  • Jim1985, I have done what you are doing now. Going from a slight heel strike to now landing more on the ball of my foot, with just my heels 'touching' the ground. It takes a while to get used to get worth it. I ache far less now after longer runs and recover much quicker. For road running, I wear Brooks Green Silence and for trails I wear New Balance MT110. Both of these can be picked up for about £30 online so if they don't suit they can be used for casual shoes.

  • ^ That's good to hear, I'll keep working on it. Feel like my current stride is ruining me a bit. Just recently got some new trainers, but will keep your suggestions in mind given they're only £30

  • Anyone got any thoughts on the merrell barefoot shoe? Switched a few months ago and other than initial terrible cramp in my calves over 3k I'm loving them. Haven't done over 10k in them thought yet (this is mostly running machine based though)

  • Calf cramp can be from trying too hard to stay on the front of the foot (point is to land on the ball of the foot first, not to keep the heel off the ground). But the treadmill really isn't going to teach you how the shoe works for you; get out on the road.

  • Treadmill Tip;

Always stick it on incline. Makes it biomechanically more similar to real running and more effective as a training tool.
Also be aware that treadmills have built in suspension; outdoor paving will be less forgiving!

Cramp maybe something non technique related also, like hydration and minerals.

  • When I was doing a lot of treadmill work, I used to stick it on a random cycle so that the elevation would vary over time. Only way I stayed awake.

My last night event of the season later.

  • Today was The 20 Miler training run.

I'm numb from the hips down.

  • Running this after watching the Milian - San Remo next weekend
Its referred to as the Monaco Marathon but being a small place its only 23.8 kms

    The profile looks interesting..

  • 10/18 yesterday on the night event
5/11 on todays 5.7 middle distance race=9.2 min per k
5/49 in age class for S/W over soon to end season
    love stats.
even though the car said 2 degrees the biting wind felt lot colder today.
roast scoff never went down so good.

yeah you bet, and an average age of 7000

  • 18.6km on a treadmill tonight, watching Volcano. That's it now - no more running before Barcelona marathon on Sunday. I am woefully underprepared, so finishing is the goal. Wish me luck.

  • I assume you are going to other forms of exercise this week because sevendays taper is way to long.

And if you can watch/enjoy movies while you run on a treadmill.. you either have perfect balance and vision or aren't running anywhere near fast enough.

Having said that.. best of Luck!

Hang on a sec - Are we getting sartorial commentary from KL now?

  • Good luck Sparky, I'd say try and get a few gentle jogs in this week to keep th legs ticking over, 3km at race pace would be fine, but it'll stop your legs feeling dead on the day.

Surely the only good thing about treadmills is being able to watch tv no? Surely if you can focus on a screen you must have terrible balance/coordination. Admitedly at 20kph it starts getting hard to do anything other trhan put one foot in front of the other!

I fell out of love with running last week so decided I wasn't even going to bother. Feel a bit more into it this week, but I think I need to read born to run again or I won't get round thuis marathon, let alone in target time...

  • 8miles in the bin last night. getting back into it after >3 weeks off due to shin splint.
some people said it was snowing outside. i didn't see the snow or feel the cold.
i just know what needs to be done so get on with it while joe slacker stays indoors.

  • [QUOTE=AirTime;3469727i just know what needs to be done so get on with it while joanna slacker stays indoors.[/QUOTE]

I am Joanna Slacker and I'll get out there this evening shameface.

  • Snow run last night. I've cut down on my food very slightly. Got home starving and ate a box of alpen.

  • ^ counter productive no?

Run home and run in were great, will run home tonight and then run in tomorrow, followed by a run home on thursday and I will get out this weekend and put in at least 20 miles, seem to have lost my favourite running shorts so need to buy a new pair this week, can't remember whether thay were 5 or 7 in shorts though so going to have to take a punt.

I got given a vouvher for a sports massage so going to book that in for monday as a reward as well to hopefully guilt me into getting out this weekend!

  • Ran my second 10 mile race of the year on Sunday. Managed a bit better this time despite the cold and got round in 71:03, which is around 9 minutes quicker than this race last year. Strangely, I enjoyed it pretty much all the way round even though it was mostly pretty painful. I think the nice course helped and managing to stay ahead of planned pace was a constant boost. Sub 70 is the obvious target for the next one in May, though i'll be concentrating on short fast stuff for the next two weeks for a 10k on the 24th. Fun fun fun!

  • well done

  • meh.. not the best run before the monaco half but it did start snowing halfway around

  • I need to carry some gels on the marathon but don't really want to buy or wear a bumbag type thing. Any ideas? Clench them in my teeth? My bum cheeks? Balance them on my head?
