This is question for all you 26ers out there. What gear ratio do you use? Chain ring and sproket size? I am looking into hub and crank options and it looks like gear inches for 700 are totally different to 26
EDIT:
UTFS and found the polo gear thread, as you were. Soz -

Use gain ratio instead, problem solved.

UUpdated Stonebreaker.
Gone on Trial parts:
26" TryAll fork with tektro draco hydro brakes 150mm disc
TryAll 175 crankset with 18t freewheel on it, 12t fixed back cog
Never had disc before this... I couldn't go back now, it's much more sensitive, feels more reliable and fucking stops you. Braking feels also less tiring.
Bash gard made in 20minutes out of an old metal piece (Have yours on order!).

Awesome Alex. Good job!
Oh and sweet rotor guard. -

Use gain ratio instead, problem confounded.
Gear inches properly calculated accounts for rim and Tyre size.
Gain is only relevant if you're changing the crank length at the same time.

I stand corrected, as you were.

Who makes the best v brakes. My choices are:
trp m920 - light, mid price
xtr - second hand
xt - new
avid single digit 7 - newand brake pads, i'm thinking these at £5 or is it worth buying kool stops or something else?
-
• #8767
Object recommended the Avid d7 over the XT/R.
-
• #8768
I'm still selling some Avid 7s, if you want them Cam.
-
• #8769
I'm using avids with kool stop mixed compound pads as of last week. Braking is 10x better and worth the extra £££

Avid ultimates? Ball bearing pivots etc. Dave and Prav runs em, might wanna speak to them?
-
• #8771
All kinds of medium and high quality v-brakes are going to stop you the same (or similar), the diference comes in the time they last, and regulation they have.
Go for Kool Stop. -

what about in the wet? are there any good v's that work that well in heavy rain? or are discs the only real option for playing in storms?
-
• #8773
Swiss Stop pads are noticeably better in the wet than dual compound 'normal' pads, but they're £25 for four inserts... Seem to be lasting quite well though.

Who makes the best v brakes?
Cam, XTRs are just a lighter (weaker) version of XTs so I'd avoid them unless you want a weight weenie polo bike. Avid's range is near identical to Shimano's offering (similar technology at different price points), so again I'd go for something decent before the arms become lightweight/flimsy.
That said I've broken 6+ pairs of Avid and Shimano v-brakes over the last year or so, the pin either snaps (leaving no spring tension) or the bottom rivet assembly comes apart.
I've just bought some mini-v TRPs as they are meant to be robust with loads of stopping power, we'll see if they last.
Paul's v-brakes seem to be a bit of a faff to setup/maintain but are meant to be the business once running (and are super light).
The best value brake pad is the Gooey range, they're well respected and don't come with such a premium price as Kool stops (although Kool stop multi-compound pads are better in the wet than gooey):
