  • Not today. Did a superman over my bars Monday eve and have sprained both wrists and elbows. Spent today waiting for X-rays instead.

Luckily legs are ok bar some minor bruising on knees.

Hoping I will be ok to get back to it next weekend. Otherwise will be gritting my way through lot more unexplored miles than I was planning on the back half of race day.

Mostly worried about setting up the campsite and taking it back down again for now though.

  • Ouch, missed that news. Heal quick. Extra bandages plus Pleading looks (and extra beers) at camping neighbours to help you setup?

    P.s. How's the bike?

  • That sucks. Hopefully a quick recovery from the aches and pains with no lingering after effects 😀

It's dawned on me the other day that September is starting to come round quickly now. Going for my first 24h race. Getting nervous

  • Relay yesterday, heat was ridiculous. I have a vest pattern burnt into my shoulders as my entire 9 mile leg was with my back to the sun. We were second overall, I was about five minutes off my pace.

  • Running anywhere his weekend has been tough.

I was in Northern Ireland for a wedding so went up Slieve Donnard yesterday. Views were spectacular and make up for the current quad pain.

  • Awww nice.

One of the silver linings of getting back to fitness after injury is that no one expects you to run around a track in Tooting in 28 degrees heat on a Saturday afternoon. ;-) The extent of my weekend running was 10 miles with a few small hills, in the shade of South London's lovely Oxleas Wood on Saturday morning. Then 72 miles on the bike yesterday, an altogether more pleasurable thing to do than running, when it's hot.

    @HatBeard - heal up fella. (( ))

  • I normally run with only a watch.

However, I'd like to start running home from work which would mean I have my phone, keys, pass and other assorted little bits.

What are my options? Small bag? Some type of bum bag?

  • i've got a small camelbak bag which would fit that in. you get a proper sweaty back though. I think it's the hydrobak.

i used to have an inov8 one which was a similar size and better, but i lost that somewhere.

  • +1 to the small hydration bag. I use a cheapo one from Mountain Warehouse. One like this: https://www.mountainwarehouse.com/track-hydro-bag---2l-p16143.aspx/black/ but mine was from a few years ago and came with a 1L bladder in it (you have to buy them separately now). Most of the time I use it without the bladder in, that only gets used for extended/HM summer commutes.

I sweat like a pig anyway, so a bag like this doesn't make much difference. Everything inside gets put inside a ziploc bag (clothing from dhb is a good source of these) otherwise it would be soaked through.

Had considered a bum bag or waist bag but I'd be forced to punch myself in the face repeatedly if I ever got one of those.

  • Have you made a very similar post to this including the link before?

Either that or I am having a very specific and strange deja vu...

  • Yes, although the admission that I considered a bum/waist bag is new...

  • To Hell with fashion! For that small amount of kit I'd definitely consider a Pete Bland bumbag. I bought one to carry the obligatory gear required for a fell race (map, compass, waterproof, snack). It's dead comfy and the compression straps mean it's very snug and doesn't bounce around.

  • I have something like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/d/Running/FREETOO-Update-Bumbag-Running-Runners/B01GPL8GS0 which seems to work OK. Just about big enough for phone, wallet and keys and a bit of spare change.

  • I use a spibelt, good enough for phone, keys, pass, etc. I don't notice it all once I'm moving

    http://www.wiggle.co.uk/spibelt-basic/?lang=en&curr=GBP&dest=1&sku=5360451226&kpid=5360451226&utm_source=google&utm_term&utm_campaign=UK_PLA_Clothing&utm_medium=base&utm_content=mkwid%7CskuVQax7G_dm%7Cpcrid%7C67090791782%7Cpkw%7C%7Cpmt%7C%7Cprd%7C5360451226uk

Also, I handed my work phone back and went byod to get down to one phone, started using Apple Pay so I didn't need to carry cards or cash, unpicked all extra threading from my undies to keep weight down, etc. Almost.

  • now i've used a salomon s-lab vest i doubt i'd use anything else. easily the most comfortable and least noticeable option for carrying anything small (not laptops/full change of clothes or anything)

  • Is it common to get shin splints/something similar from worn out shoes, or is it marketing to get you the replace shoes quicker?

I've not upped mileage but seem to have picked some calf pain up. Had my shoes about 9 months

  • you can normally tell when your shoes are worn out, if the cushioning isn't doing its job or if you can see wear on the sole tread that is bad enough to affect how you land then it's probably time to change them but i have shoes that have a few hundred miles on them and are still good as new and some that went bad much quicket..

  • To Hell with fashion!

    So much this.

@jackc I'd written but not clicked post on this earlier, which covers most options as posted by folks...

3l bumbag may do, check pete bland website for good selection.

If bigger look at small rucksack (camelbak, omm) or vest (inov8, salamon)

other brands are available etc etc

  • Depending how you land, the type of cushioning in the sole and the terrain you run on, you can have a huge difference in the usable distance.

    1. Remove the insole and feel for notable compressed areas of the footbed at the heel and under the ball of your foot.
    2. Is the insole flattened to a wafer.
    3. Visual horizontal creases around the outside of the sole unit showing compression of the foam.
    4. Uneven wear to the tread, with heavy wear in places.
    5. All the tread substantially worn

I've just destroyed my second pair of Torin shoes. Very comfy but they have only survived 150km for the first pair which were replaced under warranty and this pair were shot at 250km and are heading for the bin at 300km... With me landing with a mid/fore foot strike and them having soft forefoot cushioning, it's now very squished and I've worn through the tread under the ball of my big toe. The rest of the tread is almost brand new and the uppers look perfect but they left my feet and legs aching really badly after last nights efforts.
I know someone with 600km on the same shoes.

  • Thanks!
Just bought a new pair (of the same shoes) so will compare!

  • Have entered the local 5k series for some speedy sessions over the next 6 weeks to help mix things up a bit. Winner usually clocks sub 15. Will do v.well to make the top 20 in mv40. Ouch.

  • That's a wee bit competitive then 😲

  • it's the Orion Fell race tonight! £3 entry and a free bottle of beer at the end

  • ^ sounds great value, was it fun?

In other news Pavel aiming for FKT on the Pennine Way. Dot watch with the racers, who set off a couple hours later.
