  • I just entered on the assumption that the new balot format virtually guarantees failure.

Nothing to lose, and if I decide to try and qualify for utmb/Mds then I'll be doing plenty of running anyway.

  • that was freaking unlucky - although at the time I think you might have had a good shout at swinging it - it's obviously out of date now though...

I'm definitely keen for a sub 3 attempt, and I'd love to do it in London, but in reality as i don't think I'll get in. I think I'll probably have a crack at Berlin 2016..

@HatBeard I don't think the London organisers do themselves any favours by not requiring proof of running ability for the faster pens, and not making it easy to move backwards at registration... the fact it takes some people 30 minutes to cross the start line and people understandably want to get going asap is understandable as well even though they know it doesn't affect their time..

  • I called them that day... Apparently, regardless of how close, it's a set number. Also it's quite a lenient time comparative to elsewhere, think NY is sub 3...

  • wow - harsh - pretty sure boston is 3.05 as well, new york times look like they are qualifying times which are actually vs the championship entries for London which are 2:45 so I dont think thats comparable...

I just had an awesome run session on fairly tired legs, and beat my own CR by 25 seconds (admittedly on a segment i created - that only 4 other people have ever run)

maybe this training is paying off!

  • Done another rib playing 5-a-side. The original incident was last week but I was getting away with subsequent exercise (two runs, another hour of 5-a-side and a 4.8k swim) but 2 hours of 5-a-side tonight and I can barely move my arm above my head, at least not without pain. Soft tissue injury most likely, not a bruised or cracked rib.

Hoping 400mg of Vitamin I and a reasonable night of sleep (already put MiniGB back to bed once tonight) will fix it, otherwise it'll probably be two weeks of enforced rest. Boring.

  • Not trolling ed but what makes you think you could go sub 3? I ran 3.05 in london and think below 3 would require serious improvement (for me and I'm a decent runner) . It would be a big jump from your previous times unless I've missed something.

  • Few things, vdot predictor based off 5k and 10k times that i have run, the fact that I was the pace maker for Kingston breakfasr run (16 miles at 7 min miles), and that 3:16 was done off tri training which incorporated 5 runs over 10 miles and two runs a week.

So with more miles in my legs I'd have to take my 16 mile pace which was pretty comfortable, take 8 seconds off per mile and add on 10 miles, which doesn't feel like that much of a stretch...

I'm not saying its a certainty but I also wouldn't have said a 3:16 was possible 10 years ago when I weighed 16 stone, and my idea of a workout was walking via the kebab van on the way home after a night out...

Also, if not trolling why have no name on here ;)

  • Someone opened a door into my elbow on the way home. Doored whilst running. Fucking hurts.
    Bastards.

  • That vdot is all well and good but based on my 5k and half times I should have turned out a sub 2:35 half. I was a fair way off. Those final 6 miles are tough. In training I managed to do 5 steady plus 13 at marathon pace (a bit faster than) and still holding target pace beyond mile 21 became tough.

    Good luck.

  • I'm not sure I'd want to wholly trust a marathon prediction off a 10k.

  • Not trolling mate promise. Big respect and hope you succeed

Just know from experience sub 3 is difficult to extrapolate from shorter distances and is a big jump from where you are. 8 seconds off per mile plus ten miles is a huge difference

  • Decided I need targets. So a load of half marathons entered, and the ballot for london next year. And lets see how the knees do....

  • Ed - If I was to train for sub 3 again i'd ignore 6.52 pace and work being ready for a faster schedule, say 2.57 for arguments sake which would be 6.45 pace.

If 6.52 is target it's bang on 3h which leaves no wriggle room, which increases chances of being outside 3h if things drift only a little bit on race day.

  • And, in grand anticipation of races to be run I managed.... 2 1/2 miles. This could be a long process.

  • Dun my first run in about 5 months today, a very slow 3 miles. Quite enjoyed it actually. Am going to limit my running to sub 5-mile efforts to support cycling, mostly because i pick up injuries quite easily.

Looking forward to getting in to it again though, like the simplicity of throwing on some kit and going out for half hour or so, unlike the bike which involves a fair bit o faff

  • 4:12 pace for 3 hours (I seem to only work in Km/m these days).

    That sounds tough.

  • Went along to run yha tonight despite being on Dr's orders to not run. Passed Billy Bland in a corridor and we exchanged hello nods = highlight.

After the headtorch runners went out on the guided runs the organisers were showing a couple of films so I stayed for the first, Finding Traction, about Nikki Kimball's attempt to set a 270mile Ultra Record. Was good and a nice alternative to the run I missed out on.

Going to look into if we can go as a family for the whole weekend next year if it means we can both run different sessions whilst swapping childcare.

  • Ran the Hackney half yesterday. It was a bit hotter than expected, but a great run. Really well organised at the start/finish. Lots of crowd support and steel drum bands along the route. Massive pub lunch and pints in the sun afterwards. Would definitely run again, just give me a few weeks.

  • Also did Hackney half and all was going well till after mile 10 when the heat was really getting to me.

Seeing people getting oxygen and being pushed in wheelchairs to St Johns stations in the last km makes me think my two little walks was the sensible approach.

DJ at the finish was much better than the appalling gospel choir.

  • I didn't run in the end as my chest still hasn't cleared up but I was cheering at the entrance to olympic park with the run dem lot just past mile 10. I was in a bright red chicago bulls jersey and cycle cap.

Was a good day. am totally sunburnt now though. mostly down one side as i was stood in one spot facing the same direction for about 2.5 hours.

i may be wrong but i think the post-run DJ was one of our lot too based on what someone mentioned to me at the pub after. if so he's good, his set at the berlin half after party the other month was brilliant.

  • First proper run in 9 days due to rib injury from 5-a-side. 10k on my usual Monday route at 5:32/km but it felt harder than it should have been. Feeling the warmer weather and plenty of bugs in the air round the back of Wimbledon Common. Amazing how quick the greenness comes out once spring has sprung, so much of that route has changed in just 2 weeks.

Running 12km home from work Tuesday and then extended run of 18km into work Thursday. Plus 3 hours of 5-a-side in the next 4 days. Looking forward to a (relative) rest of Friday (just a swim and cycle). HM run into work next week looms like a great big looming thing.

New cheapo dhb running shorts worked a treat. Nice and supportive with no chafe.

  • Is running event DJ a specialist career now? 'Yeah, I'm a DJ, no big deal, here's a flyer for one of my races'...

  • @Greenbank - Which shorts?

  • Far too long, KL will be along shortly to castigate you
