Woo. 4 weeks of 5k runs so I upped it to 6k. Found out it is just the same, but longer (and slightly faster).
Will aim for steady increase (1k every 2 weeks) to get to 10k (with half term and holidays that's between Christmas and New Year) and then start thinking about some work to improve speed; hopefully I'll be down another 6kg by then.

Just got back into running after a 3 1/2 month hiatus, I'm terrified I'm going to injure myself again. Slow and steady...

Righto folks, am in the market for some new running shoes.
Having seen a physio (due to some running and riding related tendinits) and had a gait analysis at runner’s need, it appears that I need neutral shoes, even though I currently use Brooks Ravennas, which are for over-pronation.
I know it’s a really broad question, but, any recommendations on good sneaks? Anything that’s getting rave reviews at the moment, are on sale etc etc? I don’t really read up on running stuff and rarely venture into the running section of wiggle and the like so don’t know where to start at the moment.
Running is a secondary activity to riding for me, so I don’t really want to spend any more than about £70 if poss. I have narrow feet should that make a difference. I’m also planning on going back to runners need and trying some out.
Danke

the nike flyknit lunar 2's are worth a look if you can find them on sale. i trained up to and ran the marathon in the lunar 1's and they were very comfortable and by all accounts from people i run with the lunar 2's are much the same.
I also just got a pair of the flyknit racers for shorter distances and so far i really like them too.
check on sportsshoes.com (quidco cashback available) as they often have loads of discounted shoes. my saucony kinvaras came from there and were an absolute steal.

You're just going to get a list of shoes that people own and wear, or have had problems with.
Pick a colour that you like, with whatever support is recommended, within your budget, and run with them for a few tens of kilometres.
If they are comfortable, don't exacerbate your injury, then stick with the brand and model when you buy your next pair.

Weren't red shoes meant to be the fastest?

^Dis.
Why not ask the people in Runners Needs what they recommend, or what is a popular seller. Ask for 4/5 neutral shoes to be brought to you that are under £70, then ask to try each pair out for a quick jog around the block. That's what I did and ended up with Asics Gel pulse 4.
Or just go with the shoe which has the most wanky-techo name. In which case Mizuno Paradox is a good choice.

Just signed up on an 8-person team for next august's 24hr spitfire scramble race.
basically taking turns running 5.8 mile off road laps from midday to midday.

That looks nuts! Although a bit lonely maybe, you're entering as a team but don't get to run with them?
-
• #9767
^ spend 7 laps with 6 others either eating sleeping or cheering teammates on = social. If all run even pace & same laps that's 3hrs of running each.

I'd quite like to enter that bit of silliness.
Sounds fun. -

Went along to this talk by ultra/endurance athlete Tobias Mews about running ultras this evening.
http://run.runandbecome.com/event/london-ultra-running-beginners-guide/
was all pretty high-level topics but really interesting to hear from the mouth of someone who's done it. no ultras on the horizon for me just yet though.

Anyone got example (anec)data from losing weight and the effect it had on your running?
Right now I can run at a steady 10.5kph (5.40min/km) along the flat and my HR will sit around a comfortable 160bpm. This is me at ~88kg, I'm 5'8" so this is quite overweight. I'm on my way down to 76kg (and ideally 70kg but I will start with getting back to a BMI of 'Normal').
It's obvious that as the weight comes off my HR should be lower for the same workout (all other things being equal; weather, health, etc) but I know it's more likely that I'll end up running to the same perceived effort and going faster for the same or even slightly increased HR. (It doesn't get easier, you just get faster.)
I'm just looking for someone who's got HRM/GPS data from a time when they lost loads of weight who can say: "I used to do x min/km at y bpm and after losing z kg I can now do blah blah blah."

Not really. The correlation between your heart rate and your performance is fairly weak.
In terms of weight loss and performance, all other things remaining equal*, if you are lighter, you are moving less weight around, so you'll be faster. This does assume that there's no functional loss associated with the weight loss.
* Not that they ever would be equal - It would be pretty difficult to disassociate weight loss from other physiological gains and functional gains, and if you are using running to lose weight, I would suggest that the torturous stats needed to separate the two would make the results meaningless noise.
tl;dr Skinny is faster than fatty.

@Greenbank
Have a look at http://www.steveway.co.uk/ for some inspiration
Used to be a chainsmoking fattie, who started running and now holds the British veteran marathon record. He uploads his training plans and GPS logs of his runs if interested.

I've had a badly upset stomach after my last two runs (13km on Sunday; 8x800m intervals on Tuesday). I haven't experienced it before and I don't think I have changed anything in pre-run eating patterns. I may be eating too much bread. It's annoying.

download the excel spreadsheetat the top, plug in your details and there's a section on there that shows the potential gains in performance based on things like changing weight.
all based on the formulas in Daniels Running Formula book.
Dammit may have a stat gasm when he sees this.
@_Leon - You running The Stickler this Sunday? Over 1500ft of climbing!
