  • Early Metallica, Megadeth, Slayer, Pestilence. Great gym music too!

I was born in the 80s and my parents listened generally to Procol Harum (which I also like) and lots of MOR stuff. Where the metal comes from...dunno.

&v=ioC2QIYIHXk these Dutch guys keep the Dutch /m\ flag flying :)

  • Bit late on this I reckon but I just heard Light Bearer yesterday. Absolutely top stuff.

  • ^ Yeah it's great :)

In other news there was a "best of metal" CD playing in the gym where I train.

Usual great choices, Megadeth, Metallica, the classic. Then on CD2...the last song: Nickelback.

Eh. More aluminium than metal IMHO.

  • Yeah the boyfriend pointed that out yesterday. Varg means wolf in Swedish...and commented that kind of nickname was probably cool 20 years ago. Burn.

So he had a cool nickname when it was cool, then didn't get rid of it when the trend changed... More a compliment than a burn, really (and it's not like it's difficult to find something insulting about the guy). Did anything come of his recent arrest?

  • BRM firmly believes that Master of Puppets is the greatest metal album of all time.
Whilst I don't disagree that it's a great album I can't make it stick as the greatest.
In my attempt to prove him wrong I've just listened to the following:

Pantera - Vulgar Display of Power
Judas Priest - Post of Entry
    Metallica - Master of Puppets
Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Iron Maiden - Number of the Beast
    Dio - Holy Diver
    Megadeath - Rust in Peace
    Megadeath - Peace Sells.
    Guns and Roses - Appetite
    Zeppelin - 4

Despite not having a retort, I am now bouncing off the walls.
    BRM, thanks for the excuse.

  • Ooh. Master of Puppets is exceedingly good. Not above Lateralus though on my list.

Are we considering Live albums as part of this argument? Or is that too close to a "greatest hits?"

  • There was no way I'd ever have convinced BRM that Tool was better than any of the albums listed above.

We didn't bring live albums into the mix but "Greatest of all time" would suggest that they're fair game, though greatest hits is definitely cheating.

Rust in Peace is an album I hadn't listened to for a long time, it's going to feature heavily in rotation for a while though. I've also just realised that I didn't include any Slayer in that list, Hillbilly would be disappointed with me.

  • I was thinking whether Live after Death would be cheating - choosing that as your Maiden album over Number of the Beast or Powerslave is almost picking and choosing tracks between the two with that approach.

Looking forward to the new Red Fang LP...

  • NO WAY is a tool album better than Master of Puppets. I really like Tool, but c'mon...

Unrelated to the 'top albums' chat, I listened to some tracks off New American Gospel by Lamb of God today (their debut). SO good. Wish they made stuff like that still. The new stuff is shocking.

Also, new Cult of Luna album being released in about 4 weeks, I only just realised.

  • I've also just realised that I didn't include any Slayer in that list, Hillbilly would be disappointed with me.

    Do'h

For me one of the greatest albums of all time...

Looking forward to the new Red Fang LP...

I was greatly dissappointed with the first single.

  • Ufomammut sounds interesting actually...#starts scouring youtube

  • BTW Therapy - Troublegum. Maybe a touch more punk but it's pretty darn awesome in my opinion.

  • yes I'm heading to that..

Do we tangentially know each other through BRM or TS ? Have we met before?

    It's quite possible

  • I've recently discovered Astrohenge. Quite like it.

  • Can we get BRM out of his self enforced hermitdom to head along to Ufomammut?
