O'Shane, what size wheels & tyres have you designed that around?
26", 1.9" rear 1.5" front. At first I didn't think it would make any difference but I like it this way. The rims are suited for each tyre too. I might go smaller again on the front.
Also, I'm used to longer stems. I prefer something 80-120

why is picking cranks such a massive ball ache?? I just want something that fits my bike (135mm rear spacing, 68mm bb shell), isn't too heavy and preferably isn't too expensive.

What length?? Bb type??
Onza do a square taper 165mm with 24 ring and bash guard for about 40 quid.
Failing that look mtb raceface do cranks in every length and can usually get cheap 2nd hand ones on somewhere like single track world forum for not a lot of money.

Probably 170mm length. I've got no idea of the advantages of the different bb systems. The easier, the better.

I'll try those options out though, thanks mate.

External BB is stiffer but you don't have quite as much adjustablility in the chainline.
Shimano Deore is cheap and strong.

+1 for external bb instead of square taper.
I used to have square taper and fucked up soo many sets of cranks.
Now have an external bb Shimano deore, not had a problem with them for months.
Probably cost a bit more, but worth it.

Don't listen to Louis. He'll break anything. I've never fucked up a set of cranks because of square taper. He's a power horse.
That being said, external is better.

But get the frame faced.
-
• #9136
Yup, that's one of the hassles with external BBs.
-
• #9137
Not that much of a hassle though really.

This is true.

You only need the frame faced if it's old right? Most new threads are good enough aren't they?
-
• #9140
Many are faced before they leave the factory. Some shops face every frame that comes through their hands. You never know.

Means bringing the bike to a shop with the tools and giving them money. Pretty annoying, imo.

External bb is by far superior to square taper cranks. Stiffer and stronger. If your not a heavy rider then Isis or square taper are ok cheap square taper if not tightened do round pretty easily.
If its a newer frame facing shouldn't be to much of an issue

My mechanic faces everytime he installs an external BB on a bike that's new to the shop, even if the frame is brand new.

I thought that quite a few frames are not faced at the factory. So the shop mechanic has to do it.

Paint gets in the way too.

Hi NKT,
make sure you've done your sums on the toe overlap right. Roughly 530mm front-centre seems very short.
