  • just found out I destroyed most of the cartilage in my knee after mashing my ACL at the beginning of march (had continual pain since). the ironic thing is I was in the process of getting fitter to do more sports and had just started to do running and even bought a fancy pair of kicks.

But my knees fucked now, cartilage apparently does not grow back. Cant stand or walk for extended periods, or neither do nothing at all because it locks up. Luckily can still ride in comfort.

  • yeah, 35.25 , happy to get around, seeing on minimalist training due to stupid fatigue thing. nice weather, pity got all nazi like with officials.

    68.48 for half, 31 10k, 14.48 5k

I could never run that quick (respect to dogsballs).. my PBs
    4hr20mins (42K) 96mins (21K), 48mins (10K), 32mins (5K)
I will run again upto 10K only though, cross country / fell running only..

  • i've run with clubs for a long time and do a lot of running.

but as long as you are out there and enjoying it and doing pb's once in a while, kudos to you.

  • entered the first ever brighton full marathon today in april next year, looking forward to it

that must be quite a hilly course...

I'm looking to run a marathon in october in 3:15 (hopefully) ...
I suppose I will have to to some track training for this. So far I managed without but 'only' (was quite pleased) got to 3:35 in Hastings last december.

  • Dale what % increase did you get with training?

I've never trained but have done 42 and 43 min 10k. (My now annual 10k run) Be curious if I put in some effort if I could get much below 40, but that would actually require doing some running.

  • Everyone, I beasted myself in the garage until i vomited this evening. Nitro.

i roasted my guns in tribute when i read this..Nitro!

  • currently only 40-50 miles ~34mins normal flat 10k, 80-100 miles ~31min 10k.

if you can do 42 with no training, easy sub 40 with 2-3 easy runs and maybe one longer run a week. there are some very ungainly guys i run with who do 37 mins or even 1.17 for a half.

  • Did anyone run the 10K yesterday....? I had a blinder

  • Did anyone run the 10K yesterday....? I had a blinder

    no but well done!

my progress has been more modest but i can now make it round the "big" block incorporating a lap of the park without seeing stars, cramping up, or stopping to walk. go me. thanks me. i'm welcome. x

  • I'm working on keeping a steady pace at the moment. Current bests are:

    1.5 mile = 09.47 minutes
    3 mile = 21.07 minutes
    6 mile = 45.24 minutes

I know they're no completely uniform but it'sgetting there. I find listening to Marine Corps cadences are helping me keep my rhythm up.

On a side note I was up at an army regiment the other day and there was a late commissioned officer, ex SAS, 47 years old, and his current marathon time was 2 hours 38 minutes. Pretty amazing really!

  • Chug_It, thats decent mate. A 45 minute 10k is very respectable. If you are interested in improving your times, then don't forget to mix up your training with some speed work and some hill work!! It takes the boredom out if training too!
    Nice one

  • Cheers buddy, I'm in dire need of some hills as Cambridgeshire is as flat as a billiards table. Heading over to Brecon for the Fan Dance in August so that will be fun.. not. I am trying to vary it up as much as possible though.

Currently I'm doing some pitch sprint work to get the initial mile and half down, and I incorporate sweatsuit and weighted load work too.. music is my saviour though, without it I'd fully stop haha!

  • :) I know that feeling mate.

Ive had this happen in both knees, (years of football) all it takes to sort it is key hole surgery. Your doc sets it up, couple of months wait, in and out in half a day, two weeks rest, good as new.

  • Right, I was doing a 10k training run last night and was on my way to improve my PB but then at 7km I got terrible stitch and had to slow down a lot.

    Was that because I

    a) started to fast
    b) had a few too many pints at Easts on Wednesday?

  • I've ditched the bike for the commute and I'm now running every day to and from work.

It's f-king killing me. I'm really not used to the weight on my back but it's day three and I'm feeling slightly easier with it all; I guess it's more mental than anything but I'm getting it done. Get to work, whores bath, get my gear on, go and kick arse and then do it all again on the evening.

