I've explained to people why cricket is not that "poncey game for englanders", what happened to Phil Hughes was an almost certainty. Had some fortune shined on him and all he received was a bang on the side of the helmet the ball/bowler would have been lauded.

It's just awfully sad news, haven't been able to get my head straight today. Worth remembering some of the things he achieved:
youngest player to score a century in a final of the Sheffield Shield
youngest man to score a century in each innings of a Test
unbeaten 81 in a record 163 for the last wicket with Ashton Agar
first Australian to score a century on his one-day debut
top score of 243 not out for Australia A versus South Africa A
got to his first Test 100 with two sixes
made 1000 runs when aged 11

RIP. echo Hairnetnic. Aside from boxing I can't imagine many sports have commentators saying things like "he needs to bowl shorter and start pitching balls [hard, 90 mph] up at the batsman's throat". Add to that suicidal fielding positions and serious injury and worse is inevtable from time to timee, like it is doing most things.

wut? you can't imagine any sports that use (possibly dangerous) intimidation tactics?
nonsense. -
• #3659
Plenty of sports have intimidation tactics, but few have the weapons to readily kill someone in a method legal in the sport.
Rugby? maybe fists, but you're not "allowed" to.
Golf? nope.
Ultimate fighting? probably.
Tennis? maybe a deliberate smash into someone at the net? pretty rare.
Football? plenty of broken legs and the odd cheekbone but mostly outside the laws of the game.
Darts?
American football? Plenty of armour in that game.
Baseball? nope.
Ice hockey? Kind of, but still just fists.Cricket is up there where it is a legitimate tactic to attempt to intimidate under the threat of what happened to Hughes. Hard to say it was unforseen though the stats suggest it was actually quite unlikely.
This is why I talk cricket up as a tough person's sport.

Fast short pitch bowling is part of cricket, , this tragic incident and will shake up cricket and i hope they look at protection rather than eliminating the bouncer. I know i love to see a battle between a fast bowler on his form and a great batsman who is prepared to take on the short pitched ball.
such a sad loss.

Is it me or is it a bit patronising for every name in cricket to be telling Sean Abbott how he should be feeling and that 'he won't sleep properly for a long time'?

Well 5 mins ago it had a little doodle of a bat leaning against a wall.

I hope cricket takes a proper thorough look at the pros and cons of extra protection. A panicked knee-jerk over-cautious response to a freak accident is not what is required right now.

It is. It's as if they'd be really angry if they found out he was really upset abut the death of a fellow player, but didn't feel any personal guilt.

So, the World Cup is here. We're going to get fucking slaughtered tonight/this morning by the Aussies, but it'll be fun.

Parents whatsapped me at 3AM to remind me about Ind v Pak game ..
I think India should've made 20 more runs given how fucking weak the bowling is

Aus, NZ, SA and India in semis.
England look awful, that was embarassing. Zimbabwe, surprisingly, had some handy looking players. Go Ireland! -
• #3674
Oh England. Bwahahahahahahahahahahahhaa.
That was insane. The most comprehensive pasting I've ever seen. -
• #3675
Eoin Morgan must be sick as a pig - really backed a loser choosing England over Ireland. Poor Boyd Rankin too - didn't even get to the WC.
Can't believe it, really. Must be horrible for the other players too, as well as his family. An actual tragedy. RIP
