  • In some pretty rubbish news our club's top runner has suffered very serious injuries in a triathlon crash this weekend. http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/triathlon/40156720

I'm heading to blustery Battersea tonight to try and start the process of finding some 5K legs.

  • Sounds nasty, hope he recovers ok.

  • I used to run a lot more but have been focusing on strength training a lot more

The downside is where I could run 10 miles easily I can now run 5 and it's torture

  • i'm in the ladywell 10000. look for the blue & white hoops of eton manor ac.

i'll be starting off steady, getting slower, then finishing with a phooot rather than a bang

  • I saw a video of the crash. Pretty nasty, with an inexcusably unprotected concrete bollard as the offending article. Have also seen pics of Alex in his hospital bed today, joking about getting on the turbo tomorrow, so at least he's in good spirits, but he won't be taking part in either the Diamond League or Junior Euro champs he had lined up. :(

@doubleodavey - I'm in for the Ladywell 10,000. Should be enough time to get fit again, and I've also volunteered for pace-making in one of the earlier races. It's our club's 3,000m this Thursday (@juanito?), which I definitely won't be fit for, but I'm pacing the "C" race for a bit of practice.

  • Great news. See you there!

That's good to hear about Alex @philpub. I'm unlikely to be in the 3000 this Thursday, it's a bit too far for a school night :(

  • The running will get easier, the strength gains should help long term also. Enjoy!

  • Results for EfM are out, was 19/90.

4 got 90 crow flies miles
28 more got 60 crow flies miles
48 more got 30 crow flies miles

Charlie has made a video about his experience:

    (tldw: avoid a-roads)

  • he's in good spirits

    Good to hear!

  • was 19/90

    Some #rep deserved here!

  • Cheers. I didn't mention 19th-32nd were separated by <1km. A popular end point as it marked the 60mile goal.

  • @rhb top work!

Q for the panel, has anyone tried Terraclaw 220s?

    https://www.sportsshoes.com/product/ino812/inov8-terraclaw-220-trail-running-shoes-~-ss16/#description

They appeal because I'm constantly having lacing bruising issues. Have tried multiple lacing varieties but figured these may be an interesting way of solving. I'm normally tight in a 10 in inov8s so I'm wondering whether I can get away with an 11 too.

  • Global Running Day!

    Yesterday.

    Oops.

Thought it was later this month when I was planning on extending my commute up to HM distance again. Oh well.

~10k lunchtime loop over Chelsea Bridge again for me today.

  • Bruising to left foot finally easing. Might do jr parkrun Sunday with daughter if it's sunny.

^ these arrived today and are actually much nicer in the flesh if anyone was considering them

  • They look pretty good, plenty of grip, sole looks like it would release pretty well.

The look can't be that important they'll be covered in mud 99% of the time

  • Third time running up Mt Kaukau, given up looking for a sensible route up, it's either steep and slippy or steep and steppy! Got to remember to come down the steps as shoes are pretty stiff and slick, nearly binned it on a few damp grassy bits on top. Great views from the ridge today, might hike up and take the camera one day. Too lazy to track distance or speed, just trying to run on feel and hopefully regain a bit of endurance soon.

  • Covered a marathon distance on my training walk yesterday. managed to do my 4x6mi laps (plus to/from station) within 8 hours which bodes well for being able to bank some time on the course as am allowing 2 hours per 6mi lap in my 24hr race (with a view to hitting 10/11 laps) excluding any stops and there was a good hour of stopped time at least in there.

as the distance creeps up my toes have held up with my taping regiment but getting hotspot/blisters on the ball of my foot below big toe from the downhill sections, I taped it and it was still obvious but didn't develop into anything major. also started getting a bit of blistering on outside of both heels so need to expand to that as well. come race day I think I will just be taping 80% of my feet to be sure. I think the kit/sock changes every 12 miles and shoe change every 18/24 will also help. My legs seem to be bouncing back quickly too. am sore today but only like 'i ran a decent paced half' level of discomfort.

Weight has plateau'd a little bit the last week (slooooowly coming down but not by much) but bodyfat is dropping so think maybe all this walking is building my leg muscle back up hence the lack of change in numbers.

now under 5 weeks to go and my camping checklist is bordering on the ridiculous. trying to find ways to have everything to hand for when i step off the course so buying all kinds of non-essential shit like a thermos to keep my coffee in to save having to boil a kettle every time. I also bought one of those passive cooler boxes that keep ice for 2 days, so I will be finishing the race to a 4 pack of ice cold beer at the very least.

and final thing in my weekly brain dump, if you've not seen the GU energy stroopwafel's ( http://www.ultramarathonrunningstore.com/GU-SALTED-CHOCOLATE-STROOPWAFEL-Energy-Waffles-p/guwafflesaltedch.htm ) they're pretty good but surprisingly the coffee caramel which i was expecting to be the nicest is pretty bland. salted chocolate or salty's caramel are nicer but lack added caffeine.

  • I've managed to put a hole in the left toe of my new Saucony Guide shoes after just one marathon. I don't have Hobbit feet, much manicure, OCD.
    Not happy.

  • A few people I know spent the weekend running 22 laps up Pendle Hill (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pendle_Hill) for charity for the victims of the Manchester bombing. 83 miles and over 23,000 feet of climbing over the course of the weekend.

    http://www.burnleyexpress.net/news/runners-climb-in-memory-of-the-bombing-victims-1-8580892

  • @aggi great effort, that is a lot of climbing.

@andy_k there is a lot to be said for not worrying about time/distance for a while and enjoying being out and feeling like you are running fast without constantly checking your watch.

I did the Sri Chinmoy 5k in Battersea Park last night. Tried to do it without looking at my watch too much and just racing the people around me. Think I managed to run 16:38, which is faster than last week but still a way off my sub 16 target for the summer. I'm going to have to up the training a bit from 30 miles a week and one session to hit that.

    Enjoy your Tuesday.

  • I don't feel like I'm running fast, but I'm not really bothered about that either, it's just good to be outside!

Went up a 4th time yesterday, mildly hungover but a somewhat more consistent pace made things feel a little easier. Still just as sweaty by the time I hit the top. Clearer this time, caught a glimpse of the snow covered peaks on the south island and some stunning views along the ridge, hopefully before we catch the ferry south I'm up to running the length of it and back.

  • ^ looks awesome.

^^ 16.38 still rapid, hope you can trim it down further.

Second week on bus. Hacking cough / headcold. First time in ages an event has left me completely in tatters. Sundays Jr Parkrun was cancelled due to other park event but that's probably for best considering!

  • Well done, beats my Battersea Park SB of 16:56! I guess sub-16 will be another one of my targets again this year, and it's coming back, but I'm staying relaxed about running times whilst still mixing it up with the cycling.

@andy_k - I don't think I'd give two hoots about pace running round there. Stunning!

I celebrated my new V45 status on Sunday with a low-key 10k, the Two Castles Run (Warwick Castle to Kenilworth Castle, nice.) 2nd V45 and 14th overall (/3,400-odd), a good three minutes down on pb but it was a bit hilly, and more importantly it really does now feel like the achilles injury is behind me. I felt confident enough about this last week to enter the North Downs Run (30k) in a couple of weeks, which I'm just gonna treat as a very scenic, hard training run.

  • Thinking of you @hatbeard if you're doing another 6hrs in this heat! #factor50time

Back out there today 8miles total middle 3 a new for me Parkrun, 18.59 nice enough given 6 months of slow stuff. That time will seed me for the club 'chase the ace' handicap 5km at end of month.
