  • if you have manky shoes, take them out for a run in the snow.

i wore my 9 year old Walsh PBs today, the studs are really worn down but they are admirable in snow and ice. There was only one ropey moment on a tight right hand corner.

  • nice little run along the canal this evening. picked up the pace a bit to try and keep warm. it's definitely trail shoe conditions.

  • not going to bother with a bag drop, just gonna go straight home afterwards.

  • Hyper-extended my knee today kicking a clod of mud off my shoe right at the end of the run. Very annoyed as it’s beginning to really smart. RICE and lay off it for a few days I guess...? :(

  • Nike Lunarglides: not for ice. Managed to just about stay upright tonight.

  • @5awyr Were you running on the roads or pavements? Lethal outside ours on Mill View Road, nutter.

  • Both. Didn't fancy it to be honest, took it very steady and did quite a lot of laps of the cricket pitches to stay off it.

  • The only sketchy patch on today's run was a downhill section on the way to the gym treadmill, so I broke into a walk. 35 mins on the treddy incl. 22 mins @ 17.6kph = 4 miles @ 5:30/m (~HMP), a final mini-tempo run pre-Bath. Snowmageddon may prevent me actually getting to Bath when I was planning to but fingers crossed, should be OK by Sunday.

  • Speedcross have been great for 2 icey runs.

Trafford 10k cancelled. Gives me chance to get fitter for it now!

  • the runthrough 5k i was supposed to be doing on Saturday morning has also been cancelled. Most parkruns are looking unlikely round here as well.

  • I could Google but prefer the LFGSS hive mind. After how many miles should I get a new pair of running shoes?

  • Sounds flippant answer is depends on when they wear out. If they hurt to run in and are falling apart defo replace.

  • Spent £7 for slower bus/tram journey home than too work, still had to run last bit. Running both ways tomorrow I guess...

  • Are there any good treadmill training plans?

  • Yeah, they’ve invented this ‘replace after x miles’ thing to get you to buy a new pair every few weeks.

  • Talking of Speedcross and shoe fatigue, mine have about 350 muddy KMs and a couple of holes have appeared. I find them comfortable and I guess the water can escape better now, anyone else had them let go on the creases?

  • Manufacturer's answer: 200-300 miles for race shoes; 500 miles for training shoes.

In reality, all sorts of variables including how heavy/heavy-footed a runner you are, which shoes, how hard-wearing the outsole/midsole cushioning... My preference is to keep wearing a pair of shoes if there is still some rubber on the outsole and you're not running on midsole foam, and the shoes aren't otherwise falling apart. That's usually 1200 -1500 miles and has applied to different models from Nike, Adidas and Brooks. I've currently got two pairs of Adidas Glide Boost on the go, one at 1400 miles I now just use for easy runs on grass, the newer ones (400 miles) for most other things. The newer pair maybe feel a little more springy but there's not much in it.

  • absolutely mega run in the snow today, included a brief pitstop at my favourite cycling café too for a mid run espresso, it was supposed to be 14k at marathon pace but decided marathon effort would suffice!

such a shame the office is closed ;)

  • My roclites have done similar but are fine to wear still, not enough miles on the speedcross yet but they'll reach a similar state eventually.

  • @rhb @PhilPub thanks for the replies. I counted up my strava kms since I got the shoes and it's nearly 900km (560 miles). I was wondering about when is appropriate to get new ones as I would rather not wait until they're completely falling apart, as I'd be a bit worried I'd be fucking myself up somehow.

On the last few runs I've started to get this pain right between my shoulder blades (could be something to do with previous collarbone breaks on both sides) and I was thinking if it could be something with the cushioning on the shoes wearing down making my back ache.

I'm also wary of course of the manufacturer's bullshit saying you need a new pair more often than you actually do, but if you break the cost down over nine months of running, it's not that expensive.

  • Anyway I'll wait until after the Big Half this weekend - my first half marathon - to start thinking / looking for a new pair.

  • Good luck fella.

  • Sensible, sounds like your current pair don't owe you much.

  • Running both ways tomorrow I guess...

Forgot i'm on a 10mile tt wattbike challenge today later so back to Tram with gentle run along river path later.

  • Good luck. Hope it's on.

Another fun run in the snow today. I've got a pair of Saucony trail shoes that seem to be ideal for these conditions.
