  • Gaffa tape them to your thighs

  • I've got a tri race belt with gel slots - you can put your number on it too.

You're more than welcome to borrow it if you want?

Would that be ok? Do many people wear them during marathons?

  • Gaffa tape them to your thighs

A similar thought had crossed my mind.

  • All tri hards do. I wore it for dorney.

    Makes you look a tool,...

get your supporters who worship you to hand them over at strategic places on the route- also gets some reward spots in the head, caffeine gels only

  • Massively risky that ^

Support is ace but its so east to miss one, and whilst you'll get through the marathon without it, it won't help you mentally if you're countering away at missing a handover or worrying about finding someone

  • its not London though is it? shouldnt be impossible

  • Or sparky nike do shorts with a zip pocket in the back you could get 2 or 3 in there.

Either way, just dug it out, it'll hold 3 gels

  • I've just looked at the route and there are a few spots with isotonic drinks and fruit, so I'm thinking I'll carry 3-4 gels with me. Does that sound about right? Would I be able to pick up the belt tomorrow?

  • yeah good shout too^^ and get 3 down your neck before the start

  • My shorts have a little non-zip pocket in the back, but that's where I pop my Garmin Edge 200 because I don't have a watch.

    Three gels at the start?!

  • take three blister plasters as well

  • I really hope they take you up and round parc Guell and all that for the views

  • Yes of course sparky, it's in my bag now - I'll drop you a pm.

What have you done with gels in training - try to replicate that.

That's good of you, cheers. I'll PM back.

I've only used gels running once, at Dorney. I did one a lap there. Was thinking of doing one at each 5km at the water station, but that's a lot of gels. So maybe I'll do one at the start, one at 10km, one at 20km and one at 30km. No real rationale, just because. Happy to hear advice though.

  • Manufacturers seem to recommend one every 30 minutes - I don't get on with gels so I don't use them.

I either eat 1 nakd bar per hour or jam sandwiches.

At dorney I split a nakd bar in 3 and had a bit on each lap.

  • It was the 30 min claim that made me think of doing one every 5km - but it seems like a lot, both to carry, and to eat.

  • I should probably have put more thought into this, but it's the first one: if I survive and finish, and learn a few lessons, I'll be happy.

Seems like a lot to me...

So maybe I'll do one at the start, one at 10km, one at 20km and one at 30km.

    I'd do this.

Rumour has it (on my club's FB page) that they pass out lucozade cargo gels at miles 14 (22km) and 21 (34km). My shorts have a small pocket on either side that fits one gel (sis go gel) perfectly or 2 if you're happy to risk loosing one occasionally. If it were me I'd carry 2 gels and eat one at 10km, then use the two on the course, and have one as backup in case you need it.

They'll also be handing out lucozade on course so a sip of that at each aid station should keep you topped up.

  • I wear a cycling top when I run and so have the back pockets.

  • I hope you lot managed a few sunny miles today. I went for the first run for a few weeks as i've been ill AGAIN. It was lovely.

  • 5.5 miles home, missed most of the sun sadly, but despite feeling knackered took 42 minutes, pretty pleased.

Race belt handed to Sparky, good luck for the weekend!

Just the long run to manage but have annoyingly left my gloves and tights at the office and I'm not de to go in tomorrow.

Will have to wing it, hopefully the weather will be good!

  • Thanks Ed, for the belt and the advice. It's good to be nervous about things sometimes, in the right circumstances.
