  • When I were a lad...

  • ^ Like it,

My 30th birthday celebration is a 6-2-1 session of bike, run, swim training. Which until reading that post I though was pretty hardcore!

I added the swim to my training plan as I'm hoping the day is a scorcher!

  • I spent my 30th trespassing on private property and then fucking KILLING IT during a game of Twister. That counts, right?

  • I did shout at the right person!

About the only one of me not looking like an idiot:

Lesson learned - Don't try to wave or make faces at the camera, the photos come out looking like this:

    WTF am I doing?

  • looks like you're gliding on a wave of positivity.

  • I did shout at the right person!

Haha, and you are the person that I thought you were! Sorry for ignoring your DAS - if that was at the end I was busy sniping at my poor brother. How he didn't push me in the river and be done with it I don't know.

  • No worries, I only just managed to wave at my girlfriend at that stage. Too focussed on getting over the line and ending the pain.

  • Did my first race for a while yesterday, the Rydal Round in the Lake District, part of Ambleside Sports: a very traditional Lakeland scene.

It was a good race with a lot of uphill at the start, a bit of ridge running round the middle and then a long downhill back to the start field. The uphill I did more walking than running but managed to make up for it by coming down pretty fast. Local knowledge is key as you could skirt round the very top of some of the peaks and go straight over the edge on the grass rather than following the path on the way down.

    Legs are feeling ok today.

On a side note I highly recommend The Sports Gene by David Epstein.

  • nice race pics, always tricky not to gurn mid effort.

I've learned this week it's simple to update my online training diary if I use Strava to record a session then upload the exported gpx file. I'm guessing other gps recorders on phone would give similar options without all the KOM stuff?

Really looking forward to my "A" race of the year in a couple of weekends time just hope I can arrive at the startline fit n healthy, cotton wool time.

  • Just signed up to a number of races over the next few months. Mainly 10k to Half Marathon distances, but I'm also intending to do a few more sprint triathlons (5k run). How should I train and maintain fitness for all 3 distances?

Is it as simple as a couple of shorter (5-10k) runs in the week, with a longer one on the weekend? Or just train for 5k and half and assume the 10k will be alright?

  • 1x Hill, 1x Tempo, 1x Long Run.

But thats how i train for everything....

  • Need some advice, I've had an ongoing shoulder muscle pain (well, the bit on top/behind the shoulder between the shoulder and neck if that makes sense) on my left side for a good couple of years now. It used to only happen if I ran with a pack or ran a particularly long distance but it seems now to crop up far more regularly. When it happens it makes it very painful to move my left shoulder (can run still, doesn't stop arm movement) and makes it very painful to turn my neck.

Obviously the sensible thing would be to go to a physio which I will when I can afford to, but in the interim does anyone have any suggestions on stretches/cures/remedies?

Edit: It also appears on long drives.

Ive done the C2C sunderland to whitehaven plus some Lakes Miles to get near Grizedale forest.15 kilos double panniers. Ace hills over the pennines , Hartside and all that some knarly places with bivvy and camping mix.5 days 160 milea.loved Ravenglass.but cycle touring is wank. Takes all the fun out of razzing it on bikes which is my bag.
    Day off bike today.

Good club the Doddlers. They have Sturminster half today. Stickler could be on, last day of BST same weekend of the OMM. Need to check O events will bear it in mind

  • Did the equivalent of a forum ride with RDC on saturday morning on the 2nd inaugural coffee run.

6 coffee shops each with coffee from a different roasters, mile to two miles between each one, drinking coffee at every stop.

excellent fun and interesting to see the effects that much caffeine has on a group of fairly able runners (we ended at somerset house for lunch and instead of crashing out over half of us decided to run back to where we started again)

  • oh and I threw my hat in the ring for the tokyo marathon in Feb, am waiting to hear back on that and london now to see if I'm running 1, 2 or 3 marathons early next year.

    Feb: Tokyo (tbd)
    Mar: Berlin 1/2 (confirmed)
    Apr: Paris (confirmed), London (tbd)

  • ^^ How did you not all shit yourselves? Six coffees + running = OMGWHERESTHETOILET

  • ^^ Bloody hell, did you sleep that night.

And following the questions upthread, I bought a (nother) camelbak, as the belts didn't feel right. End result was destroying a PB by about 30 minutes, and now can't walk. Seriously. Got up twice in the night to find myself on my arse. Apparently just because you feel better, doesn't mean it's any easier on the legs.

Cheers, tears. Will check that out.

  • Any summer chafage tips? Things are getting bad, particularly under the arms.

  • Vaseline. Water-based gets sweated off.

  • I bought some Body Glide, it's good - however I'm convinced the chafing just moves elsewhere. Short of covering myself entirely in the stuff I think I'm going to have to accept that I'm always going to have some sort of weeping sore.

  • Vaseline, and more importantly, kit that fits. Vaselining your feet before putting your socks on is a great way of avoiding blisters.

  • God. Pike o blisco today 7.8 k run with 400 metres climb.
To get to the start 400 metres climb, same at the end.
Double ankle sprain on my wasted (but always taped up) ankles.
    But.
I didnt give up! the place was stunning, massive distance views, crags and deep valleys, heaven on earth but now legs are twatted.
Tapped up the first aid for ice pack at end.
1 day to go and the 5 days and my destiny to the dark side of fell running will be complete.
