did 5.5k yesterday 18.20, getting back slowly
-
• #228
Ok, so you started at 18.20, but what time did you finish?
-
• #229
running anything less than a 10 mile run is time wasted if your intention is to get fit.
But that my opinion, not fact. -

But that my opinion, not fact. Not really true, if you run shorter you can run faster.
Sprinters train in burst of 25metres or so at a time, and it certainly develops speed, power and overall fitness.
Plus even if you are aiming for full on endurance, you still maybe starting from a modest base (like me) being able to jog a mile at best.

But that my opinion, not fact.Cant say I agree with this.
Running more than a couple of miles frequently can have a massive effect on a persons fitness. Its the frequency that is the key.
If however you want to build strength then longer distances are the key, tis true.
I was training for the local marathon, which is in the beginning of may. Then I damaged a rib and cant run, so am trying to compensate by cycling alot. Not convinced its working TBH, might have to settle for the half marathon.

No new runner should head out and do 10mi.
You BUILD up your mileage over time allowing your body to adapt to the stresses you are putting on it.

so did anyone run today?
yep - saying anything less than 10miles is bullshit. everything i've ever read about running is that mixing stuff is good for injurys, health, enjoyment....etc
18.20 for 5.5k, is that quick? i only ever run ultra's - anything less is really a waste of time.

So I ran the marathon today in 4.02 and something. Not enough training because of a knee injury means I am absolutely shattered now though. It was one of the hardest, most painful experiences I've been through. I don't think I'm going to be able to use my legs for at least a couple of days. Once the pain goes away I'm sure I'll appreciate it a bit more. At the moment though I'm just saying to myself 'Never again!'.
I know some other guys were running today. How did you go? Kipsy, Mooks, any others?

nice work Lebowski.

• #236
well done chief very good time too

Nice one Andy. Good time too, especially considering your apparent lack of training!

but regularly running less than 10 miles is beating about the bush.
But ye, if your new, working up to it is the sensible way, proper way.My point was that up to 10miles, running seems easy, after that improvements are slow (in my experience) and the benefits hard earned, which is the kind of fitness i would rather have. Call me a bag of wind. Im full of it today.

Brother-in law did 3.08. He's quite pissed off. Was hoping to do under 3.

• #240
Nice work Lebowski.. what was it like out there? Usually it looks like carnage.

Cheers guys.
I saw some girl collapse around Canary Wharf. Two friends(?) picked her up and were trying to get her to keep going.
Then one guy completely passed out on the Embankment. Medics were rolling him over into the coma position. And another guy flat on his back just near the Houses of Parliament. I really felt for the guy cause he was less than a mile from the finish line. But he had probably been pushing himself for the last 10 miles and just couldn't make it.

i did my first track race for a couple years, a very rusty 9.32 3000m.

I knew I was in trouble when I realised I was in start gate 7......no way could I 8 minute/mile.....a solid wall of joggers in front.....and then it started to get hot too. I hit the halfway at 01:57 and kinda gave up struggling for a sub 4. By mile 22 I'd been on my feet way longer than I'd ever imagined.....and I was surprised to see that the race organisers had installed the GATES OF HELL at Blackfriars!! Shuffled in 04:21:31. Disappointed, but my position in the race reflects a slightly different story...started approx. 26000, finished 15700 ish, so worked my way thru the field a fair bit. It was pure absolute hell though for 4 miles, way, way worse than my previous 03:36:24 5 years ago. AND I did have to stop and WALK FFS! Never before have I been so exhausted - my running shoes felt like bricks. I too said NEVER AGAIN an awful lot....but entered the ballot the next day, and I've entered the Kent Coast on 6th September.
Thrilled to have actually done London, the atmosphere was terrific. My old right knee injury has vanished, I can still run, walk and cycle - which is a relief. AND I saw Peter Andre and Katie Price - wot more could I ask for. Annoyed that Ronan Keating beat me, but he is 15 years or so younger than me.Well done Lebowski - did the 'ONLY 385 yards to go' piss you off too?!

i swim and cycle (natch) quite a lot and recently decided to take up running too.
went for my first run since i was in junior school saturday, a very tentative a sedate jog of about 3k with lots of stopping to walk. felt fine afterwards but was very sore the next day and am in agony today. my quads are on fire. how do you stretch your quads?
-
• #247
Squats may stretch them a bit, otherwise lift your leg up so your ankle is near your bum, hold your ankle with your hand (right ankle, right hand) and then gently pull your ankle up - you can also gently ease your knee backwards too.
A picture is probably worth 1,000 words.

I'm loving my regime at the minute. Did a 10 week camp for a big fitness test last weekend (I smashed it to pieces) and took last week off as a 'treat' and a well needed recovery session.
Had my first beer since April 4th, had my first chinese since the same date, lived like a slob all week doing nothing regards exercise; I go for a 3 mile ease-back-into-it run this morning and breezed through it. So chuffed, I thought I was going to be in pieces!
Waiting on some dates for another test which should be in about 12 weeks time but I'm thinking of an 8 week camp this time around. By week 8 of Camp 1 I felt as if I was peaking and the last two felt as if I was overtraining, so an 8 weeker it is.
Running in a sweatsuit worked a treat also, kept me on weight and made runs without it a lot faster. I've also been experimenting with YouTube - Wanderlei Silva All Access Snorkel Training
this time around, anyone else into it? Felt awkard to begin with but I'm loving throwing it into my conditiong sessions; makes it so much harder but so much more rewarding. -

he'd be easy to beat in a fight. just put your hand over his snorkel hole.
thanks for the pic supersonic. i went for a swim after work as usual, rode home slowly then went for another short trot round the block followed by some extremely painful lunges and stretches as shown in the pic.
if you're a total novice like me would you recomend running every day though the pain of muscles unacustomed to it or resting for a day or two before getting back on it? when i say total novice i really do mean that the two miniscule runs i've done this week are the only two times i've willingly run in my adult life... apart from the time i drunkenly ran round the dog track at brighton and got thrown out of my friend's wedding reception.

I'm no expert, but I don't train any muscles that are aching and in recovery.
Let them recover first, then go out and push them again.
The way to improve with running, is to do long slow runs to get your endurance up and your cardio system sorted first. Tehn you can start doing shorter speed runs later.
Kingston Breakfast Run 16 miler = 02:05:15, much quicker than I'd hoped as I've something in my chest that no amount of coughing and spluttering will shift. It was glorious though! Commuted with gears today though, as legs are just a little weary.
