  • Having uploaded my run to garmin connect I'm quite liking the running dynamics stuff on the FR620. ultimately it's all a bit pointless but who doesn't like more stats to geek out over...

  • @kboy well done with the Strava Challenge always nice to get a PB in a race on something like that.

It's the first time I've done a challenge and only just missed out on my pb, but pleased that I'm currently within the the top 30%. Though I notice that the top runner 'Fatty (loves) Candy' had a 400+ m elevation loss and no ups at all on his run. I know the challenge is called AnyWay 10 k but even so ...

  • First snow run of the year yeaterday. It was pretty amazing. 3" of fresh snow underfoot, crisp cold air, and nice and dark. No sure why I love these conditions by they do make for an intense atmosphere. 1:00 for a 10k isnt ground breaking. But it was mostly offroad, and included a massive step climb.

  • :) ^^

    3/ 27
    7.8 km
    310 metres climb,
    open fell Mendip North,
    Forest,
    Craghopping,
    Scree running.
    fucking ace time.
    stoked.

    Sounds awesome!
I did the Boscombe 10k (46min) yesterday which sounds so boring in comparison to your event. Nearly puked my porrige over the track in the finishing 250m.
    Saw Helen got 1st Female.

  • ^ Off to sweden on saturday for two weeks. We'll be in the south, so hoping for snow is a bit wishful, but fingers crossed

  • I popped in to Runner’s Need yesterday and ended up having another gait assessment, where we discovered that my feet have stopped rolling in quite as much as before and I don’t need super orthopaedic shoes anymore. Win. Why is it such a win? Because have you SEEN what Saucony Omni’s look like? MY EYES. I ended up buying a pair of Brooks Vapor and then accidentally agreeing to do a duathlon. Argh.

Well done everyone on some nice running this weekend. I planned to go for a run yesterday but was super tired so had “a quick nap” and woke up nearly 5 hours later.

  • This week is running week, I really need to get out for a proper long run soon, I don't thing I've run over 10k since september!

Hatbeard, I'm on a phone but you route looks like its got a lot of zig-zags in is!

  • Crap run today, but just happy I did one.

yeah I ran up and down every side street sandwiched between two main roads. works out to almost 3 miles instead of about 1 and there's pretty much no traffic or main roads to cross and it's dead flat.

nice simple way to extend the route out without going too far from home.

  • Reminds me of this strava segment.

Tempted to give it a go sometime.

  • That looks fun.

Should I buy the new Garmin 220? Or maybe the 210? Or maybe the 610?
    Decisions...

  • the reviews of the new ones on dcrainmaker's blog (google it) are very thorough so would tell you if you need any of the new features on the 220.

  • Just checked my Garmin link above, and it has my altitude going down to -100ft. I was running along the coast, and have no memory of being that wet.

Does the 910xt need calibrating. My Bryton used but never worked. So I gave up.

  • Yeah, I've seen his blog. I quite fancy the new one, but is it worth the extra dorrah?

Bluetooth upload, the accelerometer cadence, super fast satellite finding and waterproofing are all good. I've just found out that the 210 doesn't do custom intervals, so that's a non-starter

    Meh

    Hmmm

910xt uses barometric altitude calculation - this can be affected by temperature changes (e.g. going inside / outside).

  • I'm happy that my 210 doesn't have custom intervals as it's a good excuse not to do any interval training.

  • I managed to convince myself earlier that my watch was broken - "there's NO WAY I can be running that slowly, it MUST be broken"

You know that scene in The Office when Gareth calls the calculator manufacturer to complain that the calculator is wrong? That's basically me.

  • 910xt uses barometric altitude calculation - this can be affected by temperature changes (e.g. going inside / outside).

Thats a big part of why I bought it. I considered combining an edge 510 + forerunner 210 (or something). As I'm not much of a swimmer. Which would have meant bigger screen for bike, smaller unit for running. But running in the mountain makes me want good altitude data.

The gradients, and elevation gains are the important bits. Its just annoying.

  • I'm happy that my 210 doesn't have custom intervals as it's a good excuse not to do any interval training.

Intervals make you faster and are therefore non-negotiable. The programmed intervals mean you cannot steal an extra few seconds recovery. You are compelled by the beeps to run until you boak. Which is excellent fun.

  • I particularly like the beeps that tell you to speed up.

    Cunts.

  • My old polar used to beep constantly, whenever it felt my HR was too high for my age. Combined with the red face. It gave the impression that I was having some kind of medical episode.

TW2 probably remembers it going off 10 seconds into the Dalsnibbe run, and not stopping untill I turned the fecking thing off.

  • after my run yesterday my watch told me not to run again until weds night.

  • I've been looking at various HRmax calcs, as well as zone calcs. Come up with this based on comparing the various results with feeling.

    Max HR - 181

Zone 5 - 168-181 - Head rolling around, trying desperatly to learn to pull in extra oxygen through my ears.
    Speed (anaerobic)

Zone 4 - 156-168 - Giving it the beans, in a sustainable manner.
    Economy (anaerobic)

    Zone 3 - 144-156 - My happy place.
    Stamina (aerobic)

    Zone 2 - 132 - 144 - meh.
    Endurance (aerobic)

    Zone 1 - 120-132 - Tying my shoe laces.
    Recovery (aerobic)

  • Anyone here ever used the hansons marathon method to train for a marathon?

am quite intrigued by the idea but not entirely sure it would be suitable for a first-timer. but now I feel like I have rekindled my love of running I've kind of come to the decision that I want to take my marathon training as serious as possible rather than just pick any old training plan and try to drag myself across the finish line so I'm exploring all my options.

my missus gets 50% off books as she works in waterstones marketing dept so have asked her to buy me that and daniels running formula so I can have a read up before I have to start training in earnest.