It's pouring down in Cambridge today and running along the river side into town whilst getting soaked to the skin felt amazing. Fleetwood Mac is currently my musical saviour!

  • I'd not run for a while. Mal and I went out tonight. My quads are now fucked. That is all.

  • Can't be arsed with reading three pages but run & become in Victoria is a great running shop.

    2p.

  • Found out my injury wasnt really acl but a mixture of tearing probably mostly on the meniscus. It was har dfor them to tell because I got scanned 4 months late and it had quite luckily started to heal itself.

But I do have missing cartilage which is unusual for a 25 year old (wonder if its because of cycling?)

The only thing physio was able to recommend is balancing thigh muscles to improve tracking to help it heal better. Ive been training it fanatically and have built up a nice bulge of muscle on the inner thigh where i had non before. Knee is still sore often and somewhat unstable but is definetely improving.

Im actually quite looking forward to seeing how fast I can run with all this new muscle power.

  • Kental Coastal Marathon last Sunday, 03:26:56 (39/236). 56 minutes quicker than my pathetic effort back in FLM2009 and 10 minutes quicker than my PB from 2004. At halfway (01:39) I was pretty sure I had it in the bag, tagged onto 2 fellas who came past me and stayed with them to 22.5 miles, Chariots of Fire were Us. Then I finally cramped and resorted to my usual straight-legged-shuffle-cramp-shuffle-wee-shuffle-curse-cry-laugh etc, etc all the way home, my kids jogging the last 1/4 mile with me. I still have quite a stupid smile on my face. I never thought I'd crack the 3:30 mark. If I can sort out the cramp issues I could probably, maybe, just scrape a sub-3:20(!?).

Next up is Brighton 18th April, and I've also entered London again....if I get in I'm doing both. So to see how it might feel I trotted off yesterday (1 week after marathon, legs still quite tight) for my usual 13.1 miles around Richmond Park. Miles 10 onwards were hellish. I cannot imagine being able to get fit enough to do 2 marathons a week back-to-back. But what the hell.

Oddly, once I'd got my leg over the bike, cycling was a breeze, especially fixed...spinning seemed to ease my soreness, whereas freewheeling did little for it at all.

  • went out for a trot yesterday (been badly neglecting the running) and realised that i need to pull my finger out.
did 5.4km at a pace that once would've been a doddle for a 15km run, and it wasn't easy enough.
tihnk it's going to be a winter of running (prefer running to cycling when the weather is shiteful).

  • I find that running is so tough as far as straight cardio goes. You can be plotting along, and the minute you make slightly more effort, or encounter a slight grade, you're huffing. I've been running 3-6 times a week now for the past 5 months, and I absolutely love it.

technical things i focus on when running.

-rhythm and consistency. first and foremost. I try to run up hills with the same rhythm as i run flats.
-i focus on landing toe first, and trying to run as quietly as possible.
-I give myself 5 minutes of trotting along before starting a bounding rhythm.
-I do not relax my arms and hands.
-standing up straight. looking relatively far down the road.
    -keeping my face calm.

just some things... running is where it's at. so excited for winter runs.

  • I started running about 6 weeks ago after doing pretty much no proper exercise for a getting on a ten years. First time out doing a mile and a half I was completely bollocksed. I've been building up slowly, did my first 7 miles today in 68 minutes, very slow compared to most of you lot but I was fairly pleased. Finding myself getting a couple of injuries though, my hips feel sore most of the time when I'm running and I sometimes get a sharp pain on the outside of my knee (ligaments?) but I put this down, well maybe the first to drinking too much and my poor running technique.

  • i'm in for the brighton marathon as well, should be a goodie taking it easy for the next few weeks training in earnest once I've been on holiday

  • i should start running again this autumn, which is the best season i reckon.. especially through the parklands of london.. not sure i am ready to commit to another marathon..
