why not 10mm and just make it fit inside??

I think you'd struggle to heat all edges of a circle evenly enough, as well as being able to effectively heat the inside edges of the pipe. You'd then have trouble clamping it evenly.
Maybe take a sheet of say 8mm, use a hole saw to cut out discs to the same outside diameter of the pipe (normally 50mm or 60mm ?). Then use a forstner of say 44mm or 54mm to drill halfway through the disc so you create a sidewall on the cap.
Then you have two flat edges which can be easily faced/cleaned and (if you were feeling professional) could be heated with something like this: http://www.plasticweldingequipment.co.uk/butt-fusion-plastic-pipe-welding-plates-pr-16184.html

I don't agree, but, maybe it's just me.
I still thinking that the 10mm will work. Those plates cost £130, that is a serious inversion for a very specific machine...

Yea, I'm just throwing it out there because I found it. However, if you put it in the context that there are £90 worth of mallet head orders for the Lucky heads already then it doesn't start to look so bad*...
*those heads are tested and prototyped already though

Are they PE or ABS?

so wait, i like the sound of this acetone talk.
Can anyone enlighten me, google proves fruitless.
If you were to make an abs solution using acetone, could you use it like a glue to join an hdpe cap to an hdpe pipe? Just as long as you left it so that the acetone would evaporate out.

I've been making some mallet heads using a similar technique to Lucky . Strong as, only problem is they wear and that reduces the striking area

nice! how d'you stick the caps on?
-
• #341
The lucky ones wear as well - very dependent on court surface.

Where did you get those pieces of pipe Harvey?
-
• #343
I've been experimenting on the lathe with standard MDPE pipe and turning the cap from HDPE oversize rod and then friction welding them together . Wasn't sure about wheather Medium density and High density would be compatable, but with trial and error but i seem to have got around that .

Awesome! Well done! Send some to me to test! ;)

Just to ask, does/has anyone just used ABS piping without a cap?
-
• #346
ABS is beautiful to play with uncapped. It has a life of less than two weeks per haad though.

I think we are nearly ready to go into production , they seem to be pretty indestructible . I need to get hold of a load of pipe as there seems to be zero roadwork going on round here as our local council lost all its cash on the stock market . Might actually have to buy 25 metres on ebay !

Our court is like a cheese grater
I'll make a few more for you to test

they have other thicknesses also, but i think 8mm seems a good balance of strength and weight?
you would use a hole saw of both inner and outer diameter, creating 2 pieces, then welding them together, and finally weld that to the mallet head, so it would fit inside for strength
