Only reason I ask (and bear in mind I'm going that far in my training) is the damage the going that far does to your muscles takes a while to recover from.
Although oestrogen apparently limits this type of damage (according to the sunday times mag!)

i think i'm going to loose a toe nail....
has this happened to anyone else due to running and is the pain worse than death?
-
• #2354
also has anyone done any cani-cross?
seriously close to getting a beagle, would be great to be able to do as sport together

now youre a proper runner.my gfs toes are seriously scary last count 3 fucked nails.
sounds like a plan TB-not too heavy a schedule good luck with it.
average day today 46 mins to do a 6.4 k orienteering.went off too fast again without getting head set for nav, but im blaming result on lack of pre race caffeine gel.

are you having a giraffe? -

hey. so you all (probably know) I am NOT a runner.. nor could I ever be
BUT
I'm really interested in making a wee game out of running / cycling and narrow boating on the canals this summer. What do you lot think of my chances of finding a group of runners or a club to pair with? Does anyone know a club that I'd be able to approach? -

Was being serious it looks like a great activity to do with a dog that's bread to run, its not like a beagle would be any good at obedience classes anyway!
And the harnesses they use look much better than running with a lead for both dog and runner or dealing with a Fenton situation ;)

I don't have a dog of my own at the moment but every time I'm out running I think how lovely it would be to have a dog along. Sadly none of my parents' collies could be trusted to stay away from livestock and the flatcoat is just lazy.

there are lots of owners who'd be thrilled to have someone run / exercise their dogs

There is nothing better than an early morning run with your dog in the pissing rain.
This morning was perfect.
Towpath empty, dog trotting alongside, occasionally jumping into the river, 7k done without too much trouble.
I think I've found my ideal training partner, and its a dog.I miss my dog something terrible when I'm up in Nottingham.
He's getting a bit old though, went on our standard run over the christmas break, and he struggled a bit. -

Ha yep my big toe is on its way out :( I thought it may be the fit of my shoes but like you say i reckon its due to the running .
And the others are feeling rather sore like they are bruised -
• #2363
I thought the accepted shoe size wisdom was one that left a thumb-width gap between toe and shoe? I've never lost a toenail but have bruised them in years gone by. Blisters love me though.
I'm supposed to be training for the Fleet half in March, but am struggling with a hip problem (old injury) and winter blues. Physio next week will help. In the meantime 'ouch' and 'more chocolate/sleep please'.

I think eventually after a certain amount of pounding toe nails just decide to bail.
I'm at about 70 miles for the year so far so (althoiugh not as much as some people's) my feet are getting a lot of pounding.
Hopefully it'll grow back stronger and wiser.
In my experience blisters are a result of not good enough socks. but then again some people (usually me) have feet made of softer stuff than others.

I usually lose one or two toenails at IM events, but weirdly never in a standalone marathon.
Since ramping up the mileage after IMAT (July) the 2nd toe on my left foot grew back, fell off again and has since failed to grow back at all; the 2nd toe on my right foot has been continuously black and appears to have stopped growing but, for the time being, is still attached.
When they get a blister underneath my usual strategy it to tape everything together and hope the nail sticks back on - it usually comes off a couple of months later but by then the exposed area is no longer raw and much less painful.
For socks I now wear ininji toe socks (liner weight) underneath wrightsock anti blister socks. I got the combination from here and think it works really well.

Are you humankind?

You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to knightlancer again.
For what it's worth, as of this evening I'm down to just 8 toenails.

You lot are making me gag.
-
• #2369
People who lose toenails should keep there shoes on and their mouths shut. It freaks me out a bit. When i was away over Hogmanay with my running club, there were a couple of ultra runners waving their defprmed stumps about; it gave me the boke a bit. shudder

Was it on here that SmallFurry was talking about the seam of a pair of tights cutting his leg from arse to foot during a long distance run? You all need to learn the art of lounging about at home - it's less harmful in the short term (more harmful in long term, admittedly).

Lol!
I can't imagine 22 at the weekend is going to help.
I have decided I want to do the classic quarter ultra, the only problem is that its over a weekend that I'm due to be on holiday with some friends, does anyone else know of a sub 50ish trail ultra in the south of england this summer?

@ ewanmac - That link you posted was very useful. I might be able to reduce my high stock of Compeed. Now if you could just replace my left hip and give me a new set of lungs I should be fine :-).

Stopped running recently. No idea why to be honest. I just didn't run for a week and now It's been almost 3. Don't know what's wrong with me.
Perhaps I'll go out for a run tonight and try to get back in the zone.

10km in 34 degrees.
Not fun.
Cool, maybe I will ditch the run to work and chuck myself up College Rd a few times instead.
I dunno re 24, I guess I wanted to make sure I could get that far before I have to do it on marathonday, but maybe it is a bit unnecessary. I am a bit hopeless at sticking to stuff like this so I probably won't get that far anyway.
