20k on a shit day, that's quite something

It's weird - I don't really think twice about knocking out 20k / 25k any more - I supposed that it's all about building up to it & making that sort of distance a habit.
As I get closed to marathon time, I'll be putting in some longer stuff to get my legs* and hips, more worryingly, used to the distance, as they're what are holding me back.
- Last weekend I still had the century ride from the day before in my legs, and I was feeling a bit precious.
Malta half this weekend. Downhill all the way, in the sun. See if I can't know out a 1:35 (which is about a 1:40 in flat money).

^ it's funny isn't it how over time and with experience distances become less intimidating, haven't really cracked 30km yet as an easy run, but hopefully in a few weeks I'll be there, for me now it's just about running for 3 hours every Saturday and just getting gradually faster, so something over 30 this weekend, eventually up to 35 or 36!

Thinking about it - I'm nowhere near your level, but doing 10k last sunday on a few spoons of yoghurt and a hangover is quite a difference to where I was a year ago, having just a done a few 10k's at all.

Anyone do the Southerns at Parly Hill at the weekend? Didn't fancy just the 15km thrash , so ran there from home (prob 22-23km) and then did the race. Utterly ridiculous mud, shin deep a lot of the way - great fun, and doing it at the end of a longish run made it a great strength builder, felt good. Even if you're not going race-pace, having other guys around you racing keeps you honest.
Was v pissed off when they postponed it last month due to the snow, but the mud was probably even more fun. Really silly decision to postpone, however, as we've destroyed the Heath for the locals.

Cheers Sainsburys Ed. Definitely caught the bug.
Casual 30ks? You're all very impressive. Time to get working up to it :)

I can manage 15 miles / 25k on a Sunday no bother, but more than a mile or two extra starts to require effort at a rapidly increasing rate. I think I'm just not cut out for the marathon or longer.

Have you got any food or drink with you on that run?
You're basically running on fumes at that point and need to replenish to keep going. That's probably all thats holding you back -

Oh I always stop and buy a lucozade or similar. Sometimes twice. It's not fuelling: I know what that feels like. It's just my legs get really tired at 17 miles.

Thats always a bit of a hurdle for me. Longer runs requires timing food and fluid intake. Plus I'm running on a serious sleep deposite of late. I seem to get a nice high, and wake up at 2k, then die again at 10k.
Added sprint intervals to my run last night. In prep for a 7s rugby tournament. I fecking hate intervals. I'm old, the body wants to cruise.

I hear that! In fact, the body wants to sleep from October to end March then awaken to run in warmer temps. I really struggle to get out there on dark evenings but, sometimes, the information on the bathroom scales helps to motivate me sigh.
Aiming for a short session around Clapham Common this evening.

Surely the Heath will have recovered by next XC season? Good run.

Feeling really tired after 2 8k runs yesterday think I went a bit hard as both were around 35 minutes...
10k today and tomorrow and then some laps of Richmond park on saturday - unless I need to go househunting again :(
Next week my 10ks become 12ks so I need to keep getting fater or it'll take forever to get to work!

While you're at it, I would value any advice about taping up a shoulder with an AC disruption; cycling with it is easy but running is going to shake it about a b it. Also how best to modify breathing technique to cope with a fractured rib. Going to run, no question about it, only issue is how.

Go to a physio to have it taped up properly?

Doesn't sound very Ironman. You have a good point, but if s/he tells me no, I'll just be coming back for the kind of bad advice that only the forum can offer.

but if s/he tells me no
Don't let them... Maybe I've just had good luck picking physios (and even docs when I need drugs) but I always begin the discussion with "I'm going to do this race whether you like it or not... I'm paying you to help me achieve this or at least to minimise any damage I might do to myself in the process".
Of course this is massively dependent on the injury/race you have in mind, but for my first IM, after a year of specific training and that bloody-huge-non-refundable-entryfee, nothing was going to keep me off the start line!

That's quite a punishing schedule - what is your plan up to race day?

As I rode in this morning I saw crack smoker running down Essex Road in a vest and shorts. I know that you get pretty hot when you're running compared to cycling, but that was just lunacy...
-
• #4898
jim1985 you've never seen club runners then?

Don't start KL on the acceptable weather to wear anything more than shorts and leggings!!

might do parkrun in a.m, you in pifko?
Ah.... Still basically a half marathon!
