Definitely. Having not cycled since 3 months ago I decided to dust off the bike on New Years Day. It was cold, there were endless bank holiday queues of cars and it was a bit boring. Not to mention faffing about with clothes/equipment/maintenance. Fuck it.
I agree with this sentiment - it's partly what made me start running again when I was studying and had hardly any free time. New Year resolution is to get back on the bike and start using it for other than my commute though.
And Pifko - you're probably right about doing too many miles for a newbie, my body probably isn't used to the pounding yet. Thing is, my heart / lungs / legs can manage it at the time so I find it hard to hold back!

Any recommendations for a training program to get me running longer distances?
Just getting back into it, 5k is fine for me but would love to do a half marathon later in the year.
Currently do an hour of circuit training 6 days a week so don't really have that much time to dedicate to running and don't want to over stretch myself. Not overly bothered about getting fast, just going further.
Managed about 12k in one hit last year shortly after first starting to run but it knackered me for a week! -

Stick with the 10% rule (i.e. increase your weekly distance by at most 10% each week) and you should be ok, I would have thought.

Sounds sensible and obvious!
I do my circuit training in the afternoon so should be able to squeeze a short run in most mornings.
Time for a spreadsheet methinks. -

New shoes! New shoes!
(in other words: I just took the trainers I got for Christmas out for their first proper run. It was meant to be a 'urgh dragging myself out for a short run because I was too lazy to do an afterworker ride' run but turned into a 'holy crap new shoes are amazing' 10 mile bound around south east London to Crystal Palace and back. I can't believe it's taken me three years to experience new shoe joy.)

Speaking of - think its time for me to get a new pair as well. Is it worth going to the shops and get tested again or just get the same pair again? Gone from no running at all to 7-10k once a week, sometimes a bit more, in about 18 months.

I dropped some very heavy handed hints to my mother that I'd like some trainers that were very similar to the ones I had already, but were half price on Wiggle. (Sorry, that's probably not terribly helpful; though if you've found ones that work well sticking with what you know seems to make sense.)
I am so buoyed by my running experience tonight I'm going to sign up for the 16 mile Breakfast Run. I even had a stupid grin on my face running up College Rd.

Got a blister on my inner right arch though. Went to the gym this morning, night off tonight and see how it is tomorrow. Will try the loop the other way round.

@j.m.f. Am I right that a lot of the stuff you do is orienteering? If so do you have any info on good resources and race events etc? I'm now back in the UK and based in Oxford for the foreseeable future - I've never tried orienteering but it looks like a blast. (I'll try some googling later but just wondering if you had any good places to start looking?).

Excellent, thank you. I noticed some controls up on Shotover hill a while ago but doesn't look like there are any events there any time soon. Still, I'll keep my eye out.
Out of interest how long are the races usually? From what I read, 7.5km might be considered long... How is that measured? As the crow flies? Also how long would a decent runner expect to take - presumably a lot of time can be wasted fannying about trying to find the damned flag. Personally, my interest increases with distance (up to a point) so would love to find events that were a jolly 20-40km. I guess they aren't that common unless I start looking at "OMM" type events?

yeah,
youve noticed Im into blue length in the main,
this tells you how the colour coded courses fit together and some morehttp://www.britishorienteering.org.uk/page/newcomers_guide
The longer 2 day events like the OMM have less nav over a longer distance but they are best done with a bit of map confidence for sure, if you find any that look interesting post em up may have done them/ same area.
(we geeks all keep our maps...) -

My first run of the new year. 46.48 for an 8k around Lloyd Park, Croydon. I'm surprisingly shattered!
More running, less cycling...........
Surprised at the level of support for that, here. I find riding fixed complements running well - high cadence good for both.

It's a very achievable target; I've done it (literally) barefoot. Just build up to it at your own pace.

At this time of year I struggle to get out there and run, especially when it's dark and/or cold during the week. Biking to/from work helps but running is more intensive for me and that's suffered as a result. I ride SS but try to incorporate sprint sections on a clear stretch when it's safe to do so.
Roll on March. I'll feel better then :-).
