, it's the very definition of sell-out. there is no question whatsoever that he has sold out.
He has whored his Artist name, his brand, everything that represents his music to a big company to sell some shit shoes, because they gave him a big bag of cash.

Or, to put it another way, he sold-out.

  • i'm not sure if i prefer "throwin it up her" or "shit for toothpaste"!

    either way sterling work!

  • £$€.

  • Entroducing still blows my mind. The album evokes feeling - the mark of a classic.

    Too fucking right.
He could put his name on lampshades (which would make more sense than ReeBoks), and he'll still have one of the greatest albums of the 90's. Nothing changes that.

I'm pretty sure dj Shadow has been into sneakers for a long time like a lot of artists.
So if someone who has a footwear fetish is given the opportunity to put their name to something they have an interest in (and lets face it, there wouldn't be much point in using his actual name) without it affecting the thing he is known for...in this case music...how is that selling out?

His name doesn't represent his music at all....his beats, his loops, his keys....represent his music. His name is simply a stamp that shows the person that made it...If he changed his artist name with every track he made it would still be his music.
Prince changed his name...but not his music...just like plenty of other artists.

A person is free to use their name for ANY project they have an interest in...even if the interest is solely money...if it doesn't change the way he does what he is known for then it isn't selling out,

I always find it ridiculous when people stop buying a certain kind of music or a certain brand of clothing, even though it still sounds or looks the same just because it suddenly becomes popular.

I'd say it's the fans selling out...NOT the artist.

But as usual....each to their own opinions.

  • If one of his passions is trainers, then by all means, design some cool trainers, but these ones are just gash.

  • love endtroducing and private press (fixed income wicked tune)

....and i dont mind this track either... off the outsider...
YouTube - "This Time", DJ Shadow

    or

    YouTube - Broadcast Yourself.

    but hey. W.E

  • I agree with what Scott's saying. sneakers are part of the culture so it isn't really a sell-out, is it? Interesting he went with Reebok tho'... I'd have gone for a Pump if it was my shoe, but I'm a tart...

  • I really liked Drums of Death, don't really like the other stuff I've heard...

  • I like his music, I actually like the trainers aswell(!)
I just don't want them together.

  • Thought the last album he did was pretty good but not amazing.

I preferred the private press to entroducing, the album's sound had a consistent sound throughout.... I am probably talking out of my arse on this.
